WoW!

Okay so I finally decided to do the WoW thing. I got it today and needless to say I am totally lost. Just a few questions to anyone that is playing it.

How do I chat? Haha. Are people ignoring me when I type or is there something special I have to do.

Under VIDEO OPTIONS what can I tweak to make the game look better and stuff. Sorta like shiny and stuff...what can I turn on or what should I turn off?

Oh yeah and how do I get my own name to show up when I take a screen capture?

Do I have to start all over again? I am in WoW right now. If I switch to Windrunner how do I find you? What should I be? Right now I am a Alliance - Human - Palladin - LVL8.

Is it your first MMORPG? The first one is always the hardest to figure out... once you know one system it becomes easier for the next ones.

You should have fun with it. I liked it a lot for a while, it helps to have good people to do stuff with... just make sure they aren't all level 60, you won't be grouping very much if so

I am up to LVL 11 now and figured out a few more things but still am lost on a lot of stuff. I think I set all the graphic options to high and so far haven't noticed any difference. My little green latency bar is green and under 100. Having fun...

I will help out too if you would like - I don't think I have a character on that server but I might as wll add another one to the 8,000 I already have

I think I finsihed all the quests that were available to me so far in the Elwynn Forrest place. So now I moved over to Westfall and am getting my butt kicked.

Yeah Tueday is maintenance day for WoW - it is down until mid afternoon EST - I forget exactly what time it comes up. I am not sure if the next big patch is today or not - there is a new content patch around the corner. WoW is very aggressive about updating. One question for you - was the WoW trial you are doing downloadable?

BTW Westfall is much harder than Elwynn Forest - it is when things really begin - you will spend a long time there, including dealing with your first big dungeon, the Dead Mines. You seem to be levelling pretty fast at least, though it is not hard to get up to 10 or higher in a day.

WoW is like most online games - it is sharded, meaning it has different servers to handle the load of players. Each server is unique - there is no communication between them. Additionally, every server has two factions - Alliance and Horde - you can't communicate between sides either. You can search for someone and add them to your buddy list if you know their character name - but it's not like SL in that regard at all.

I think I will put the character database back up on SLuniverse for WoW so that people can find each other - I had one up for awhile when it first came out, and now that a surge of new people are trying it, it will probably be useful to have.

And yes I downloaded the 10 day trial off the internet and everything is working fine.

doooit! i got duped into joining a guild that turned out to be some lesbian s&m group. hmmm, sounds just like sl. somehow they "forgot" to mention that part when they asked me to join. pffft. it would be fun to find the sl people on there.

Ohhh you're on one of the RP realms. What's it like over there? Everyone always in character?

I havent been asked to join a Guild yet but I did group with some kids and his mom for a little while. We beat the Hogger? which I guess was a good thing.

i haven't been to a regular realm, but i don't think there's much of a difference. everyone talks normally in the general chat. same drama/arguing, same questions about where to find something, etc. some people take it VERY seriously, and some could care less.

The RP realms really are not * that * much different, though you find that more serious players may drift toward them ultimately. Some people do play in character. I have a horde character on one of the RPPVP servers, and the people playing Taurens often are in character. I do find it adds to the effect, but then it is ruined by some 12 year old babbling about Vin Diesel.

My mains are on Feathermoon - Tauren Druid level 54 and Night Elf Hunter level 50.

While we are here, what profession do I have to get or should I get or do I even have to get one? I havent figured that part out yet.

Also as a Alliance - Human Palladin, should I even worry about try to get magic stuff?

I'm on Kirin Tor server, as "Athnagoram" (Alliance). It's supposed to be role-playing there, ie only "in character" discussion on chat. It just seems to mean eberyone talks endlessly out of character on "General". Can I mute channels I don't want ?

It's almost worth signing up for the free trial just to experience the dwarves' huge undergound city of Ironforge, with its gigantic central forge with dozens of players working frenziedly at the fires (presumably making armor ?).

It's the people riding huge snow-leopards or tigers which fascinate me.
I can't suss out whether these are grown, tamed wild-animal pets you can ride on, or mounts which are purchased like armor.

If the former, I guess a hunter is the character to develop, they seem to have lots of extra skills, ie taming..

Is there any recommendation as to how an SLer who is not to keen on fighting can survive? Presumably you can't make or trade much without endless repetitive slog ?

How can I best survive just to explore? A sort of safe subsistence living for a while ?

What criteria should I use in choosing my final server ?

How can anyone afford "thousands" of characters? Isn't it ten per subscription, and all on the same server ?

What are the pros/cons of night-elf-hunter versus dwarf-hunter? The night elves don't seem to have much of a city that I can find.

Ah well it was exactly this post that made me aware there was even a 10-day trial you could download off the net. I had always assumed you had to get the game in the store. I Google'd the term and found the link to sign up. So thanks Ellie for posting that and turning me onto WoW!

Mounts are purchased when you get to level 40. They cost 72 gold (assuming you have Honored reputation by then) and to learn the riding skill costs 18 gold. Many people spend all their level 30-40 time saving up the money. When you get to level 60, you can buy faster mounts with barding.



Professions are the way to make money outside of questing and grinding (killing). Obviously skinning isn't a good choice for a peaceful life, but herbalism and mining can be good. Or once you build up a decent bank balance, you can just buy the raw materials at the Auction House and sell the result, as an Alchemist/Blacksmith/Tailor/Leatherworker



The roleplaying servers tend to have the lowest percentage of illiterate screaming kids.



I think Cristiano was kidding - AFAIK it's a max of 50, with 10 per server.
