Does your SL enthusiasm go in cycles ?

I have a confession to make. I am halfway through downloading the 10-day free trial version of WoW. Don't know if it will work. Don't know if I'll like it.

What I have observed is that during my year in SL my enthusiasm has gone in cycles. Odd thing is, there seem to be three separate cycles, out of synchrony.

1 Enthusiasm for in-world socializing, home owning and residential architecture for self
2 Enthusiasm for creative scripting and product development and sale.
3 Enthusiasm for forum involvement.

These cycles seem to have inconsistent and out of synchrony periodicity of between 3 and 5 months.

At the moment all three seem to be temporarily declining to a low. Hence the WoW download.

Anybody else found anything similar ?

Absolutely! One of the ways I keep from losing my mind when SL gets frustrating is by playing another game. Currently MXO. Switching back and forth really is a good break and puts things in perspective. I call it slaughter therapy.

I haven't played WOW, but a lot of people really love it. Enjoy, come back soon.

I rather doubt a combat game can suck me in. I really just want to wander round and have a look at its graphics and atmosphere. Still, you never know......

Hm. Needs "Enthusiasm for patch behavior."

That certainly complies with my own cycle of interest.

Hmmm...
Well it took in all ten hours to download and install the WoW free trial, including the update of the update of the update of the update.

Visually it is stunning. I think not understanding what is happening may actually be best. I stood aghast and almost overwhelmed at the centre of The Dwarves' huge forge, for instance, busy people running everywhere on heaven knows what seemingly esoteric business.

What a terrible pity that the only obvious thing to do is to continually engage in stylized and (for me) uninteresting fighting. I think I'll just carry on exploring instead.

Oh, and the manual seems pretty bad.

Now if SL can survive until it has this visual quality, and this ability to manage crowds - then what a thing it will be ! The technology will get there, but will SL ? Lets truly hope so.

i go through those cycles too, and have been at a low myself. and i just started WoW on saturday. i love it, but i'm an RPGer. so far there doesn't seem to be too much social interaction, but it seems to increase as you get further along in the game.

OOh, it goes in cycles? My enthusiasm for SL peaked early on and has been steadily declining ever since. :( Maybe one day it will go up.

I agree, my enthusiasm goes in cycles too. atm, I am pretty uninspired and kinda in a funk inworld and here on these forums. Got tired of butting heads in these forums so left for a while... got bored inworld and don't log in as much as I used to. I logged in the other day and logged back out when I realized there was absolutely nothing I wanted to do. :(

I hope the enthusiasm comes back. There was a time when I really loved SL. It was so exciting, so fun. Now it mostly brings up hurt feelings and sadness... hopefully that will change.

I agree - I am totally off SL at the moment but hope will get my enthusiasm back.

In the meantime, I am playing Eve online. Love it so far and you might want to try it Ellie. No hack and slash, the occasional killing of a pirate ship is about it.

I have tried Eve and am pretty much bored to death by it. Maybe you can enlighten me.

All I seem to do is take large amounts of time flying between missions... by myself might I add, it is a loner game big time... I do this while watching tv or would be so bored I'd fall asleep. I turn the sound off now because the constant warping sound is currently driving me nuts.

What else is there to do and what's so fun about it? lafs

I definitely go in cycles. I've been really unmotivated towards SL for the past few months and am now starting to get motivated again. I don't worry about it too much. I love SL too much to risk burning myself out so when I don't feel like being here I don't log in and I don't question it too much. I've never lasted in any MMO longer than six months. I'm over two years in SL and counting. I hope to make it to ten at least. The only way that's going to happen is for me to take extended breaks when I feel like I need them. Right now someone really needs to come to my house and take my copy of Civ4 away!
