Yes, it's quite ironic. He was just swimming alongside it.

How terribly sad for his wife and kids.

Some of you in this thread are heartless people that have no heart or compassion for anyone at any time.

Wrong.

It's just that not everyone has compassion for everyone all the time.

Show her this ...

http://youtube.com/watch?v=HuLEka1L3SY

We always had a bit of a hard time with Irwins shows. As parents who think Irwin's style was totally intrusive and irresponsible, yet somehow appealling because he was obviously such a real expert and obviously did care tremendously. Discussing his irresponsibility with our daughter payed off it seems. She really did like Steve but she took the news with little surprise, maybe more than she's letting on to us, she's 10 now but fairly pragmatic about these things.

Yet it doesn't stop me doing this I just couldn't resist it considering a certain response earlier .....

compassion, a little yes, but not too much, he died doing what he loved doing which can't be bad.

LOL! Yeah, I pretty much feel the same way. It's like that guy and his girlfriend who tried living with bears and, not surprisingly, got mauled to death a while back. These people talk themselves in to a sense of invincibility and then inevitably find out one day that they're just as mortal as everyone else. I feel bad for his family, definitely, but he was an accident going somewhere to happen.

Yah that Grizzly Man guy was whacked. Sure I feel bad for their families and friends, but maybe some of these people should have their heads checked once in awhile.

Just been discussing this with our daughter. She's being far more pragmatic than I would've thought, she's 10 now but she really loved watching Steve, and talks about him often. As parents we found it pretty weird watching Irwins shows because we both think his style was totally intrusive and fairly irresponsible at times, and we often said so during the shows when they were on TV. But at the same time he was so infectious, his enthusiasm and obvious concern for animal welfare was very warming. And then he'd go jump on one and nearly scare it to death!

It's ironic it appears this awful accident was caused by an animal he perhaps hadn't noticed. He deserves respect for the many good things he did, but he also courted danger all the time and caused considerable controversy, and so should expect the same after his death.

thats just lovely.... he was all about respecting the animals.. and wild life in general, he flirted with danger as part of his livelyhood.. and was never cruel to them. if looking after and feeding crocodiles is "pissing them off" then he's guilty...

Im sad about this.. I loved his show :(

You've obviously never seen him tackle crocodiles and antagonize them. I'm sure he did a lot of great stuff, a lot of it was just stupid and dangerous.

Just for this ridiculous outburst ... it's really only a matter of luck that his life didn't end with a greater controversy than it has...

Steve Irwin was a legend and far more than just a goofy guy on the TV doing wacky things with animals. He did a tremendous amount good work for the environment which largely goes un noticed.

its a terrible, tradgic event and us Aussies are in mourning.

I know what you mean, my 13 year old daughter wanted to be a "crocodile hunter and a ballerina" when she was 5.

I told her early this morning around 1 am (she was up late because of the Labor Day holiday) because I didn't want her to see it on the news. She was pragmatic about it, but a little while later, she came back downstairs to sit with me and talk. Poor kid, it broke my heart. :(

yes it is thanks!

It's ok for you to be upset too. Mourn in peace. You're probably better off not mourning here though.

C'mon, you freaks, grow up and show an ounce of human compassion and honor. Or at least fake it, you won't look so much like an ass.

That final sentence pretty much sums up the rose-tinted tragedy that is celebrity-death-induced-hysteria. "Please don't remember the disrespectful things this guy did to animals in order to attain his televisual success, nor the downright sick acts like holding his baby under his arm whilst feeding a crocodile...", no...just fake it, just LIE about the guy so the tearful minions won't think you're an ass.

Of course, this is a tragic time for those who *personally* knew Steve Irwin, but transform him into the caring, conservational superhero he wasn't upon his death, and it's inevitable that people will remind us that, actually...he wasn't.

Oh he was good at what he did, and we've certainly lost one of the few genuine blokes on TV considering the sea of psuedo-celebrities dominating the same timeslots. But exaggerating the good he did is no kinder to his memory than pointing out (or just plain ignoring) the bad.

Doon, it's obvious you're deeply upset by this news. If you want a sweet little sympthatic thread here's one which is unlikely to be derailed by those who don't feel the same way...

If you're going to misquote me here's the entire sentence again

He may have a been a legend for you but some of us are able to see the wood from the trees in this world. Did you read all my posts ? None of them were as vitriolic as some these, yet you chose to attack me for posting a joke picture in response to a overreaction by another poster, but as it happens, I'm more with them than the ridiculous celebrity worship that I see going on around here atm.

From: someone
I liked Steve too, but when you play with the bull.....you get the horn.

From: someone
I really don't feel all that bad about it. I mean what do you expect? The dude made a living by pissing off aggressive maneating animals. It was bound to happen sooner or later. I hope he at least gets a Darwin award for this year.

From: someone
Yeah, it's too bad he's gone, but it's not unexpected!

I could be wrong, but aren't stingrays fairly harmless? I guess he may have pissed this one off or cornered it.

From: someone
Oh yes you could. I've always thought he was a reckless idiot.

From: someone
Apparently they have his death on film. I wonder how long it'll take to air? (Seriously... I bet it does!).

"Crikey! That was a big 'un. Did ya see that? That ray really got me good! Right through the chest, too! He didn't mean it, though - sting rays are pretty harmless little fellas. Still, judging by this wound it looks like I'm a gonner, eh? Bugger...."

Dasyatids do not attack aggressively, or even actively defend themselves. When threatened their primary reaction is to swim away. However, when they are attacked by predators or stepped on, the barbed stinger in their tail is mechanically whipped up, usually into the offending foot; it is also possible, although less likely, to be stung "accidentally" by brushing against the stinger. Contact with the stinger causes local trauma (from the cut itself), pain and swelling from the venom, and possible infection from parts of the stinger left in the wound, as well as from seawater entering the wound. It is possible for ray stings to be fatal if they sever major arteries, are in the chest or pelvic region, or are improperly treated. Their stingers are normally ineffective against their main predator, sharks.

In this case, it the tail went straight to the chest to the heart and he went into cardiac arrest while they tried to revive him. In a strange way a superhero died today. That guy had some guts... I agree he should have slowed it down a bit after that second (or even first) kid of his. I mean damn, he had alot to lose.

He was a nut :) but an informative nut, who shed alot of info about different animals. My 8 year old did a school project based on things he learned from Irwins Discovery Channel shows and websites. Him and his family also did a TON of work to support wildlife habitats, etc. He did good things. He had a beautiful family. It's a sad loss. I never once saw him intentionally antagonize animals, or harm them. Anyone whos claimed that must have not seen the instance in its entirety...or just wants something else to complain about.

Some of you people are real jerks. Real examples of what's wrong with humanity. "He got what was coming to him," "he deserved to die," "you play with the bull, you get the horn!" C'mon, you freaks, grow up and show an ounce of human compassion and honor. Or at least fake it, you won't look so much like an ass.

I'm siding with the "jerks" on this one. I liked the guy and was sad to see him go, but when someone gets Montecored* it's hard to for us asses to resist a few jokes.

*Montecored- named after Roy's infamous tiger Montecore, who nearly killed him. One gets Montecored when a dangerous persuit (Croc hunting, Bullfighting, Bear stalking etc..) goes very wrong.

By Damanios Thetan: I've been swimming surrounded by stingrays myself, just a couple of months ago, and never ever considered it dangerous or lethal.

I did that too Damanios, in May. I was on vacation in Belize, and on the barrier reef they have a place where you snorkel amongst nurse sharks and stingrays. It was awesome.
We all take risks for our little adventures, and if anyone knew the risks, it was Steve Irwin.

Uh, I think you are the one that never saw him in action. He antogonized animals ALL the time. What do you call it when you pull a snake out of its den by its tail and then pin its head to the ground while you pick it up? That is antagonizing in my book. All those damn croc's he would go bug in the wild??

He played with WILD animals ALL the time. I always thought he was crazy, it is what I think of everyone who treats wild animals like they are stuffed animal toys.

My heart goes out to Terri and the kids
09-04-2006 11:27
Steve's wife, Terri, is from Oregon. A few years back while they were here visiting relatives Steve helped a wildlife safari park build a croc enclosure.

At the time I only lived about 3 miles from that park and my roommate had worked at the park for several years after high school. Long story short, she was still friends with the owner and I got to meet Steve.

I can tell you all from personal experience that he was a genuinely nice guy. He was friendly and self abasing. He was even a bit shy really. I can say without a doubt that he was not in it for the fame and glory. He has a passion for animals and the natural world in general.

Some people here say he got what he deserved. Well I agree. He lived a live of passion that many of us can only dream about. He died pursuing that passion doing the thing he loved more than anything else.

We should all be so lucky.
