( I coulnd't find the Off Topic section so this was my next best guess, feel free to move this if it doesn't belong here)

Steve Irwin, the Australian TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung in a marine accident off Australia's north coast. Irwin was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns police sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time.

Let us bow our heads :(

I just saw this on the news. We get pretty attached to our icons here, I'm expecting a protracted period of national mourning. It's always an odd feeling, you get so used to these institutionalised figures. When Shirley from Skyhooks died (Aussies will know who that is), it was so bizarre, because he'd been on tv my whole life. We'll never hear 'crikey!" again, outside old footage.

Poor Steve :(

"Crikey!"

This isn't really surprising news, I always figured he would go out like this. But I bet this is how he would of wanted to die...being biten/stung by one of the animals he loved the most.

But anyways, RIP, Steve.

OMG YES! I saw that just before going to bed, and almost cried. I even woke my bf up to tell him. It feels so strange... But yeah, I guess this IS the death he wished for, maybe just not so soon, with two young kids .... :( RIP Steve, we will miss your funny "oh LUKE-AT-THE-BOOTIFOL CROCODYYYLE"...♥

My friend emailed me the BBC News article detailing Steve's death this morning.

Yes, in the deep recesses of our minds we all knoew he'd go out in an unconventional way, not unlike amateur naturalist Timothy Treadwell. Steve himself joked about how we all watch in expectation of his demise.

I used to watch The Croc Hunter religiously because I lived to watch this zany Aussie Steve spit at by poisonous snakes, chased by komodo dragons, circled by sharks, or mauled by strange marsupials during banana feedings while his wife looked on in a state of controlled shock.

Watching his show was an experience unlike any other.

My heart goes out to his family and friends.

Oh my gosh! I have been so busy with just getting home from a Labor Day weekend camping trip that I had not heard the news on Steve. I'm still in shock and can only think about how much I adored him and my very next thought is of his wife Terri and the kids. I lost my husband back in 92 and was left with two children to raise and its no easy job. My heart just aches for them all.

It's unfortunate that those who make some of the greatest impacts on the world tend to go so early. He's had a good streak for doing such a dangerous job, but he's helped educate and entertain millions upon millions of people around the world. I'm sure he's having a great time up in crocodile wrestling heaven.
