I really liked that guy. Even though I honestly feel that he should have stopped risking his neck after he had his last kid... :(

I really don't feel all that bad about it. I mean what do you expect? The dude made a living by pissing off aggressive maneating animals. It was bound to happen sooner or later. I hope he at least gets a Darwin award for this year.

Yeah, it's too bad he's gone, but it's not unexpected! :(

Now that I'm a parent I instantly think of the grief of his children and the life they'll have without their father. It's just terrible. :(

Yep... but at the same time I agree with Weedy. it's one thing to support and further a cause, it's another to put your ass on the line repeatedly for it.

LOL! Yeah, I pretty much feel the same way. It's like that guy and his girlfriend who tried living with bears and, not surprisingly, got mauled to death a while back. These people talk themselves in to a sense of invincibility and then inevitably find out one day that they're just as mortal as everyone else. I feel bad for his family, definitely, but he was an accident going somewhere to happen.

I could be wrong, but aren't stingrays fairly harmless? I guess he may have pissed this one off or cornered it.

Dasyatids do not attack aggressively, or even actively defend themselves. When threatened their primary reaction is to swim away. However, when they are attacked by predators or stepped on, the barbed stinger in their tail is mechanically whipped up, usually into the offending foot; it is also possible, although less likely, to be stung "accidentally" by brushing against the stinger. Contact with the stinger causes local trauma (from the cut itself), pain and swelling from the venom, and possible infection from parts of the stinger left in the wound, as well as from seawater entering the wound. It is possible for ray stings to be fatal if they sever major arteries, are in the chest or pelvic region, or are improperly treated. Their stingers are normally ineffective against their main predator, sharks.

It's sad, and in a way unexpected. I mean, you sorta figure this is gonna happen to him someday, but ... wow, this was sudden.

What's interesting is how quickly the news is spreading. From my quick searches the news went out a half hour ago, and yet it's all over the place. His Wikipedia entry has even been fully updated with the new info.

And, one bad thing...I couldn't help but smile cuz this one I actually knew before my mother. She usually gets all these first. :P

Yes, that is the biggest tragedy of all.

This is sad. I know he risked his neck all the time but you couldn't help but like the guy.

It will be very hard for them growing up. Children can be ruthless in how they pick on others; undoubtadly they will quote him to poke fun. It saddens and pains me.

It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest.

That is really, really sad. He had two young children and Terri was often with him on TV. The Discovery Channel suffered a huge loss and though Steve lived life on the edge with dangerous animals, this is still very upsetting.

His main purpose was to educate people about animals and to show people things they would never see otherwise.

It's just such a freak accident that he was stung by a stingray in the heart, and he's always been so positive about them being docile. Maybe he tried to piledrive one, who knows.

R.I.P Irwin!

... Now I'm really sad :(

I did a little more reading on some other sites and found:
All stingray venoms are very similar. They contain serotonin, 5-nucleotidase, and phosphodiesterase. The latter two enzymes are responsible for the necrosis and tissue breakdown seen in stingray envenomations; serotonin is the cause of inexorable pain in the region of the injury.

Apparently, the enzymes cause tissue death, so an injection in the chest will lead to the partial death of internal organs near the sting.

In all the articles I read, they stressed over and over how foolish it is to mishandle or try to ride a sting ray. Because of the location of their stinger and because it deploys reflexively when the fish receives a certain amount of stimulation, it is considered to be akin to playing russian roulette. You just know he was surfing that thing with his hand up its bum. :(

Stingrays are bad, some dude was telling me how they lay burried just under the sand near in shallows, and if you step on them, they'd sting you.

I'm guesing croc hunter went and tried to hug one and mess with it, not a good idea anyways.

That or he may have been close to the sand underwater and put his hand down on one. That is kinda what I am wondering.

Shark Encounter at Sea World was so crowded today that we were forced to escape out an emergency exit in order to keep breathing. By contrast, Forbidden Reef was deserted, allowing us to feed and admire the bat rays in relative peace.

I'd hate to be the person who has to host Forbidden Reef tomorrow. :P

This is so sad. My heart goes out to his family, especially to his wife Terri and kids Bindi and Bob.

Steve Irwin dedicated himself to helping injured animals. He helped to make Australia a safer place by relocating dangerous crocodiles away from populous areas by trapping and releasing the creatures rather than killing them.

He used his zoo and his public profile to raise awareness of Australian fauna and was a passionate conservationist with an innate love for our native animals.

He was an archetypical Aussie 'galah' whose enthusiasm, openness and love of life was irrepressible.

I will miss him.
