I have no interest in reading anyone's blog. Am I missing something? I find the majority of them mind numbingly boring. And sadly, they are also often a venue for self agrandizing individuals who want to hear themselves type, although not always. The only time I'll seek out a blog to read is if I hear someone has trashed me or someone I know. Then I'm in a position where I feel I have to defend myself against the utter tripe that's spewed in them.

I've always enjoyed forums on the hand for some reason. Perhaps because there is more of an active participation from the posters. I'm not sure. Is there a difference?

What about you guys?

I feel the same way, though I do think product review blogs and the like are very useful. If it's just someone's SL diary or commentary I'm not really interested (no offense to any of the bloggers amongst us).

I like forums because all participants are equal. Blog comments are a crappy medium for discussion.

I agree, a forum is a fast moving conversation! You never know what's going to pop up. :D

much prefer forums myself, atleast everyone gets a chance to speak with them. From what i've seen, blogs dont seem to be read that much, even the most notorious sl blogs have fairly few visitors

I am gonna just ride off of Chip's post and say I whole heartedly agree with this comment. :) This drum has been banging since the day of announcement. Now when you relog in to the forum (at least for me) the resident area is collapsed and has to be opened. (Phasing out) Torley has all but given up the ghost on most answers in the question area and just started posting blog links (See my blog, read the blog) like we already should be away from here and over on the blogs. Linden Labs is going to treat this like other policies... they are not going to listen to us, they are going full steam ahead and doing what they said.

This new system already really buts the blah in blog.

I get around 40 unique visitors a day, which isn't a huge number, but I'll live.

Saying that blogs are a crappy medium for discussion compared to forums is like saying that bricks are crappy weapons compared to revolvers - well, yes, but one is specifically designed for the purpose. Blog comments are designed for people to leave their opinions about a particular post, they're not designed for people to be able to conduct intricate arguments on the subject, or indeed whatever subject they feel like. (Livejournal has the best commenting system that I've seen, being threaded, and community features too, but it doesn't seem to be very widely used in an SL context.)

Blogs for me are spread over multiple servers with no common links and are usually incredibly verbose and self centred which isn't a problem as that's what they are there for.

However I say it is a step backward from a forum which is structured and can be ‘skimmed’ to read the threads which interests the user.

New isn't always better folks.

Also I read people’s blogs because of their forum posts interest me. Blogs are not a replacement for forums but an additional component if you enjoy the poster's entries. That’s why I hate the idea of LL ending the forums.

I have a blog, but its just a place where I can vent, babble on about crap and just generally ass about, i dont expect or even really 'want' people to read it persay, it's just my mindless babble, but I have to say I much prefer forums and I get bored with blogs after a month or two.

I do enjoy reading my friends tho, cos it's a way I can keep up with what they are upto if we don't get a lot of time to catch up in world.

Amen! I loathe reading blogs and their hiddeous flat comment system. For me the joy is in the interaction, whether it be humor, rebellion, fighting, or learning. It's all about the forum.

Even the names say it all:
  1. A weblog is a log. Boring.
  2. A forum is a place of assembly. Exciting.

Well don't bloody read blogs then, go to a forum! Honestly, it's like people are actually taking seriously the idea that blogs are a replacement for forums, just because LL said they were. What are you, sheep?

I have always typically hated personal blogs (professional/team blogs can be quite helpful/useful). But I now need a place to post my stupid MM Polls so I made my own blog. I will also put up some random chatter that no one will read. But oh well.

So a necessary evil in order to keep my MM Polls alive!

The Linden blogs will be the official venue for Linden to resident monologues. I mean discussion.

Define blog.

If you mean those journal/rambling type of personal blogs, I'd agree most of them are not worth reading unless you are deathly bored and it makes me feel a bit smarter and holier to say they are boring. However, I personally don't see any reason to actively hate them. To each his/her own, I'd say.

Blog as personal publishing system saves a lot of time hand coding HTML and archiving stuff. Plus the metadata and sydication have a lot of possibilities that still need to be explored. As Chip said blog comments indeed are crappy way of intense discussion and wouldn't replace forums but I've seen a lot of interesting, well-composed and long-term discussion between blogs utilising trackbacks (which Blogger, seemingly the most popular blog service lacks). You obviously need to "get out more". :p

I'm confused by this post as you haven't posted before, so can't really have meant anything...

Well I wouldn't say it makes me feel smarter or holier than thou to say i don't like blogs. I probably feel exactly the same as anyone does when they express their opinion about any given subject. And I agree...to each his/her own. :)

I guess if I had more motivation to read blogs, I would "get out more". I just can't muster any enthusiasm to do so because I don't like blogs.

I'm confused by yours as well. Are you implying that because I haven't posted yet my opinion is somehow invalid? Please feel free to put anyone with a low post count on ignore. We wouldn't want to waste your precious time.

Blog is the fruit of a Democratic plant. So is the forums.

However the blogger is the moderator of its own blog and works just like the market: if your product suck you will not sell anything.

Blog and Forums is not concurrent, it complements.

Well the concensus is this: most of the people who replied here don't like blogs. That's all well and good - you just simply don't read them and go about your business. No one will think more or less of you. Besides blogs and forums seem to be slightly different in the audience focus to me overall. They both serve the purpose of the passing of ideas online but its clear that blogs are geared for a smaller, perhaps even passive audience whereas forums are made for a much larger, more active audience. They can't really compete but perhaps work good hand and hand. I use to run a blog (it contained observations I've made when tranferring from Windows to Linux) but when you post like once every four to six months, you're like blah what's the point and quit all together. I mean really, who has that much to say to post in the stupid thing everyday or every other day. I have personally found maintaining them as boring as perhaps you guys do reading them. It doesn't matter if the person is a deep writer speaking about global politics and peace in the Middle East with legitimate and well thought out ideas or someone writing stuff along the lines of "I slept all day today; please congratulate me' equally boring. Then again, I usually find forums as dull as blogs too and that's why I don't religiously post in them. Take the good with the bad eh? heh heh
