I usually shy away from tackling such important topics here in the SL forums but I think I may be able to contribute here.

There seems to be a few themes running here: This is not fact, this is fact, none is fact, facts only come from old writings, facts cannot be new ideas, I’m right because I know facts, you’re wrong because your facts are wrong.

I hope you all realize that this entire line of personal flattery is a waste of your respective times. If you wish to debate, do it in a way that makes you feel much better! J Like this…


Instead of asking a person for “proof” of evolution, ask them why they think the theories of evolution have merit over all other theories.

Instead of asking a person why they think the Holy Bible is the final authority on the origins of man, ask them to explain, without using the words “God” “Jesus” “Belief” or “truth,” why they think the Holy Bible has merit over all other written texts.

Instead of asking a person why they hold certain “beliefs” on a certain subject, ask them what they think the word “belief” means and of what use it is to them.

Instead of asking a person why they don’t change their mind, ask them to describe the ways their ideas have usefulness in their life.

If we are lucky, we might break down this discussion into feelings and intentions: The two most important and deadly elements to any discussion. Once you master these two parts of your opponent’s debates, you will feel that you are right and quite possibly sway your audience at the same time.

Ok then, I'll go first:


For me, evolution is a collection of studies performed with intent to find data. This gives it credibility in two key areas.

1.) The theory of evolution is active. It is an ongoing effort and those who perform the bulk of the studies do not foresee an end to their intent (they care only that their mission was carried out within parameters of accuracy, not of their final result nor if a result is even probable.) A good example of this is entomologists (bug scientists.) These scientists, while contributing to the theories of evolution, have no direct interest in the theories themselves. They seek only to catalogue and study bugs to the best of their abilities. They serve, above all, the idea that their data can be useful. To whom they do not care.

2.) The Theory of evolution is, in itself, evolving and staying current. The pursuit of a theory, whether religious or scientific, is a pursuit to a goal. However, the mission of scientific theories is to ultimately prove the theory false. This gives the studies of evolution credibility. The pursuit of evolution is a mission to find something new, something different, something which is at first, only mildly compelling.


The Bible has no authority because the Bible is of diminished use to my life. Put simply, I do not heed its message. As with any body of text, it has only limited function in my realm of awareness. Being merely a collection of ideas and stories, it is subject to the same scrutiny as a magazine article or cave painting. In this way, it must be read and understood appropriately. In order to make true use of the information in the Bible, one must consider the context and conditions of the body of work (age, author, political climate, intent of the words, etc.) When viewed in this way, the Bible is merely ancient information and of limited usefulness to society.

People who read this text for spiritual guidance, morality, societal law, current events justification, etc. always do so with other intentions (whether consciously or subconsciously.) They are, first and foremost, seeking something other than reference or guidance. They are seeking irresponsibility for their ideas by consulting a higher power. This is the key difference between theory and belief. If you've ever tried to discuss the Bible without using the words God, Jesus, belief or truth, you know how hard it is to finish a complete thought. It is too tempting to say something to the effect of "I believe the bible has truth because it is God's word and Jesus’ teachings." Which becomes null and void as proof of anything in any realm be it religious or scientific.


I subscribe to theories of evolution because these theories are not final and complete thoughts. The core function of an idea in the first place is to serve as a natural progression of information. Ideas change with time and with other information. Belief and fact, in contrast, are unchanging, aging functions. Their purpose is to stay the same regardless of everything else existing in flux. The ideas of evolution are useful and valuable to me because they afford me opportunity to witness the progression of ideas over time. The progression of evolution spans the classical as well as the contemporary and leaves room for my contributions and input. The Bible does not fulfill these functions in my life. The theory of evolution does not require me to trust beyond reason, believe without merit, resist new information or reject change. These elements are not useful to my continued healthy life.

I feel that I am more clean, healthy and responsible when I attempt to navigate my life using resources that include more than the bible alone. I feel that I am a better person when I resist being limited the the Holy Bible. It is my intention to communicate this to people who ask and who openly discuss things in my presence.

Why not prove that Intelligent Design is Not Re-Hashed Creationism.

Intelligent design was made up in order to get around the Supreme Court's ruleing that Creationism was not science.

Now a Republican Judge has ruled that Intelligent Design is rehashed Creationism and thus not scientific.
