heh the dell fan is calling someone else a robot, quite amusing
fact is, "all the dell you could afford" would get you a better name brand pc i mean i was JUST looking at dell, and found what i would consider a good "starter" pc, a 550$
with bad integrated intel video, slow speed cpu and dinky 2 gig of ram for vista
bounced over to compaq and found their version of it, it has a 500mhz faster cpu, 3 gigs of ram, and eventho it still had a bad integrated video card, it was still a Geforce 6100, which unlike the pos intel in the dell could actually stand a chance of running SL
for 560$
and even further for ~85$ more than the dell i went to ibuy power, where they biuld gamer rigs, and got the almost identical machine, with a 3ghz dual core, 4 gigs of ram and a geforce8800GT
so just price alone dell is a bad deal, combine that with their propitiatory hardware, and their bad business practices (ie the "you just payed 300$ for your free printer, stupid" stories) you couldnt pay me to touch a dell
so there, just some statements that i observed with less than 10 min of shopping tonight, dont be a hater just cause you got jacked by dell and are still in denial

Why is it that so many people with technical knowledge feel the need to condescend and talk down to people when imparting it to someone of lesser knowledge? Why can't it be, "xyz costs this much and abc costs the same but gives better value because......."? Or "for what you spent on this , the same money could have got you that, and in my opinion and experience it would perform better." Instead it's always "I know what I'm talking about, you don't, I've been using computers for 129 years, you bought THAT? It's shit and you are stupid for buying it..blah blah blah........" It's so childish.

so there, just some statements that i observed with less than 10 min of shopping tonight, dont be a hater just cause you got jacked by dell and are still in denial Ugh. I did not get "jacked". My comptuer was a gift since my laptop was dying and i would have been comptuerless, and the person who purchased it for me gave me the option of an HP or a Dell - since it was the only 2 options they could put on their business credit card for whatever reasons why, and since the computer that was dying was an HP, guess which i chose... I am not a Dell fan, I am a Dell user, and I am proud to have a computer that runs SL extremely fast with nearly everything maxed - and no problems. And if that makes me a fan so be it, but any 'equipment' that i own that performs to its specifications and more importantly my needs earns a certain amount of loyalty from me. So yes, you are wrong in many ways here and are just another Techno-Elitist. Welcome to the internets winners circle.

Also like to know what LL is doing or going to do/not do to fix the holes in their graphic card support especially with ATI.

I'm all about finding the best hw etc to have the best experience for whatever the purpose and helping others to do the same, nothing more than that - but for certain people Its obvious.. they are showoffs with 'issues'. Techno elitism/exclusivity? in that case I'd be saying SL should run well with less hw configs, I'm actually saying it should run well with more hw configs than it currently does.

I really appreciate to know.. knows problems... or.. bugs.. because I want a functionnal computer and not... a pain in the neck )) Thank you very much for your answers... and... sorry for my poor english KaRoBelZ You can find the minimum requirements for running SL on Windows, Mac and Linux here: http://secondlife.com/support/sysreqs.php If your new computer meets or exceeds these requirements you should not have any problems running SL.

That's how it should be, but it's not as simple as that :|.

i am using a *ATI* 9600 and have had no issues at all. for even better performance it is still possible to run non-windlight viewers, which are less taxing on your system.

Interesting for such an old card. Some cards work well with SL, some don't (including old/recent/brand new) - the point is LL needs to improve the support for graphics cards. Some users also have different ideas of what decent performance is to them, changing cards may help these users if the card they currently have is not properly supported by SL or is too old. I'll take a look at the non windlight viewers if I have issues with an Nvidia 9000 card. It's a shame I didn't check that with the HD4670 card, others can though Checking because it might show some reason why performance is bad for some older and brand new cards, noone wants to go without the nice graphics of windlight..

I use a non WL viewer with my ATI x300 and am quite conyent with the results. I don't really care that I don't have Windlight graphics.
BTW..I like my Dell, too.

I should say if I haven't already that my goal is 20-25FPS with high settings in complex and busy areas, I know some who have this performance - that is just for the next few years - I expect higher fps later - a silky smooth appearance, many share the same goal. If some don't.. that's fine.

The minimum requirements are a little on the low side. The recommended requirements list is more realistic.

Some other OEMs are up to the same tricks as Dell, Caveat emptor. I'm used to having the best parts for the best money by Build your own methods, it's harder to find that in an OEM box. In the UK OEM overpricing is much more rampant and severe, like everything else in the UK I guess .

Welcome to the internets winners circle. yes i am completely wrong, everyone but dell is lying to me and those were not facts i posted you stated you got the best dell your money could afford you, i countered by doing simple comparative shopping, like any smart person looking for a new anything would (course now its a gift) then i get called a "Techno-Elitist" well your just another crusader, taking any topic that might raise your eyebrow a shade, then turn it into this glorious 1 sided argument like someone just mocked your religion fine, you win EVERYONE GO BUY A DELL i hope your propitiatory power supply blows up and you have to pay dell over 6x the market average and wait 6 weeks, luckily i havent worked at dell in about 4 years, or else it would have been months

Am I an elistist? I hate Compacs because every one I've been close to was junk. HP's? A glorified E-Machine. And I priced a customized Dell to make it a mediocre desktop.....way way over priced!! So I settled for what appeared to be a little higher end..........Lenovo Desktop. Spec'd very good. Even performs pretty good. But I found out last week what "great" hardware they put in the machines. A simple DVD drive failed........quit, just would not even open when I pushed the button. After checking all the power and interface connections I removed it to see the brand/model to see if I could find a replacement for it. Anyone ever hear of "EH Ldt"? Haha.........I figured as much. I figure Lenovo got that piece of crap for about $5 bucks and put all those specs about how great that DVD drive was with Lightscribe and double layer burning..........but it failed after about 9 months in my house and me never once burning a DVD. The most I ever used it for was listening to music CDs or installing software........oh, I watched an occassional DVD from Netflicks. Estimated total usage in hours............maybe 10!! All off the shelf boxes are over priced. Only computer worth the money on the market is the one you build yourself or have built by a trusted company/friend. This kid will never buy another off the shelf computer again.
