From: Lo Jacobs I am very much against this suggestion.
Organizing them according to the time and date added makes sense, why make it more complicated? User experience. Making the classifieds a valuable resource for finding things. Businesses who are willing to pay more for higher placement are more likely to be serious about their advertising (and thus their business) than those who are not. It's a much more valuable metric, to me, than how recently someone put up their ad.

People will pay more to have a higher placed ad, yes, but this totally dicks those businesses who would *like* to grow, but may not be able to due to an inability to bid higher for spots.

The familiar counterpoint to this is, being "blocked" from the Classifieds, they will reinforce efforts elsewhere and seize other advertising opportunities that have not been spotted on masse. That's how the struggles go, huh?

Also, just because someone is willing to pay more $L doesn't mean their business is automatically more relevant.

In fact, this makes it easier for smaller businesses to get in on the classified action, because the barrier to entry is cut in half with the minimum bid at L$75.

From: Enabran Templar A process which includes enormous (by comparison) ads for places like car dealerships who are willing to spend more to get more prominent placement. I'm not sure why everyone who brings up the newspaper example leaves that part out. I guess I think of those big ads as display ads (which I did mention in my post)... I think of classifieds as the rows and rows and rows of little ads. I just think that those of us who are trying to do clever or creative or fun things, but don't have huge amouts of money (because we don't have huge dwell or we're not at a telehub or whatever), should have an opportunity to be on a level playing field once in a while.

I'd like to see some way of measuring relevance via clickthrough, a la AdWords, though that is open to being gamed. Even so, if someone is willing to spend L$3000 a week for exposure, I think they should be allowed to do so and enjoy the rewards thus provided.

What Suzanne said: Default sort order by date and time of posting the ad, sortable alphabeically. None of this buy-your-way-to-the-top thing. coco

I had no locatiosn close to telehubs for a long time and I rarely had much dwell. Those periods were my most profitable. I would have valued having an adjustable means of exposure. Nothing is free and if people want to pay large amounts of money for top placement, I think they're getting what they deserve. In any case, as I have mentioned now ad nauseam, by cutting the minimum price, the classifieds are now even easier to get into. As for the playing field being level, you no longer need to have heavy dwell to rank next to your competitor, as was needed in the days when all we had was Find Places. All you have to do is invest some cash in your ad budget and you can enjoy placement right next to the big guys. That's pretty neat to me.

What good is "getting into the classifieds" if you're always down near the bottom because you can't afford to pump money into classified ads.

At first, I was for the 'premium payment/premium position' argument - it works well for me with AdWords, so why not? However, I think it would be very interesting to see how it would work by going with what some others have suggested: flat fee and default display sorted by date of submission. This gives everyone the chance to sulk at the bottom of the list and revel in being at the top - it makes the playing field somewhat more level for this advertising channel. As LL has a history of experimentation, I think the 'PP/PP' model could be postponed while this other model is played with for a bit. Whatcha think?

What if Z was the first letter of the alphabet? Ever ask yourself that? It is, where I come from.

If the goal is to make it easy to find what you want, a full Boolean search capability would be nice.
If sorting by amount paid helps the user experience by making it easy to find what you want, then why the need to remove the ability to sort alphabetically? If being ordered by amount paid is more useful, nobody will pick the alphabetic sort, and if they do, they will realize that it is less useful than being sorted by amount paid and switch back.

I would like to see it too. Say, with a maximum of 2 ads per day for land owned by the same person/group.

Just incase my post got lost at the bottom of the first page of replies.. I'd like a flat fee with the most recently added at the top, gradually decending.. As per Flips first suggestion.. From: FlipperPA Peregrine

From: Enabran Templar That neat little button that says "Search." And much like the Find Places tab with traffic, whoever paid more will still show up first with the little guy rock bottom. Once again I protest against making the classifieds into another domain for the rich to get richer and the poor to become poorer because no one else but the business giants will get their ad seen.

Not true... I for one am not paying anymore than $250 per ad for TWO weeks, unless LL can prove to me how many people are actually visiting my locations via the classifieds.

I agree, but I also believe that with Find Places and Popular Places dominated by big business we should have some kind of neutral ground so us little guys have a chance at any kind of success.

My thoughts exactly. While the *idea* of a small time seller having the chance to rub elbows with the big guns is attractive, it hardly ever works out that way.

I can honestly tell you that the "big guys" arent at the top of any popular places, and if they are, they are very low on the list...

On one hand, I don't like it. I feel it is hugely unfair to those who are just starting out and can't afford to pay as much for advertising as more established players can. On the other hand, maybe the classified ad section of the M2 will finally start to get more business.
