Craziness in the New Products Forum has me Depressed

This is the kind of day when I just want to throw up my hands and give up on SL and the forums. I try hard to believe that most people are reasonable and want to give and get a fair shake. Then I visit the forums...

New Products section... ratings and posting comments/replys

Those of you who are carrying on a dialog in the New Products forum instead of using it for it's intended purpose need to get your collective selves over to the General section and stop trashing up an otherwise useful area. Don't like the new policy? Then bug the Lindens!

And I do wonder if whoever allowed that forum to remain ratable was on crack that day. We have seen again and again that EVERY useful system in SL will be gamed or griefed. EVERY SINGLE TIME. Having ratings on the Classifieds serves no purpose except stirring up bad feeling and accusations of favoritism/griefing.

But FFS people, is it impossible to just play nice?

I've had the same feeling today. I'm not sure if I even care to post there anymore.

One the one hand, I've seen my gold stars (school again?) drop consistantly every time I've posted something, so I know some twat is going through and giving it 1 or 2. That's fine. I expected that. Allowing anonymous ratings is a retarded thing to do anyway, since we saw how gloriously neg rates were used in world. With anonymity comes asshattery. Nothing new there.

On the other hand, I've also watched peoples' legitimate product threads shuffle off the mortal coil of the front page so that people could hold 1 post/multiple thread conversations, thereby fucking over the same people they were trying to defend. Not the answer to the problem!

I won't be using the star rating system. If people can't decide what they like without seeing how others respond to it first, then they're too wishy-washy for me to worry about anyway.

I haven't been using the stars, I don't see the point.

If we can't comment we shouldn't be able to rate either, cos its really not encouraging or nice to see ppl get one or two stars when they really don't deserve it and as Jonquille says some twat is just going thru rating it for shits and giggles.

I think its really fucking pathetic that we can't all just support each other, I thought the move to disable comments was really stupid, but now I kinda understand why. Some ppl really don't have the brain they were born with. I'm still all up for the no bump idea, but will that stop all the crap, prolly not.

Haven't the stars always been there? Is it only because they were reminded of them?

I favor the comment but don't bump idea myself. There is no reason we can't continue to ask the Lindens for that.

I always enjoyed getting feedback on something. Perhaps some people used it to bump their products, but it didn't bother me. I use New Posts to see what is going on in the forums anyway, so it didn't matter if something was in the "top" of the thread.

The Lindens paid attention to us when we asked for the New Products to stay open, maybe we can convince them to go comment, no-bump and lose the stupid stars.

Nah I'm crazy, so we're in the same boat together.

I anticipated this mess with the stars. Yeah, the stars have been there all along, but they weren't the ONLY thing there. I figured people might stoop so low as to go through giving somebody low ratings for everything, but it still is kind of shocking to hear that it has happened.

I DIDN'T anticipate that there would be a running conversation going on with one comment per thread, though, lol. Anyway, I posted to the hotline earlier today asking if they could give us comment-but-no-bump. That might bring the star business back to whatever level of reasonable lunacy it was at before.

AMEN! The New Product section is no place to bitch and whine about not getting any public flattery/adoration for your stuff, not to mention harassing the content creators who finally get a fair chance of posting their stuff WITHOUT some twit bumping some really old products up and burying their post to obscurity in less than a heartbeat.

If you think you must complain or air out misgivings due to a particular feature there are several threads more appropriate for that than the New Products Forum.


You want comments? You want suggestions for you stuff? Get a survey. If not, tell them to IM or give you a private message. I have repeat customers I go to for comments and suggestions for improvement and their input is far more important and useful than some random forum poster going "Oh wow, nice work!" because you're not sure if he/she is just being nice/trying to suck up/or it's really good.

Every system will have en exploit. There is no system I've heard of that is 100% perfect and not exploitable (mwahahahaha!).

Even I felt a little snarky after visiting the New Product section, which I considered before was my safe haven away from the whining and griping and the typical forum nastiness.

It seems to be that is what people want after all, since they cannot seem to behave like adults. So you can't reply to comments, big fucking deal - the point is to advertise your product. Someone gave you one star? Wah, grow up. I regret having lobbied to keep the forums open in favor having a place where people could freely advertise their products.

Linden Lab has heard the suggestion of no bump posts loud and clear. I am sure if they can implement and want to, they will - but are you going to behave like two year olds and clutter the forum up with shit until you get your way? You ruin it for everyone. That is the whole reason commenting was taken away in the first place - so go ahead and just drop the axe now - it's where it's headed anyway. Those complaining the loudest have no one to blame but themselves.

Apparently I'm the only one who is *glad* the comments were dropped from the New Products section.

Without the comments, it suddenly became easy to tell what was an actual new product post and what wasn't, making it much easier to 'browse'.

Honestly, I don't care one way or the other how a piece of clothing is 'rated', or how many people post to say "Way to go" or "Sexy!" or other things of that nature. When I go into a store I can't see what other people may or may not have to say about the products, or how many 'stars' it got.

What gets my attention is new product postings that show/describe items that might interest me. People posting "woot" 14 times after it did not encourage me to go to the shop to check it out, or to mention it to friends.

As a non-designing consumer, I encourage all designers (especially new ones) to continue to post in the New Products forum. Any stars should be considered decorative only, unless you're still in grade school.

I made a comment today, not targetting anyone and on topic. Then the thread gets derailed by direct personal attacks on me, with lies about previous behavior. I reported it, yet nothing is done about it.

These forums have become a dog's breakfast again.

i guess the stars are my fault. I sugested people use them.

Instead of being whiney i tried to be proactive and come up with a way you could leave positive feed back on peoples posts, they have always been there I just brought attention to them. I guess i should have realized that they could be used for being a butthead too.

i just thought it would be a nice way to say "i liked what i saw" becuase the no reply system does kind of leave it all in the open what people think and feel.
