Ok this is an apeal to everyone, especially content creators posting in classifieds wanting feedback, to turn on private messaging.. Its easy, I swear!! Go to your control pannel and choose "Edit Options", then scroll down to "Messaging & Notification" and the private message section, check the "Enable Private Messaging" box.. Then people can send you messages through the forums by clicking your name on one of your posts and choose "Send *Your Name Here* A Private Message", and you can do the same to them! It also helps people to answer questions, incase you need a fast reply, that you've posted in hotline to linden, where people other than lindens can't post.. And its much better than the star system

I like this idea, save for one thing. I want people to be able to reply openly, so I can occasionally give away a 'free first item' when I release new architecture. It's really nice that people can see who actually got it. It was gonna be a tradition of mine, and now I have to find some other way. Perhaps I'll link to a livejournal or something, but... it's just not the same.

Omg Im bumping this cause..... with all the carrying on about no comments pms would be a great way to do exactly what people are asking for, You can pm the designer with questions, comments, suggestions and feed back. No its not public but its still a way to contact the desigenrs and let them know what you need to say.
Also if you have an honest critique that you think will help this is a much more appropriate way to tell them.

well, I don't create anything, but PM's are a pain in the ass. Seems to me they're just a way for people without the balls to take you to task for your comments publicly to message to say 'you suck asshole!'. Or maybe that's just me

From: Desmond Shang Perhaps I'll link to a livejournal or something Everone who uses the free 20th century style browser Opera gets their own blog - why doesn't the 21st Century style 3D browser Second Life give all its users blogs too?

PMs are also excellent when there is a post you like but it has a tiny flaw in it you want the author to correct so it's perfect - you sure don't want your reply to the post you think is great to just be a little spelling correction.
I sent a PM last night where I thought the author left the word NOT out of a sentence thus reversing the meaning by mistake.
Also some folks might want to visit the User CP in general while they are turning on the PMs. Chainging up your signature might keep it from seeming stale in it's reader's mind. Adding an email or messaging contact might be good or maybe taking out one you forgot was there.
Some folks mey not be aware that we have a what you see is what you get edtor option available , handy for when you want to do some fancy formatting.
Also one will be wanting to include a link of the form secondlife://ahern/128/128 for anywhere you want to promote attendance at since that will be really handy once version 1.8 arrives.

Well, after recieving PMs, you could ask if they'd like them to be published, and have a comments section underneath, edit your post, and add peoples comments, mentioning you've asked their prior permission, as long as thats alowed.. So it'd be.. My item! Its good! Availible here, here and here.. *PHOTO* PM Comments ------------------------------ All comments posted with prior permission So-And-So: This item is so great but with what-it-thingy be able to do this that and the other? Reply: Not yet but eventually we will have an update allowed it to do this that anf the other..

Thanks for this - I hadn't even realised that they weren't turned on automatically! I have to admit - comments via PM about my products would be better than low star ratings - at least tell me what you didn't like about it/how I could improve. It's so disheartening to a new designer to see bad ratings and not quite be sure why. Of course, compliments are always welcome too!

I see it as a way to keep private conversations private. Not everybody has an overwhelming urge to show off their RL angst by derailing useful discussion threads with private comments. If you replaced "private messaging" with "overtly trolling with secret alts" I would definitely agree with you though.
