You know what's scary, Kendra? Sometimes I think our problem has been we're too much alike. I thought this very same thing

Peronally I've always seen us as two sides of a political coin.

Alas, as the sun slowly sinks in the west...and the ship slowly sinks in the bay...I can't but help think of missed opportunities...that one fleeting moment of "might-have-been" that slipped through our fingers even as we typed.

*sigh* Miss Ingersoll, I never had the chance to tell you what you meant to me....

So, out of curiosity -

How many people have LiveJournal accounts?

I'm just saying. not a perfect solution, but a possible one, what does not require people to host a forum at their own expense.

I have always liked SLUniverse.com

It just hasn't been very active, this should change that.

I asked myself the same question as this thread starter. I hate you all, but we need to all decide where to go and go there together.

Seriously I consider you all my forum family and these forums are a way to stay connected even when we are unable to log in-world. I would specifically like to hear from the old timers and come to a consensus about where to go. Seems like SLUniverse is a logical place but I haven't spent much time there and have not made an account.

(VolatileWhimsy) Where do we go from here?
(Ulrika & Kendra) Where do we go from here?
(Celador) The battle's done, and we kind of won,

Where do we go from here?

(Pandastrong & Finning) Why is the path unclear?

But we'll walk alone in fear.

(All) Where do we go from here?
When does the end appear?
When do the trumpets cheer?

We can tell the end is ne - ar ....fades
Where do we go from here?

Something I posted in Robin's blog about the changes to the forums:

I can't say I view this as a positive move at all. The forums were flawed but they were also extremely useful and created a sense of community that is otherwise hard to find in SL. I have met many friends in SL because of the forums. In world discussions are laggy, hard to sit through are are often held at times where people who work during the day aren't able to participate. Linden blogs aren't any sort of replacement for the flow of communication that happened in the forums.
I feel as if LL just wants to end communication with whatever shreds of the SL community that is left. In doing so they're also cutting off our ability to communicate with each other.

I agree with Ingrid and would like to add that I have made many a friend just by being on these forums, people I may have never met in world otherwise. Plus the fact that everything is here in one area, we shouldn't have to go to 87 different websites/blogs to find out what the hell is going on in SL. I am also going to miss the classifieds as I don't go to SL Boutique/Exchange or anywhere else to see what is new. I'm not one to wander around SL aimlessly looking for new items. If I see something I like in the classifieds, I go and buy it. There have also been many times where I post in the products wanted forum to get help one finding this or that. How will we do that now? Why does LL think some lame blog is going to be suitable enough for us?

I understand there is a bunch of stupid repetitive things such as the 'Where's my prim baby, ageplay, furries are evil, great gorean auction' threads, but there are other things to the forums and it is disheartening to see them go. With all the weekly updates that cause more problems than are fixed and now the forums closing, I wonder if LL really gives a damn about us and not just getting their numbers up. Way to go LL

I’m new to SL, but not new to online communities and forums. I see a lot of uproar about the coming changes, and while I understand the sense of loss, I believe there are some myths in place.

Myth 1: The community will have no place to go.

Reality: The community has enough resources and skills to make it’s own forums, which would very possibly end up better than anything run by a corporate entity. And such a forum would be free from company censorship. Let the closing become the rallying point for a new development separate from corporate oversight.

Myth 2: The forums are needed as a voice to LL.

Reality: That voice will either be heard through other channels, or it was never going to be heard anyway, even with the forums. They can squelch resident concerns just as easily without closing the forums. I know another game company that allows no posts about the company itself on their forums and seems to rarely respond to complaints. The presence of an official forum is an illusion of being heard anyway. You are heard or not. If heard, there will be channels for that. If not, no voice is lost anyway.

And wherever you go, there is a risk I will find you. :D

apparently someone beat me to it.. slforums.com claims that it's on the way.

i know there was another site with an impressive set up (not slu or sc), anyone have an idea of what i'm talking about? it was fantabulously designed.. i remember it being green-ish or something.

DUH!

Man are we stupid. I totally see their business plan:
  1. Get rid of the Forums so we cannot hear the whining of our Residents. If we cannot hear them, then they must not be complaining.
  2. Push out update after update without fixing bugs
  3. Alienate the player base so badly that Starax walks
  4. Steal our underwear (except on the Teen Grid)
  5. ???????????
  6. Profit?

This is my last post on this topic since the horse is long dead already. :)

You can't reproduce the SL forums, really. Why? Because no matter how well done and well run, they willl only be known to those who... know of them. The thing about an "official forum" is that aside from the oldbies and regulars, you will always have new people coming in and adding to the mix. That is difficult to reproduce with a third party site, it usually becomes a closed group of regulars with a very small influx of new people. And getting a new forum going , not technically, but keep up participation, is really, really difficult (I have learned). Especially because there will not be just one and people generally don't post on a dozen forums on the same subject.

The SL forums are a reflection of... SL at any given moment. It is a way for residents of all stripes to communicate with each other and LL. I'm speaking of all the forums now, because LL isn't just closing General and Sandbox, and each forum has it's own regulars and it's own little vibe while still allowing anyone to move between them. When you remove it from LL itself, and start splitting up into all sorts of different forums and blogs, it becomes something else.

I guess this means I'll have to take another 2 minutes out of my time to sign-up somewhere else.
I think all signs point to Second Citizen...but the verdict's not out yet.

Well, you could all come in world and help me with my SL Musical.

(4 ex resmods enter an empty stage and start singing together)

One million seventy thousand eight hundred postings.....
One hundred thousand twenty eight near pointless threads....
Three hundred thousand fifty eight snapshots and trollings...
Where the fuck will we go now that the forums are dead?

Second Citizen, SL Universe, That blog by Prokofy?
SL-Boutique, or maybe a shopping review?
One Million seventy thousand eight hundred postings.....
Where will we go when we leave this big pile of pooh?

(swelling music and perfect harmonies ensue)

Oh I think we're fuuuuuuUUuuuuuuuuuuucked...
Oh yes we're fuuuUUuuuUUUUuuuuuuuuucked...

good one, Siggy :D

granted, i've been a member of the SLU forums for a decent amount of time (haven't spent much there, but still.. regisered awhile ago.. i think it was when City of Heroes was first popular around here and there was some sort of place to show everyone who/where you were there).

and i've beena member of the SC forums for almost 2 months now..

but still, your musical IS pretty funny.

I have nothing left to keep me in SL if the forums go. 90% of my time i spent on the forums. SL its self is too full of griefers and idiots i usually just stay in my own sim and shut myself out. LL you just lost yourself a customer.
