The SL Community - where will we go?

Something I posted in Robin's blog about the changes to the forums:

I can't say I view this as a positive move at all. The forums were flawed but they were also extremely useful and created a sense of community that is otherwise hard to find in SL. I have met many friends in SL because of the forums. In world discussions are laggy, hard to sit through are are often held at times where people who work during the day aren't able to participate. Linden blogs aren't any sort of replacement for the flow of communication that happened in the forums.
I feel as if LL just wants to end communication with whatever shreds of the SL community that is left. In doing so they're also cutting off our ability to communicate with each other.

They are also sweeping widescale-inworld issues under the carpet so new users and possible investor/media folk will have no other information than that spoon-fed them by LL.

While I already have forums at my site, I would be happy to volunteer to purchase a brand new domain and hosting package.

I find the feature set available at this location to be overkill fo just forums, but it does allow room for other developments to help the community:

http://www.m6.net/a1developer.aspx

If someone would like to suggest a domain name and even an alternate host I would be happy to buy both under a one year contract and setup vBulletin (if that's what people prefer) immediately.

well actually it will be worse for investor/media folk. cause if i do a search and i come up with the second life official forums im reading htat one, and might stop at that... now if there wasn't an "official" one.. i'll be reading the others...
and to say the least from what i have read i wouldn't touch the company with a 10 foot pool.

How do I,
Get through the day without the forums?
If I had to sit at my desk and work
What kind of life would that be?
Oh, I
I need to read about Gor and Grim Babies
and stolen textures too
Without posts about avie sex
Baby you would take away everything good in my life,

Aimee tell me how
How do I live without you?
Kendra tell me too
How do I live without metairony?
Pandastrong if you go
How will I laugh, trapped in my cube?
How do I, how do I, oh how do I live?

But I doubt investor/media folk are going to take an unknown third-party forum in anyway seriously, as they wouldn't know if it was just a "select" group posting to it, or a general sampling of the SL user-base.

Official forums are almost ALWAYS the most used and taken the most seriously, and often accurately relfect the mindset of the community in general, at least with large-scale issues.

pandatsrong:
A signed paper, and edict from the authorities and we must all leave our home.

Kendra:
Well, it isn't like the LL Forums have been exactly a garden of eden ya know.

Sally:
True

Ulrika:
So what do we leave?

Phedre:
A little bit of this, a little bit of that.
A pot, a pan, a broom, a hat.

Lucifer:
Someone should have set a match to this place years ago.

Billybob
A bench, a tree.
So, what's a stove? Or a house?

Taco:
People who pass through LL Forums don't even know they've been here.

Finning:
A stick of wood. A piece of cloth.

Chorus:
What do we leave? Nothing much.
Only LL Forums

LL Forums, LL Forums.
Underfed, overworked LL Forums.
Where else could Wednesday be so sweet?

LL Forums, LL Forums.
Intimate, obstinate LL Forums,
Where I know everyone I meet.

Soon I'll be a stranger in a strange new place,
Searching for an old familiar face
From LL Forums.

I belong in LL Forums,
Tumble-down, work-a-day LL Forums.
Dear little village, little town of mine.

Cue virtuoso piano player!

Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you've got;
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?

Sometimes you wanna go
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came -

You wanna be where you can see,
Our troubles are all the same;
You wanna be where everybody knows your name.

Eh, you'd be surprised. As a media folk, I posted to a 3rd party forum today asking for people to call me with info. Of course, you take any "official" information gathered from such places with a grain of salt, but they are perfectly legit for gathering people's opinions.

There's always the #secondlife IRC channel over on EFNet. That place always has good company, steady dialogue, and laid-back humor.
