Ooh! Ooh! I wanna rant too!

Gosh I'm so excited...

Ok. First of all, LL's history of consistency has been spotty at best, downright whimsical at worst. Enforcement of TOS rules generally happen only to those that yell the loudest or cozy up to them in their feted corners - or whatever label you wanna call the corner where special favors are garnered.

Second of all, and this one is where I'm gonna sound completely opposite to point #1....what in blue bloody blazes makes a nitwit think they have the right to abuse the events system to get free advertising for their waste of space and prims?

I dont blame LL for sending out a buttload of disciplinary warnings at midgnight (in what some would call a cowardly timing), as anyone with the slightest bit of observational skills would already know by now that's their modus operandi. They're to blame for their not having done so more consistently and more frequently.

What, do you really need a babysitter to slap you on the hands and say 'bad baby' when you abuse the events system, in order for you to act better?

Two words: grow up.

Learn to act like a responsible, contributing member of society and take responsibility for your actions, instead of trying to justify your faults on the faults of LL.

Seems like LL is more than just the only cowards here.

I rarely post on the Forums and rarely complain, but as an active member of the SL population, I have stood in world countless times gnashing my teeth at having to weed through the quagmire on this list. I had faith, sadly misguided, that responsible adults would magically see the light and adhere to guidelines. Pretty sad when you're trying to refer an enthusiastic newcomer to an Event and you can't find an appropriate one yourself within the bloated mess.

Here, here! I heartily applaud Linden Labs for finally taking action.

OK, so where does this put me?
05-07-2006 00:04
My partner and I have our 1st store opening on Wednesday the 10th. We plan on having a "Grand Opening Party" to mark the event, and therefore than to advertise this in the events pages. This will be a one off event. Will I be upsetting people and Linden Labs? I suspect not, as this is a genuine event, but as it involves our business I am not so sure.

Maybe someone can clarify for me please?

Thanks mucho, Bulldog

We are thus all well advised to attempt, in the future, to speak a bit more softly.

As long as it has a host and is of a limited time, then it will be oke. Doesn't really matter where the event is being held.

I'm glad to see King Philip cracking down on some of the corruption here in SL. Bravo, LL!

Ya you should be next on that corruption list.

Thousands of us are waiting for it.

Bulldog, the Commercial section of the Events calendar is intended for just such a thing as a grand opening party (it's in the events listing agreement). As long as you/your partner are present, and the event has a beginning and end time, then you're all set.

I myself have held grand opening parties, and they're a blast. If you'd like some tips, feel free to IM me in-world. Best of luck to you. :)

I think the argument comes from a grey area here. Most event creators in SL are generally tired by the lack of LL support, and the overall notion exists that events are simply around for a fun way to take a break from the real point of SL which is to build, and buy/sell land... to me this is not true. The fact that events are not even viewed as commercial is troubling in the first place.... this is probably why SL doesn't really have any successful options for event-based businesses (especially with the removal of dwell)... but I digress

(SIDENOTE: Some event listings may be errors due to the poor select-location drop down menu. I have no idea why I can select from about 20 random locations in my drop-down menu, none of which being the location for MY events)

Let me ask you this, what goes in the events listing & what goes in the classifieds:

1) A casino at a certain time will have free slotplay
2) A yard sale has just finished being layed out and the owner wants to mention the official opening
3) A store at a certain time is offering a sale
4) A piece of land will officially be placed on the market
5) A piece of land will officially be placed on the market and have an open house
6) A class or seminar that charges admission
7) A club is having an event that charges admission
8) A club that happens to be directly in the center of a mall has an event
9) Storespace or Property Rentals have just become available

....keep in mind some of the previous posts about "commercial" listings need to be in the classified.

(I think people, in general, should rethink all of their personal views so it will be for the good of our entire society instead of what one person personally would prefer most.)
================================
On to my next opinion:

The classifieds is really lame.... bid for higher placement??? More people look at the $0L ads than the 95% of ads in the middle...

The differences? I feel the ones that should go into Events have a social aspect that is not present in the Classified entries.

This is the same as buying a bigger ad. Since the SL classifieds are in list form and all the ads have uniform size, putting them higher on the list is the best representation of this. It may not be the friendliest practice, but it's a good buisness practice.

Honestly, I'm disappointed it took LL this frickin' long to do this. Their neglect has really taken its toll on the events system and and discouraged countless people from even trying to host or attend events. I finally gave up bitching about it when it was clear LL was far more interested in propping up land barons than supporting event creators.

Better late than never, I guess.

seems to me for events...

"Be there or have someone there to host if you're going to post'

...unless you're looking for a free advert

With all due respect, what is so hard to understand about the event rules? Why are you unable to take out a classified ad for your gallery like everyone else

hmm.. so.. you pay for your land.. devote time to the building of it.. then have it open to the public for no charge.. but have to pay for a classified ad.. that seems unfair in this instance at least..

At first thought it seemed to me there has to be an easy answer to this.. but when I thought more I realised its actually a cunumdrum.. an "interesting spots" location be gamed in a week.. filled with sex clubs and the usual complete TRIPE that infests the most popular listing.. (if say you payed to be on it)

it would take actual editorial input from a panel of lindens/impartial residents(lol) to have a decent "interesting spots" listing.. a lot of work...

either way people will be screaming abuse/favoritism..

I mean if I click an event to go see it.. and it turns out to be a non hosted yet still nice interesting location Im still happy I went.. its just when I land in badly teraformed flat land filled with pricey freebie boxes that I get annoyed..

Could you not do "a guide to <your build>" then be there to tell people about it and show them around i.e. an event in the event listings?

If you want just a general listing, then yes it's fair. It's called Advertisement. HOWEVER, why not make an EVENT? That's what the Events is for. Put together an event to welcome people to your build and raise your visibility.

The issue here isn't that EVENTs are being taken off the *EVENT* List, but that non-events are, and people are saying they shouldn't be (which is just dumb IMO.) I don't think there'd be any problem with comming up with an *event* and putting it on the events list. That's what it's for.

I think of a Yard sale as something that occurs infrequently like once or twice a year or (in the case of sl , a month , maybe ) When you have a yardsale all day everyday of the week it really stops becoming a yard sale and starts becoming an outdoor thrift shop. Can you imagine if EVERY store in second life used the events calender to list their store, which is basically what the outdoor thrift stores are doing. You would spend about 25 pages just scrolling through what is going on at noon. It would suck.

-There should be only ONE TAB in the find.

-Listing types should be able to be filtered like file types in the inventory.

-Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) should be available to be used in the find.

-There should be an events crawl (like the news crawl on CNN) added to the client.

Thank you, that is all.

lol, Suezanne!

Opinion:

1)
A casino at a certain time will have free slotplay

An event. Assuming it is hosted, and all the ones I've been to are hosted. One finds out about the free slot hour by looking at the events calendar.

2) A yard sale has just finished being layed out and the owner wants to mention the official opening

Well, not sure what you mean by this. A yard sale should be listed for those hours when it is going to be in operation, and the host present.

3) A store at a certain time is offering a sale

An event, if the sale has a beginning and end time, and the host will be present.

4) A piece of land will officially be placed on the market

Classified.

5) A piece of land will officially be placed on the market and have an open house

Event.

6) A class or seminar that charges admission

Event.

7) A club is having an event that charges admission

Event.

8) A club that happens to be directly in the center of a mall has an event

Event.

9) Storespace or Property Rentals have just become available

Classified.

Being Disciplined
05-08-2006 05:34
Well I do agree that Linden Labs did a marvelous job of disciplining people on the events calendar! I have to say that I was one of them. I had a simple event..."Coffee On The Pier". Just a nice calm peaceful PG event where peeps can just come out and drink coffee, wake up and talk about what is going on in SL or RL. At my event we have a few old timers, a few newbies, and some of my favorite friends!

Two days ago I got repremanded for posting more than 5 times in one day. WOW..UMM the event is only at 5:00am SLT. went to Events and looked, yup yup I see my name once on the events calander, as well as one event. Where they got I posted over 5 events in one day??? I have no clue, and I thought having coffee on the pier was an event, apparently I am missing something ! I intend today later to challenge this! Why don't they focus on more impoortant issues than me and my coffee on the pier!

LL has other things to do than this
05-10-2006 23:00
Personally i dont see why everyone is getting so happy about this when LL is way behind the curveball on many other things instead of wasting time disciplining people for posting in the COMERCIAL events comercial things whether its an add or an event, they can be doing more productive things such as handling griefers and finding ways to stop people from crashing the game, or how about the lag issue in general? I dont know, i pay LL a lot of money a month to play a game who to me care more about people who miss post adds or events or post more than 5 times a day than people who come and harass me on my own property without any provocation or other problems with the game. And of course i know you forum trolls out there are going to flame me, but you know what, I pay a lot of money to play this game and my oppinion is just as important as yours who dont do anything to contribute something useful than just flaming in the forums.

From: Torley Linden
I would just like to clarify that there is a lot of speculation here which is simply not true, and does not apply to the disciplinary actions taken.

First, to my knowledge, not all postings under the Commercial category got warnings. Not even most of them. There were a lot more on that day than was previously counted in this thread, but they have been removed on the grounds of being spam, commercial ads, and soforth--NON-events.

Yes Torley, they ALL got warnings, i counted, why, because i was bored at the time and was checking the police blotter to see if someone actually got punishment for something that really needed to get delt with and all i saw was these postings, and checked them all out in the events tab, and yup, all got busted.
