You know what? People go to clubs in SL for the same reason they go to clubs in RL. To get out, meet people, dance a bit, maybe have a little of the sexxors. They don't give a flying fig if the floors match up or if the textures are the suck. That's not what they are there for. And the clubs have lights, loud music, and fancy loud colors and gizmos for the same reason they do in real life -- it works. It adds to the atmosphere. You go with what works. Yeah you might be able to design something that looks better -- but why? Would it work better? That's really the question. Just because it may be more aesthetically pleasing doesn't mean it is the best option. In SL, like real life, you go with what works. I'm all for good architecture. I spend a lot of time in SL seeking out cool architecture and have started writing a travelogue for the Phoenix Day Spa newlsetter about my travels. I think cool architecture is, well, cool. I want to see it all. But that's me and not the entirety or even the majority of the people who play/reside/whatever in SL. People come to SL for different reasons. A lot of people come for sex. I think cybersex is boring. I'm here to learn to build and to interact with fun people and to find cool stuff. Other people think that is boring. Others are here to make money. Its all good. There's no reason to rag on others just because they don't like what you like. The world will evolve as it will and not as you or I would have it. Best get used to that.

From: Lordfly Digeridoo ... I'm talking about the actual CONSTRUCTION of a club. It's fucking horrible.
Why do club-goers and club-owners put up with it?
It's all shoddily done. Black cube with "space" texture over it, big red sign, impossible-to-find doorway (that is usually out of proportion with SL avatars), annoying flashing prim "lights" on an annoyingly-lit dance floor, covered by a poorly-done particle bomb/generator.... Why why why why why???... Why doesn't the club have an easy-to find entrance? Why isn't the internal part of the club organized in a coherent fashion? Why is everything made out of proportion to SL avatars?... I think there are two factors which explain a lot of it. 1) People want a club to look like a RL club. That alone makes the big cubical room with the flashing lights and the tiny doorway almost mandatory. 2) A great deal of stuff in SL is crappy. If you took all the houses in SL and lined them up for all to see, I bet the same proportion of them would be poorly built and or poorly designed. I am not trying to be negative about peoples building skills just pointing out that in a user created world a lot of things created are going to be less than perfect. I haven't actually seen a lot of really poorly built clubs like you have with seams etc. What I see are mostly just poor designs that attempt to imitate RL perhaps a bit too much. On the plus side there are lots of good clubs. Colette Meji's club Tiger LIly's for instance is excellently laid out with a large door that leads directly to the dance floor only a few metres away.

From: Vivianne Draper Just because it may be more aesthetically pleasing doesn't mean it is the best option. Too true. Doesn't anybody go to the awful dive bar/club in RL? I certainly do and I do so because of the people and the convenience. There can be similar reasoning in SL. Perhaps, LF, you might keep the "riff raff" out by charging a $L entrance fee. Perhaps someone else would keep out other types of "riff raff" by creating a cruddy looking, uninteresting club in an attempt to ensure people only stay because they like the music or conversation. If it didn't work, the clubs that fail to meet the proper aesthetic would fail, as in RL. I am not a club goer, per se, but I do like to get out and wander. My experience has not shown a correlation between my entertainment level and the competence level of the builder of a particular club or meeting place.

Lf So basically, you blew the opportunity 6 months ago and now its too late. What a shame. I was certain I sensed true love there. <img> On a different but definitely related to this thread note, are you like some sort of uber-designer/builder? If so, where are examples of your stuff? I would love to see it.

this is a troll, but sure, I'll bite. i'm not an uber-builder, just competent. I'm just loud enough that some folks think I'm some sort of inspired genius or whatever I'm not, trust me. I just know how to align prims. Reverie 2.0 in Chartreuse South Grignano Public Art Museum and Archway Huber homestead in Maceday Digeridoo Designs skyscraper in Midnight City (also has a portfolio with a lot of pics of previous buildings) Midnight homestead in Chartreuse And the Teen Grid dropoff point is a modification of the SL public Library that used to exist in Gualala. And so on. Lf

Lf Completely NOT a troll. I am honestly interested and will visit these sites. As I said above, seeking out cool architecture is something I like to do. I've probably been to more places in 3 weeks than most people go to in a year. I've already got a working knowledge of the geography and fly or sail more places than I TP.

From: Sox Rampal And we,Eggy, return the sentiment tenfold. No flashing lights,no particles, your on the dancefloor when you walk through the door,it's not a cube,it has a theme,it has a whole floor dedicated to just lounging about with your friends,a lagoon,a fair and a mall. Oh and the colours are pretty too OMG Then... it's not a club! Everyone knows clubs exist for the sole purpose of milking dwell off of noobies! Send me a LM and I'll take a look at your place

New SchmooZe club in Pixel Dreams, by Tya Fallingbridge (who also built most of the furniture), is very nice. Especially with Local Lighting. Very color-coordinated, nice layout, clean aesthetics.

From: Lordfly Digeridoo What you are describing then is not a business, it is a charity. A business exists to make a profit. Why? a $L25 entrance fee makes a club feel "exclusive" to its patrons, keeps out potential riffraf, and offsets your no-doubt sizable tier costs. No one does it for... who knows why. They should, if they don't want to throw thousands of dollars down a hole. And I don't see how these are contentious points about going into a RL club... they exist to make money. Even if they didn't, electricity, water and rent aren't free. A cover charge and charging for amenities is a fair way of keeping it floating. If running a club were all about charity, then no doubt someone could come up with a cheaper way of running them; you don't need an entire sim's worth of tier to build a club; Indeed, a standard 4096 plot would be more than enough, if the space were designed right.
Vendors, dwell events, gambling, etc. are not exactly activities I would associate with non-profit institutions; it sounds like rather they are trying to make a buck, and perhaps failing at it. Truly, good for you. Nevertheless, a sizable amount of people are in SL "for the money". Most folks in SL aren't as charitable as you, giving your tier for a hangout spot without any sort of chance of a monetary offset or reward. Most want some return on their hard work and efforts aside from the occasional pat on the back or a thank you. . Just a couple of notes while I finish the thread and formulate more thoughts probably. One, I go to clubs a lot, and I agree. Some of the top ones? Are fugly. Which is the original point I think of LF's post. Two, I don't think entrance fees would work. If the club I work at began to have them, and I had to figure out everyone that got tped in there instead of coming in the front door? While hosting an event and answering every 5 minutes what the event is and who the dj is? I'd quit. The only feasible way to do an entrance fee would to not allow anyone to tp anyone else in. This negates the whole rankings based upon dwell. Because really, getting on that top 20 list? That's most clubs goal.

LOL, It's like Dianne has this forum time machine so she can talk to Aimee from half a year ago (those posts were from April!) Thanks for the kudos on the club yall. It's the first in a line of buildings using 3D rendering to make the textures. Some dazzling effects so far but more to come

Very color-coordinated, nice layout, clean aesthetics. I have to totally agree with Torley about Schmooze. In my opinion this is the best "visually appealing" nightclub out there. Great use of lighting and when you walk in you could be in any real-world hot spot in a major city. THE ENTRANCE THE DANCE FLOOR WITH LASER AND LIGHT SHOW VIP-CHILL AREAS OVERLOOKING THE FLOOR VERY REALISTIC LOOKING BAR SEATING AREA GREAT TECHNOLOGY. THE DJ BOOTH AUTOMATICALLY TELLS YOU WHAT SONG IS PLAYING. AS FAR AS I HAVE SEEN A FIRST IN SL.

First the 80s room, Club Access and now Schmooze. I never liked clubbing in SL because of the builds, I felt like I was in a porn store or a casino ( not knocking anyone who has a club). Only ones I liked.. was the Level, Jay Knox and PLush, when it was rebuilt in Erotica ( not cause I built it.. just cause it was a cool place that everyone liked and had fun at) I enjoy the night life and i am thrilled to see people happy and listening to music. Getting to know everyone. Wow.. still blushing
