This may relate to some: so, you see that Second Life is billed as "Your World. Your Imagination." Great, what's next? In a computer, you may come to expect a greater deal of control compared to being offline. After all, we can't just make giant shapes outta nowhere while stuck in rush hour traffic. Add to that the context of some, people who are accustomed to interactive entertainment on computers, as well as the counterpoint, fascinatingly enough: people with not a lot of computer experience but who've come here to "get away" from the lack of control they may feel elsewhere.

For some, Second Life isn't an escape from First Life in general, but specifically, they want to feel safe, secure, like they're being held, nuzzling at the gracious teat of Linden Lab. Wonderful. But then, the darkness starts to creep in over time, and it becomes apparent that since this isn't a single-player game, you can't effectively use cheat codes to attain infinite ammo or wealth, and you certainly don't exert control over other very real people—who you may find disagreeable because of their opposing objectives.

On top of that, for some (as I've heard it), it gets more difficult to gauge intentions. Body language on here and other communication signals are not as fluid and expressive as offline, so in instances, text is interpreted wrongly and misinterpretations burst out into angry arguments about WHY ARE YOU RUINING MY SECOND LIFE?!?

As has often been said, including in this thread, the whole "patience is a virtue" line fires straight through, but here's a contradiction for many: how can we expect to be patient with computers? They're our tools, they should do many things faster than we even expect them, and in some cases, before we think of them. For those accustomed to the mindset of 30+FPS online and offline games, this becomes even more disconcerting. There's a paradigm shift because SL's own system requirements are more in line with a 3D modelling app than "most games". And to jest, that while games are in SL's belly, they are not the entire beast—analogous to saying a human is a heart or liver and meaning it literally.

This compound confusion can take time and grace to adapt to, but for those who want answers right now and solutions quickly, like seeing the "blights" across the landscapes removed, it really takes a stressful toll.

I'm happy we have the SL Forums to discuss things like this, because realtime inworld chat can be fleeting, and in a way, while this is digitally transient, it's more akin to stone tablets (editable ones) than writing in sand.

And in recognizing that along with frustration, there's a lot of hope... well, there's a lot of beauty in this. :)

Really? Come on, Cris. This is a single, reasonably sized prim, sitting on the ground, on plots which are for sale at reasonable prices. Are you objectioning to the fact that if you zoom in on them and look carefully, you can see bare avi breasts?

EDIT: P.S. I like you Cris, I just think you are off the mark on this one and would hate to see signage like this getting lumped in with the griefer tactics of Mr. Impeach Bush.

Yeah, the boobs scare me :p No, what I am objecting to is seeing 50,000 of them in a row. Teleport to the plot of land in this picture and then tell me that is not a problem for the people who own land around there. They are ugly as hell, and there is a sea of them. This isn't the first plot of land I have seen with them all around. I have seen houses surrounded by them as well. I am not suggesting they should be removed, but they certainly do not make the areas that are spammed to death with them pleasant to look at.

yep siggy that is what we did... its phantom'd and it falls well within the tos on on our part... of course since it went up we have been nuked, flatulated on, and stolen objects left on our lands, but thats fairly easy to deal with, much easier and less expensive to hit refresh list under objects, and return on any belonging to avatars we dont know then to pay out $600 dollars to get rid of the buttnugget....

See that would just make me giggle - knowing I'm getting right up their nose.

Have some more fun - get his av name - get a 16 x 16 plot with a target - or appropriate impeach the impeacher sign on it and enable damage - now place an av magnet there with their names locked into it... watch em spiral outta the sky and tport home :P

This one MAY get you in a lil trouble - but if they're firing upon you you can always say you're 'playing their game' and adding a lil PVP area to your land :)

Strange though that someone who finds war and violence so distasteful would nuke you though :P

What is wrong with the people who want to crap up this world with this garbage?.

As much as I hate it and personally would take action on it, I do not see why SLifers have such a problem with it?

From reading the postings in the forums I get a feeling that...

A. Most everyone seems to hate GWB with a passion.
B. Most everyone seems to be strongly against censorship.
C. Most everyone seems to support artistic freedom.

If we start censoring individuals even if they are annoying as that person is (at least most seem to think so), simply because we don't like or agree with his political or 'artistic' views... who is to dictate what is good or bad? proper or improper? garbage to be disposed of, or not?

I think everyone should be just happy to see someone dislikes the president as much as they do and that they are doing their little part in ensuring free speech and artistic freedom.

Freedom is not protecting your rights and views, but protecting the rights and views of all.

Remember, garbage is in the eyes of the beholder...

These signs have nothing to do with their creator's view of the president.

For me it's not about the signs - or the views expressed - it's about whether I want the masses to dictate what I can or can't build.

As much as I hate the signs - I hate the precident that would set more.

I think folks have to take matters into their own hands - within the TOS of course.

Right, especially in SL, where there is a high concentration of liberals. So, why preach to the choir on such a HUGE scale?

I don't know, we have many folks including the supporters of he-who-will-not-be-named, who have raged about the suppression of his "free speech", (non-existent in a privately held game btw, but it's a nice thought, eh?) who seem to be all for removing the signs.

When I see art, I'll be right there with you. What we have here is a spinning sign with a simple background and a simple font, hardly art.

I personally am not calling for censorship. What would be nice though is if people would simply be considerate of others. Is that such a big thing to ask of adults? Internet anonimity plus the fact that we don't have to adhere to local eyesore and zoning laws as we do in RL makes for a BAD combo me thinks.

Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and this beholder thinks spinning signs with extremely amateur "art" on them are hideous.

SL is a privately owned and as such freedom of speech is not applicable. It's a nonissue.

Slapping a slogan (or tits) on a rotating box is not art. It's tacky.

Since when has any action that LL has taken on any subject established precedent?

Precedent requires that you remember what you did yesterday and attempt to act in accordance with it today. "Linden Lab" and "consistent" can not be used in the same well-formed sentence.

to me metaverse is some kind of laissez faire infospam. it's like the www attacking you from all sides at once in 3d.

it's like time square but extra loud and super ugly.

ignore?
12-28-2005 08:28
Ok, so we have ways to ban users from our land, and to mute them inworld, and to ignore them in the forums, right? Why not a way to rez-filter stuff they create?

Can any of the scripters out there figure out a way to create an "ignore objects" script that could serve as a client filter that says "don't rez objects created/owned by the folowing list of people/groups". What I'm thinking of is something like the AdBlock extension for firefox.

I suspect that the answer is that it isn't possible with LSL, but that it could be a Feature Request.

That way, everyone could have their own shielded view of the world. ;)

Actually Lazarus is ahead of you on this one Siggy, all his plots now have No Fly/No Build/No External Scripts/UnSafe so basicly you fall to the ground and take damage when flying over his plots. If you survive the fall you then have to walk out because you can't fly or use jump enhancers to get out wich leaves you vulnrable to griefer attacks if someone is that bored to camp near his plots. So right now we have dozens of unsafe zones floating around in various once completely safe and enjoyable sims wich in theory could make for good griefer spots if the sim recieves enough traffic.

Actually no fly only means you can't take off in his plots - but oh so much the better - put a magnet on YOUR land next to his and I bet he slams into his own land just on the border.

No scripts - again - you an jump right over and through them with no problem - I know this as I've been using my own jumper for a year and a half... it also halves your gravity so even if I 'fell' on his land I'd take no damage.
No scripts - so I can't start a script up on his 16x16 plot if I'm under 20m.. whooohoo.
