Have we learned nothing from all the other threads where people make lists of names of people they think are worthy of something? They are never a good thing. Though often well intended, they often have the effect of marginalizing people and making them wonder why a particular person didn't include them. No list would be comprehensive enough of the people I would include as worthy of attention for a variety of reasons, and so I won't make one for that very reason - it would just end up sleighting someone.

LOLEX... case in point... look how Pen posted, and then Ano posted, and then I notice that Jadey's on Pen's list but not me! Don't you know the rules about couples? ;) Hahaha... no, no, no, REALLY IT'S OKEYDOKEY I'M NOT ON THERE. I'm just JOKING. ;) ;) ;) I am just the watermelon trickster of this joint anyway, I'm so meta that verse is terse! There's irony in all of this! (Namely, I will either make very short, or very long lists, but hardly one in between for the reasons Cris pointed out... don't want to leave anyone out.)

There is, however, a new PR Suggestion Box forum:

/229/63/60908/1.html

Emphasis on SELF-NOMINATIONS.

Gosh you're fast Torley - thanks for pointing that out.

Here's the link again: /229/63/60908/1.html

I depend on you all to help me unearth great stories so please make use of the new forum. I want to reiterate that I will need your responses to be concise and relevant. The press is very clear about what they want to know - they ask about events that have relevance to what's happening in the real world, they want to know about businesses and people making money and people who are using Second Life for unusual purposes.

Btw, in reference to the post that referred to me as "some Linden"-- that's me, Catherine Linden and I am the PR department and a good bit of the Marketing department. Just in case you wanted to know.

Thanks,
Catherine

Sorry Catherine, I THOUGHT it was you, but was in a hurry and decided I'd rather keep you anonymous than name the wrong Linden.

Very cool on the PR suggestion box!

But truly, I see nothing wrong with the idea that I, or anybody, couldn't write you a note (not publically on the box) making a case for someone to be considered for this that isn't ourselves.

Plus,

More than half of them don't even read the forums, so it wouldn't be of any benefit.

On the other hand, most really creative people in SL couldn't care less about publicity or glory and the only way they will be 'discovered' or LL ever have the chance to see all the potential they have for good press in these folks is if we speak up and make them known.

It is very understandable why LL wants people to self-nominate, but I hope they will consider the reality that a good many folks would love to be interviewed but won't submit themselves because they don't see what they do as 'different', 'amazing', 'interesting', or 'special' outside themselves.

Hence this thread.

Indeed. But those 10%, as they do here, talk more and to more people than anyone else in the game. Not to mention the point was to bring the names to LL's attention... which it definitely has accomplished.

Please drive through. :)

hehe.. Ok. The reason I didn't mention Torley (and many others) is because I thought the nature of this thread was about people that we would love to see featured, but that you *never* hear about. :p

I could give you two pages worth of people that I think are amazing and would love to hear about. And a good bit of them you all would know their names in an instant.

My point was kinda, it doesn't seem to matter what the list is. Someone always gets left off, or unnoticed. But that doesn't mean I have an issue with the lists. I think they can be fun, informational, and to some I'm sure they bring smiles on sad days.

Honestly, we just have to remember that what is most important is what these people mean to us individually. If I like you, I don't give a flip what others think of ya! :D

Well, to be utterly frank, most of the people I'd call 'deserving' are precisely the last ones to actually nominate themselves. That's both the blessing and the curse of things like this.

On the other hand, I'm sure there are any number of folks who would nominate themselves, but didn't know how.... now they do.... well, if they click through, that is. :)

Yes, there is an upside to being a sycophant!

Unfortunately, the downside is: mired in group think, no ego, inability to think for yourself, more interested in what makes you popular than makes you right, and generally a complete lack of self determination.

Oh yeah, and if SL goes under, oh boy there goes your meal ticket!

The fact is, LL has to walk a careful line here. If they actually come out and agree with people like cienna samiam (no wonder they wanted to remain anonymous) they are simply stating:

toe our line or go elsehwere

But that's not why we're here. We're here because we like the freedom to create and build in the way that interests us. To tell our own personal truths as we see them. When our truths have to become SL truths, then that freedom goes away and this place just becomes pure soul destroying drudgery.

LL needs to think long and careful about that. I'm sure if they look around, they'll quickly realise that all the great builders and creators in SL are generally people who enjoy their own personal freedoms.

And while I'm sure it would be EASIER to have everyone toe their line, they're going to find out that, or at least they should have found out by now, that their truth isn't the only truth. That if everyone simply did what they wanted that SL would rapidly become a very boring place.

What is exciting is when people build and think in ways that are unexpected and dramatically original.

Well, if people want to demean themselves and resist saying what they think is true, they're more than welcome to.

Not something I'm likely ever going to or fortunately need to do.

In fact, I suspect LL will find the harder they push the harder people will push back. And trust me, I will PUSH BACK.

Everyone else will probably just leave and not come back.

Do you really think anyone wants to play in Philip's little power trip?

I mean, besides the sycophants that is.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, Blaze. But I think they would be better off getting out of the business-promoting business entirely.

The truth is, I have no problem whatsoever with LL picking their puppets to put a best face on whatever. That's their decision.

However, to let that philosophy bleed over into things like the developer list or whatever, is sheer stupidity.

I guarantee, if they do that, there will be a mass exodus of major talent to the competition once it arrives.

LL has to realise that strong minds do not like people telling them what to say or think.

Coco, I'm talking about Cienna's little post in the PR Suggestion Box. He claims an anonymous linden asked him to post it. Which is possible, but very creepy and truthfully, very unsettling.

She, sir troll, she... and, as usual, your sour grapes are showing and it is far from an interesting whine.

I'm such a LL puppet. Yeah. Right. Ah well, little minds rarely manage more than little thoughts. (shrug)

Sour grapes for what? That I don't get to be a sycophant? A puppet to put the best face on things?

Yeaaaaah, that's it.

Actually, yes. It is. You just cannot abide the notion that someone who is not you might be asked to do something. It shows in the effort of your attempts to deride, it shows in your trolling, and it shows in your rather limp denial above quoted.

You're like the little engine that could... only you can't. Sad, really, but you seem to shore up your flagging ego well enough by trolling.

I guess you have to take what you can get.

But hey, bottle that whine and age it. Maybe you'll get lucky and it will turn into something other than piss and moan. :)
