Buy nothing is meant to decrease purchases of consumables which are destroying the environment.
Last time I checked, the metaverse is pretty environmentally friendly. All too often the environment / pita movements are co-opted by people who just want to drop out and give up. It really saddens me, because sometimes I think the reason people don't take the environment seriously is because of the people leading the charge don't take anything seriously. Anyways - the point is, the metaverse is about enlightenment, community, and communication. If anything, you should be taking all that money you save from "Buy Nothing" day and spending it in SecondLife. _____________________

No, I would say it's about bring awareness to rampant consumerism as well. Not really about environment on that one day... You may be confused with Earth Day... ![]() _____________________

Surely its the principle? But it might take extra electricity or resources I spose.. The principle of what? And hey, you're kind of "Buying Nothing" when you buy something in SL. Kinda fitting.. _____________________

Buy nothing is meant to decrease purchases of consumables which are destroying the environment. Last time I checked, the metaverse is pretty environmentally friendly. AFAIK, "buy nothing" day is meant to encourage people to realise that it isn't necessary to consume things in order to function or express themselves as people. |

You may be confused with Earth Day... ![]() I think you need to do some research. Rampant consumerism is a problem because it is unsustainable and is ruining our planet. There is nothing wrong with "rampant consumerism" in itself, just like there is nothing wrong with having lots of sex or playing lots of chess. Hell, all that mall walking is great exercise! _____________________

AFAIK, "buy nothing" day is meant to encourage people to realise that it isn't necessary to consume things in order to function or express themselves as people. People are free to express themselves as they so chose. If they wish to express themselves by their purchases - there is absolutely nothing wrong with that and for anyone to say otherwise is pure bigotry. What is wrong is when their purchases start impacting the commons, the environment that we share. When all those plastic gizmos you buy start sucking up earths natural resources - that is a problem. But so what if that's how you want to express yourself? Who are you (or anyone else) to say how we express ourselves is bad? _____________________

It's my choice to attempt to correct what I think is a generally harmful assumption. It's your choice to continue to reply to my posts, as well. Have fun. _____________________

I think you need to do some research. Rampant consumerism is a problem because it is unsustainable and is ruining our planet. So. within the context of it being unsustainable, it is a problem. So there. _____________________

I want to eat a lot of bananas today, because I think potassium will give me supernatural powers!! Please correct me if you believe I am wrong, whether it is my choice or not.. You could just simply have voted "no" in the poll.. _____________________

People are free to express themselves as they so chose. If they wish to express themselves by their purchases - there is absolutely nothing wrong with that and for anyone to say otherwise is pure bigotry. That is true. And nobody is forced to participate in Buy Nothing Day. The point, however, is those who might not wish to express themselves by their purchases, but are forced to, because others do and that creates a societal standard. I think better than a "buy nothing day" would be a "text rebellion day". Everyone stands in one location, wearing the default avatar, and just types everything in text. As in, "*opens the door on her mansion and steps up the central staircase, running a hand over the marble banister*". A reminder that it's only the virtual society's belief that you don't have a house, or look a certain way, if you don't have matching graphics (even though in fact, one typed in text is no less real - both are not real at all - and provides far more freedom) that enables any of the capitalism in SL to operate at all. Knock out the social underpinning - by, say, pricing them out of the market - and it all comes crashing down. |
