From: Kyrah Abattoir its amusing cause i go for food shopping once a week and thats about it lol Kind of part of my point, A good portion of the week for me is a "BND". I dont see what's so novel unless you're trying to send some message up the chain. If there are really people who get twitchy if they haven't purchased something in a given day, well... maybe I'm hanging out with the wrong crowd then. I see Adbuster's site describing it "Look Honey, I bought something today! / I'm so proud of you!" -- and it just sounds ridiculous to me. I always try to go to locally owned businesses - even if they cost a little more - to support them, versus the huge chains that put them out of business. Sitting on your ass and doing nothing, and at the same time feeling like you're doing something, is easy. Actually moulding and directing change with what small amount of power you do have isn't so easy. And that's why I feel that BND hurts the wrong people, while the larger players in the market can just brush it off like an annoying fly. (Wal-Mart makes something like US$40,000 a *second*). A day without sales for a family-owned business can make or break the bills for the month.

yeah honestly if you want to send an 'anti consumerism' message, just stop buying cheetos, PERIOD, or stop buying new socks... 'not buying twinkies on friday' is a non-message, since yer just going to buy them saturday it doesn make a difference.
The whole point is if you REALLY want to make a difference in american culture, alter yer *lifestyle* don just sit on the couch for a day and pat yerself on the back... alot of us honestly have... I don do fast food anymore, or mass market sodas, they were not good for me, and those companies, specifically, stand for alot of the worst america has 'to offer'
BND is a way for a couple thousand pseudo-intellectuals to feel good about themselves, while the other 297 million americans go to wall-mart.
If you want change, CHANGE... YERSELF, don jus prattle about it. don buy stuff jus to buy stuff, honestly think, is this thing going to bring me a little happiness or is it just going to sit on a shelf, etc... if something will make you happy, or might enrich your life, and it is within your means to purchase, there is *NOTHING* wrong with buying it...
at the same time if something won't, honestly, mebbe you need to reconsider whether you need ta spend money on it... in america we are blessed with the means to live far *FAR* outside the realm of physical needs, even low income families can live a life that even just a century ago would have been described as nothing short of ultimate luxury (accessable foods, sweets, 24/7 unlimited free entertainment, etc)
its wasteful spending, or spending wontonly on things that do not enrich yerlife and just go to waste, that is a serious problem. buying things just to buy them, or because mtv told you they were cool

The way I see it, it would be much more productive to have a "Teach Someone Else How to Build" Day. As the saying goes: "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime." Or hook other people by accident.

Some of Michi Lumin's comment are making me question the sincerity of his communism.

Hmm... I feel like I should comment. But it was just a passing thought, and from Kazuo's post, I see the idea hs been floated. Thanks to everyone who showed up. What's funny is gmail is giving me BND ads. By clicking, have I indirectly participated in a buy, by helping google to sell something (a click)?

Almost every day for me is a BND, so I'd be participating by default.

Yet another poll with no "This poll makes NO sense." choice.
What IS the point of such a day in SL anyway?

Even better -- Tomorrow (Saturday 26th) is BUY LOCAL DAY.
Buy only goods from small independant stores in your neighborhood.

Unplug your modem and demand that your ISP pro rate you for today and I will take you seriously. Turn off the heat in your house too.

Heat - woodstove Food - leftovers Electricity and internet - previously purchased for the month ahead I can easily buy nothing today. What's amazing is to watch me buy nothing 6 days out of 7.

Hey guys, as chairperson of the Content Creators and Services Guild, I would like to propose that this year consumers hold their "Buy Nothing Day" on the SAME day as our annual "Sell Nothing Day."
