Not exactly proposing this be done, just interested in discussing the idea and potential benefits/disadvantages. Thoughs? Flames? Rants?

See http://www.adbusters.org/metas/eco/bnd/ if you have no idea what I'm talking about.

SL is not consumerism, but enlightenment.

It should not be "buy nothing day" but rather "spend money on something worthwhile" day.

Like go spend money to register for a course to enlighten yourself.

Yeah, buy nothing on Friday and catch up on Saturday! Never got the point of that silliness. Your needs don't just vanish because you failed to meet them one day.

Given your subtitle, I'm utterly shocked that you don't get the point.

I understand the RL point of this being that they want to cut down on mindless spending and waste, but what possible point would it have in SL.

In SL we don't have pollution or sweatshops or exploitation of young workers... etc. and so on.

I get the point. Perhaps this would be a good idea if your whole life revolved around consuming. You might need a reminder that there is more to life than "buy, buy, buy." But for all that SL is high on consumerism, there are few that live for buying only.

I guess if I had to choose between "buy nothing day" and "build nothing day", and only those two options to choose from... then, and only then, sure. :p

I've been celebrating "Buy Nothing Day" in the following way: For weeks, nobody has bought from me.

I love the insinuation of a black and white dichotomy. So everyone I suppose is either Wal Mart or Noam Chomsky.

What are you trying to do, show those evil evil-doers a thing or two?

It's great when people throw out a nuanced view because it's just too much work, and decide that EVERYONE is either one thing or another.

Kazuo:
1)What have I done to you?
2)What evils have I committed against you or your friends?
3)What lesson do you have to teach me?
4)Do you really think anyone in SL besides maybe one or two people is raking it in and puffing on a big cee-gar?
5)What cause will me not being able to pay tier serve?
6)Does 'buy nothing day' include buying nothing from the immigrant family-run business or restaurant struggling to pay their bills? Or are they evilly capitalistic, too.

As I said, there's awlays a nuanced view to things, but the binary view is *much, much easier* for simple minds to comprehend. You know. "KILL YOUR TV!".. as if anything ever displayed on a CRT is somehow transformed into dreck. But no, saying "KILL THE STATUS QUO ATTITUDE THAT ENGENDERS MEDIA TOWARDS CORPORATE SERVING BIAS AND RETAIN THE GOOD PURPOSES FOR THE MEDIUM" doesn't make a good bumper sticker, does it.

Um, wtf are you talking about. Try actually reading what I wrote instead of assuming I was saying "WE SHOULD DO THIS."
