You know, this must always make Grim Babies business boom, whenever someone gets all outraged in the forums, I had never heard of them til someone freaked out about them, and now I'm tempted to go buy one.

I had never heard of them until the last righteous screamfest, and I am quite tempted to purchase one myself. They sound like fun. Any idea how much they are?

How about spending an evening with Prok?

Haven't you heard? She's actually a gem in RL - this is all a SL role play for him. :)

Maeve: maybe I should show that video to those easily offended by sex in SL to give them a more realistic yardstick of what is offensive.

Regards,

Can we hold you to that?

I have no influence on what people can or can't do in their Second Life, and can only control what happens on my little corner of the grid.

If people are doing something that I personally find offensive, then you will not get the pleasure of my traffic or L$ on your property.

I do wish some of you who like to dig at me would make the effort to seek me out in-world, talk to me, and see what I do. You might just find that I'm not that bad after all.

You know its not that you don't visit properties of people and things that offend you. Its not that you don't spend your $L there. Its that you do that while standing outside and waving a flag letting all and sundry know how offended you are.

Now you are free to do all these things. Just don't be too surprised when people start ridiculing you for the latter.

I can attest to that! :) Lewis has been very nice and helpful to me. We all just have such different views on life.....that's what makes each of us unique. Sometimes some of us are alittle tiny bit more vocal about their views. ;)

I haven't met Lewis either, but he really strikes me as a decent guy. He's sort of like a combo of Mr. Rogers and Rambo.

I've butted heads with him, but I respect his opinion and I trust his intentions more than several others who post regularly.

I just wouldn't hire him as my PR man. (just teasing).

Babies ARE sacred objects.

However, I haven't been moved to check out the grim babies at all, although there's a possibility I might find them at least partly pretty funny.

To the original poster, I, too, would find a lot of things shocking, appalling, and disgusting, if I weren't reacting to them largely with ennui. The only shock art that ever really worked was the original shock art to come to mass attention. (Probably the Jesus/pee thing.) After the initial shock art, everything else was sort of ho-hum. Basically because it is hard to be shocked over and over. Whatever there is, someone will take it to the limit, and things generally aren't too aesthetically pleasing at that edge.

I'm not too interested in shock art, viewing it mainly as a sort of grown-up version of saying naughty words in the school yard.

Yes. Sometimes "tolerance" can be very, very intolerant.

There is a lot more offensive stuff out there - especially in the sexual side of things - but we just have to get on with life.

Lewis

Especially the sexual stuff with bloodsprays.

Ya know, this would be a great way to promote a product. :-/

(Who is also kinda grossed out by Grim Babies, but to each their own, I suppose)

Maybe we could hold a fundraising event for all those interested in purchasing a grim baby, but who lack the Linden$?

So you were shocked appalled and disgusted..well then the grim babies perfromed thier fucntion as art and produced the desired reaction. They have successfully challenged the sterotypes and paradignms we create around the artful representation of babies.

The have poked at the shrine which we put babies in as sacred objects.

What makes this thread memorable is the self-important chest-beating and the I am the Artiste! flummery of many of those who responded. Being offensive is easy, never especially creative (in 5000 years of recorded history, it's all been done ad nauseum), and frankly - boring as all hell. Especially if it's done to promote a "cause".

Make a satirical statement about the "sacredness" of the very young or the protectiveness that adults feel toward them without slaughtering them, cooking them, or sticking your penis in their ear. Put another way, say or do something that Jonathan Swift didn't say and do far better in A Modest Proposal, written hundreds of years ago. Or scenes from Bram Stoker's original Dracula. Or Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur. Or the Old Testament.

Then, perhaps, you can beat your chest like an Artiste.

I always viewed them as a satire on "prim babies" and the whole SL "pregnancy" craze, not about RL babies at all. But we went over this ad nauseum two months ago. However, they are exceptionally well done, from the standpoint of design and scripting, and the creators have every right to be proud of them.

So, yeah, beat your chests, Artistes! :D

I wondered about this, too. If so - beat your chests, marketers!
