Only one problem with this contest.. Does anyone know how long it takes the map images to update? I went to the sandboxes to try my hand at a spam can, when I realized it might not show up on the map for goodness knows how long.
This is not a problem, it's a wrinkle that makes it interesting.

And at the moment it's manually updated, so... who knows?

IM me with map coordinates when you have something ^.^

what do you mean by "zoomed to the max"? Zoomed in as close as it will go, or zoomed out as far as it will go?

I think that even when zoomed in all the way, a single 10x10 prim isn't enough for one letter...

now we're all going to have to go and experiment with prim-writing! :D

sorry i meant zoomed in to the max. nothing of any interest shows when zoomed out to the max :D but you are right, 10x10 is definitely too small to be seen on a map.

I HAVE SPAM IN GRANGE!

Adding the top and meat now. Kinda generic since I such at this stuff.

Grange 109, 157, 93 and it is at least 70 * 90 Taking up 1/4 a sim

I couldn't sell it cause frankly it is huge! Also might have to move it up cause of another building we have but will post that Z if I do.

Im looking forward to seeing all the creative builds designed for the map view. Does anyone know for sure how often the map updates?

Not sure, but I posed the question in the Linden Hotline. I also asked Patsy Linden because chances brought us talking.. but she didn't know. -.-

Some people are using the new map to write messages on their plots.

Should this be allowed?

What if say the largest land seller in SL put "For Sale" on all of her plots in big prims .. would that be OK?
do you really take the time to look that closely at the map? If I saw a crass build from up high I wouldn't stop by there!!!

If it's just as easy as sticking a texture on large prims and offsetting the texture (like people do with Quicktime movie screens to get a bigger-than10x10 screen), then bah, nevermind...

BUT, if it's anything more complex than that, I've got another L$1,000 to throw in to the first person to build us a nice can-o-map spam, provided they then sell it for free or no more than L$10 so we all may properly spam the map.

I've been experimenting with this since the day 1.7 was released. I have a 50m x 100m area about 300m above the Shelter, and spent a day getting the offsets just right to blow the image up to that size.

The result? A blurred mess. It does indeed seem to take a sampling of colors, rather than rendering the actual texture.

So, I went off to converting my 'picture' to colored prims. That seems to work a lot better - but still not good enough. It appears that prims that are very thin don't work very well either.

Waiting for the next map update to see how my latest experiments have turned out :D

Zoom in on Isabel/Wingo to see :)

I can't get into game. Can someone look at Grange and see if there is a big sign that says SPAM or something in the North or Northwest section of that area. You might ahve to zoom all the way in...and maybe post a snapshot here?

Still waiting... doesn't look like the map updated for it yet.

Probably have to link it seperately, as a couple different pieces... Throw those pieces in a box and set it's contents for sale - do-it-yourself spam-can in a box. :D

Yah, I bet it will be at least a day or two, I took down a sign in the air at least 3 days ago... Just logged in now and it's still on the map. >_<

Unless they do some sort of selective map update or something... Anyone know if the map is done all at once as a batch, piece by piece, ect?

This thread discussing the height limits of the world map would probably be of interest to a lot of you...
/142/0d/67882/1.html

Also, I do recall seeing a response to someones question in Hotline to Lindens that said that the map updates were being done manually atm, but apparently they are planning on automating it. During my testing to determine the height limit it took almost a week for updates in some cases.

Ok, but seriously, I'm pretty sure that the map doesn't take the texture itself into account, it looks like it does a sampling of the overall color... Meaning you would have to make seperate prims for each color, ect. Or I could be wrong.

No, you're right. Some w-hatters put an image of an American flag and a ferret in Dicycla, invisible from the ground but viewable from the air. However, the image becomes a giant blue splotch when rendered on the map, since it looks like it reduces down the texture into a single color.

This is nothing more than the modern form of the petroglyph. Keep them unless they form rude words.

And how long before someone complains about crop circles?

For that matter, when do we get CROPS? I mean, you can't have a right-proper crop circle without 'em. It just makes you look foolish.

I declare that someone build a particle corn crop field so that we can make crop circles.
