Some people are using the new map to write messages on their plots.

Should this be allowed?

What if say the largest land seller in SL put "For Sale" on all of her plots in big prims .. would that be OK?

:D

You noticed! See, it is effective!

Now, by what possible stretch of imagination is this "spamming"?

Yes, on their lots or on the roofs of their buildings.

And yes, Jillian, it does work eh?! :D

Well, if 1000s of other land owners started doing it, it might be spamming.

This is nothing new. Nepessing (where my store is) had prims arranged in the name of a store (also the person's SL first name I think) for months and these appeared on the map. In fact, it might still be there, I've not checked for ages.

What exactly do you take issue with, blaze? Do you think it makes the map less aesthetically pleasing? Do you dislike the resultant view of names on top of buildings as a result of this use of the map? Would you like to charge them a fee? Are people spelling things wrong? :p

Or a reduced need for a map key.

No one can overwrite anyone else. No one can make the map blink... it doesn't get in the way of searching the map for what you want (might even make it easier). It doesn't hide the terrain. It doesn't obfuscate anything. It doesn't use up any extra resources. So far, not spam.

Unsilicited advertising... well, in that respect it may be spam, I suppose. But that's a fine fine hair there.

I suppose if I get a few complaints, I'll yoink mine. But I doubt that'll happen.

Oh, and lookie here.

Perhaps I'm not taking issue with it. Perhaps I have a plan to spam the map!

I just thought I'd take the devils advocate and see how effective the arguments are against me before I go ahead and do it.

After all, my ALT can use those arguments when it comes time to defend his position.

Aha, in that case.............

It totally suxs. I dunno why people have to do that. They're just trying to get around paying real adfeartising fees. It so ugly. How we expect new AVs to stick around after having seen such a cruddy map filled with commercial garbage? It totally takes the fun out of getting lost trying to find stuff and stumbling on that great new sex club. You're just an elitist Lord-type that don't get what the rest of us see plain in fron of our fazes!

Yeah, or drawing up rude pictures with prims!

I'm sure a rule that the map must be PG is easily enforceable, though.

Still, it's interesting, because LL has used the map for their logo and I think the SLCC

It would be very hard to determine what is spam and what isn't. If you've ever flown in an airplane in real life you've probably seen many signs from above that you couldn't see on the ground. Especially over airports. Is that spam? Signs after all serve the purpose of orientation and direction. It seems that in order to put the sky writing up you would have to own the land or at least have permissable access to it to begin with. If its your land shouldn't you be allow to put a sign on it?

One concern I had, that doesn't really affect me, but could affect many others and their freedoms is what if someone created something in a mature sim following all previous regulations regarding mature content and it was visible from space and thus the map, have they violated the TOS? Are you no longer allowed to create large scale mature objects that would otherwise not be visible from a PG sim due to the map view?

That's what I mean currently the map view shows ALL BUILDINGS. This includes skyboxes I think. Currently on the land that i live on there is a small area up in the air for workspace and you can definatly see it in the map as it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Yeah I put "No Mercy" above my store (in Degar) so it shows on the map. I did this right after they did the map thingy.
