The reason given to keep the soon-to-be-closed forums open until Monday, that people haven't had time to find other forums, is false. The forum closing announcement was made quite sufficiently long ago and ample publicity has been given to the existence and whereabouts of a number of other forums.

By the way, if you registered at any SL related sites using your SL username and or password, it would probably be a good idea to change the password at those sites.

--- let me add ----

The places one might want to change passwords at would include not only the resident run sites such as those mentioned above but also any other sites you have that use the SL avatar name and password, such as a geocities or yahoo or google homepage, or blogs that you have, or google groups, or IM accounts.

Since the real name was in the compromised information the same might apply to sites and services that use your real name as well.

Sigh, what a pain.

I don't care what their reason is. The forums may be full of two faced, backstabbing assholes but it's still the most centralized and most convenient place to get SL information I could give a flying fu** about 3rd party forums they mean about as much as opening a mc dickeys in your garage and keeping the doors closed.

Oh and yes I have my own forums but they are not meant to be a SL replacement they are for my Island folk though anyone that isn't a flame freak is welcome.

Perhaps they are wishy washy.

Perhaps they are trying to be accommodating in light of their failure to keep our personal information secure.

Perhaps they want to avoid having to process the additional outburst that would occur if they did close the forums on day of such an event: hundreds or thousands of posts and emails from people complaining not only about the security breach but also saying, falsely, that they didn't have time to find a third party forum.

There's nothing wrong with extending these forums a few days, but the reason given doesn't make sense, it's just not true. The "forums are closing in about a month" statement was made about a month ago. It takes but a few minutes to find and join a bunch of third party sites.

If a month wasn't long enough then how can two days be long enough?

Perhaps they hope by keeping the forums open, they can limit the damage to their reputation about this. Too bad they announced the closing over a month ago, so the most vocal of us have already moved on.

Perhaps they are hoping that this will allow people to get out all that nicely pent up rage before they call in on Monday. Man, even my anger level hit a new high and I was lucky enough to remember my answer!

Perhaps, just perhaps they are realizing the even the 'flamed' forums like General are useful. Okay, now I'm reaching.

I was going to say that by keeping this forum open whilst this crisis is being dealt with shows that, perhaps, they have finally realised that the forums have value, and the blogs do not.

I notice still that Philip Linden has been very quiet throughout all of this.

<shrugs> Perhaps they are worried about the ones like mine, that have to use in-world kiosks to allow access?

I doubt it though. I think you're right. They are keeping the forums here open so that they can keep a form of control on the backlash from this.

Hooo boy. This is NOT going to be good.

Scratch that...

It's not good now. It's getting worse as we hear more. :(

*smiles* Okay.. something I just realized. If this had happened after General had closed, guess how packed up with repeated threads that the Second Life Answers forum would be. I mean, we have General and look at how bad it is on that forum.

Not to mention people are going to deliberately 'mispost' their comments everywhere, including the blog. Oh, yes... this isn't going to end well. Gonna rethink closing the discussion threads?

Did you do it from the kiosk? You can get a random password and reset again.

Annnnd. I notice you did not add an email address. That would help...

The kiosk worked fine.

I got email from sldrama before. I wasn't trying to change my email so I didn't alter the email field.

The email I got from sldrama when i first signed up - would that have been an in-world IM bounced to email?

Perhaps its because the blogs software could very well be the source of the intrusion, see this thread
/108/e8/136135/1.html

The forums need to stay in place period, if you dont like what your reading here, then dont read it, move along to something else that does it for you. LL customers need a central place to keep each other informed, i am not leap frogging thru the net to 10 different sites to find info i want, its ridiculous to expect us to. The blogs are a way to keep the customer noise down and that is the ONLY reason LL went that direction.

Seems to me that they must see the need for them to continue, or the extra days would not be happening, as the door to answer in blogs has been shut. During this last escapade i have gleaned valuable information; i never for one minute when this first happened considered that personal info was not protected from this "intrusion".

Am glad the forums were here to keep me informed by ppl that are way more computer savvy than i am.

Imo, it was held open to field questions from perplexed residents who are unable to access LL's customer service over the weekend.
