It's a term used to describe a fictitious condition wherein a small group of people exert control and influence over Linden Lab and where the same group is given unjust rewards by Linden Lab.

It's total bullshit and anyone who seriously posits FIC as an explanation or cause for a given issue finds themselves quickly without credibility. I have seen this referred to as the SL variant of Godwin's Law, which states that the first side of an argument to make a comparison to Hitler or the Nazis automatically ends the discussion's usefulness and, well, loses.

According to Prok, it means "Féted Inner Core" - a group of evil content creators, helpers and so on who have been singled out by LL as favourites for having the nerve to actually help people.

In reallity, it stands for "Furry Interstellar Corps", a crazy bunch of SLers who recently infiltrated Eve Online...

Of course... it could be "Fictional Imaginary Controllers"

Remember that those that expose such things are the first ones to get squished by those in power. Enough said.

FIC = a large section of the sl population which has been maligned and harrassed because of what they chose to do, and what they enjoy in SL by a small group of people who want to dictate what others do.

My understanding is that "FIC" is "Feted Inner Core" - a group of hard-working and talented people who became successful in SL and earned special treatments from Linden Labs - but who now, partly as a result of those special treatments, lead to some residents percieving that certain in-game markets are "solved" by nigh-unbeatable competition, and that certain rewards for in-game success are "solved" by pre-establishment.

As an example, Aimee got on the forum banner because she worked hard and became successful, but any newcomer who (for whatever reason - hey, celebrity's nice, right?) wanted to get that probably would never be able to because a) they'd probably never beat Aimee, and b) even if they did, it wouldn't be in LL's marketing interest to change their branding.

Ah, it's the SL equivalent of the Illuminati, the Secret Masters of Fandom (SMOF), or the Usenet Cabal (TINC).

PS: if the "Forum Banner" is that set of avs next to the SL logo... who are they? I've wondered about that picture... there doesn't seem to be anything particularly special about the AVs shown and it'd be more interesting if they were changed on a regular basis...

But you can have an advantage over other players with ever contributing (much) to SL. For example if you stuck it out through the beta to release and got purchased a lifetime account (or more), that's an advantage over other newer players. Land for which you never have to pay tier. So, it is more than just the hard-working and talented, but they tend to to attract the most daggers.

But as for the forum banner, how many people know the players on it? Is it really that much of an advantage? Plus, it is getting a little dated looking. I bet if a a group of nice looking (not neccessarily sexy) AVs got together with the help of a good graphics artist and wanted to work on a new look for the forums...

In relevance to Prokofy's thread, it's something Prokofy made up as an "evil overlord shadow government that hates newbies and business and controls the Lindens", so that if you ever disagree with Prokofy, she says your opinions are moot because you're "FIC" or "FIC hang-on".

So FIC is everyone who disagrees with Prokofy.

Sure, but FIC isn't about anyone who has any advantage over a newer player. It usually refers to the "content creators". There's fair numbers of lesser-known people with 4096 accounts - they're not generally considered FIC to be knowledge. I can think of newbies who got given free spare land, sometimes even more than 4096sq - they're not FIC.

That was only an example of the type of opportunity that some people feel is now "gone" because of the FIC. It's similar to what Brace posted on her blog a while back:

From: Brace Coral

Even if you are successful, you will not get opportunities in the limelight because those slots are long gone.

Now, that might be wrong. And not everyone cares about the "limelight". But, some folks do, and some folks believe it.

Although I didn't coin this term, here is how I define it:

A pool of known-quantity players the Lindens dipped into whever they wanted to pass out opportunities.

The Lindens have better methods now, so it's not so much an issue.

As for the banners and whatnot, yes, it's absurd those haven't changed. They need to do that.

At first, everyone thought the whole "FIC" thing was funny as hell, whether it was funny because it was prok's debate device, or whether because it was so false and crazy sounding, or if it was just something to do i'm not sure, but that's why you can see FIC posters, and FIC groups all over the place. But none of them existed before Prok said that.

Really now it's kind of annoying and sad that prok still regularly mentions and accuses people of having bad opinions because they're FIC.

You do realize that SL is just like RL, made up of humans. If you really believe SL has no favoritism going on (not widespread), then you live in a delusion. The FIC thing as a true, organized group was a joke, and is today. But some people have the distinction of having the priviledges of being FIC through their close friendship or alliances with Linden Labs. That's life, both in the 1st or 2nd.

Way back when, while Prok was harrassing a neighbor about "King Kong", she created this group in her mind and erroneously mis-spelled "fetid" which became the term coined for her delusions and was perpetuated to ridicule her.
