I agree with you completely - Juro's homes are incredible. I especially like his latest home - it is a completely different style than the rest he has done, and shows his diversity. The house he did for Annie Butler in Stanford remains my favorite house in Second Life after several years - a testament to how talented he is, even surrounded by other great talents. He also happens to be an incredibly nice guy.

WOW .. thanks for the reminder ... I love that house, have since the first time I saw it!

Thanks for the compliments! BTW - Annie Butler's house is the one build that I get the most compliments on, by far. If you've not seen that house - contact Annie - she loves to give tours.

I know there have been some builders groups around, but is there one that is along the lines of a guild or union?

Well, i was sitting in LeCadre' I decided that Sen and I should after over a year finally get a house. Any we have started or commisshed have had to be moved or removed to accomodate our residents....sooo we decided to put it actually IN LeCadre'. Since i have no time to build one, i said "I'll go buy a prefab" So off to Dominion i went:P(my personal fav). Well they didnt have anything that i felt would completely fit the theme sooo... i spent 3 hours exploring new and old prefab companys. HMMM....being i can build myself...4k was out of the question to pay for a prefab. HMMMM....this one i love but..no copy or textures included for 3,800.(and all bells and whistles displayed...which is really what i liked....sold separately) which mean no adding on and customizing it (considering i always go custom or at least it looks it when im done).....
By daybreak i was disqusted....no house under 3,800 that would be large enough for my purpose even resemble working, and those i asked wouldnt allow a copy/mod/no trans verision when approched. Not all were that bad just not what i needed, and OMG if the adv price of 5k is what houses(small enough to be shacks and poorly made) are going for these days Sl is truely going to hell in a handbasket. What did i do you ask? Got Mad...Got to Work.
A friend of mine made a script that allows for push button placement for large structures, easy movement and placement, unlimited linked sections(no fear of anyone messing it up)I wont mention his name yet because im not sure if he wants me to(he already has enough people bugging him for scripts). This eliminated 2 issues..messing houses up whilst dropping by someone that has no clue, and by eliminating that first problem size was unlimited.(well depends on how much room ya workin with). ANYWAY guess who started making prefabs?:P Fisrt one cam out nice...279 prims 40x40 contemprary(less then 3k)..not bad for my first. second im working on. 345prims an counting 50x60(basically custom detailing/size without the hassle of finding a custom builder and waiting 3 months b4 they can even get to you) neither are for sale yet but would appreciate opinions in how to improve them. NO im not advertising here, just read it and also got sticker shock and decided to share how im taking action against. OOO and Kat...please IM me inworld...if ya like what ya see ill give ya the one i have done :( I hate to see someone being blatently ripped off.
*****Edited cause i got asked allotta times for a pic*****

After reading all 6? pages of this post, I have a greater understanding of building and builders. The reason I ended up here, was a search I did on 'setting up a prefab'.

Two weekends ago, I spent a whole day cruising the markets, teleporting to many sites advertising prefabs. I am fairly new, and right now, want something of my own, without putting a lot of effort into building. (that may come later, I'll see). After reading this thread, I have a much better understanding of what to and not to look for, and a list of some builders/businesses to definitely look up:)

However, I still have not found, after cruising many threads and wandering aimlessly through different forums...anything that gives a detailed 'how to' of depositing a prefab on my land..... Any link/directions (specific would be appreciated) would be appreciated; and probably available, I figure, amongst this knowledgeable group:) I'm a little hesitant to buy a prefab until I understand exactly how it all works............chicken in other words.

Thanks:)

Pretty much you just drag it out of your inventory and onto your land, then move and rotate it to suit, uness there are special instructions (which sometimes happens if the prefab is too big to be one linked object).

It's not much different than rezzing any other object in your inventory.

All my houses come with notecards telling in detail how to set them up, which is easy. Plus they are copy/mod so if you mess them up, you just drag another out.

P.S. For mine, anyway, what you do is this:

1. Take the box containing the house out of your inventory and put it on the ground.

2. Click on "contents". Click on the house (and any additional thing, like a step) and drag it into your inventory.

3. While still in edit mode (or go into edit mode by clicking on a tree or something), place the house on the ground. Then you can adjust it and rotate it (do that slowly) and the doors and all the removable accessories will move with it. (Also all the house sections, if there is more than one, of the house itself.)

4. If you mess up, you can just drag another one out of inventory and start again, since mine are copy/mod.

I know there have been some builders groups around, but is there one that is along the lines of a guild or union?

I got this very idea yesterday!

I thought it was such a terrific idea, I was going to start SLBA - Second Life Builders Association! But first I checked Groups, and that's when discovered that quite a few people had this brilliant idea before I did, lol.

So I joined the one that was the largest, 154 people or something, with Bob Bunderfield, I believe it was, as its founder. I did notice there was one that was called Union, too. And there were a bunch just made for a particular building project, and several that were exclusive to just a few members who hire their work out.

I was more interested in an association, though, like irl, where people in the field join the association. The big group seemed to suit that.

I don't have any idea how active they actually are, but you do get this nifty "buider" tag. I thought that was kinda silly, but I noticed this girl asked my advice when she saw the tag, so hey . . . it's pretty nifty!

Seriously, what the fuck is up with the prefab housing market? I charge $L1000 for my homes, and they are mod/copy, but no transfer.

Now granted, I don't offer homes with 30 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, two dungeons, and swinging french veranda doors, but they ARE designed with SL in mind; big areas, camera friendly, open floorplan to allow extensive customizing.

And yet people are getting off charging $L4000 for a prefab? Shoddily done prefabs, at that?

What am I missing here?

a large business oppourtunity sounds like
