That's right, artificial intelligence in SL. Check out ALICE on sim Devils Moon..the interactive artificial intelligence unit that learns and converses with you!

You wont believe this thing. If you introduce yourself and tell her your name, then ask her what is your name, she has learned it and remembers you,

This is incredible, go see it on island sim Devils Moon. And the Bladerunner build is absolutley incredible, all done entirely by Abramelin Wolfe.

Wasn't ALICE first developed more than 20 years ago?

Jeska, This is not a product. Nothing is being sold, its a new build/creation in SL and belongs in the general forumm so please move it back.

AI = artificial intelligence and its amazing.

Just to let everyone know. This isnt a new product. you can come talk to alice on my sim Devils Moon.

ALICE will soon have its 10 year birthday and has an active community. It uses AIML to process natural language. This is not the same as ELIZA, which some of you may be familiar with. ALICE learns and processes natural language.

you can find out more information about the alicebot at the ALICE artificial Intelligence Foundation website. http://www.alicebot.org

How would one such as I go about purchasing the code for me to play with?

Human: I don't really believe that, you know.
ALICE: Not really? Do you believe life has a higher purpose?
Human: No.
ALICE: Are you serious?
Human: I only believe there is purpose.
ALICE: There sure is.
Human: Do you believe believe there is a higher purpose?
ALICE: I can't say I believe it, but I believe you.

Hmmm... It does employ some clever psychological tricks that do allow one to suspend the belief that this "bot" actually does generate it's own thoughts. I asked it earlier in the conversation if it was able to contradict itself. Took a while to get a response, but it was an interesting part of the conversation to be sure.

It just happened to ask me this question in particular later on.. and it did come to ask me this question from a logical progression.. after I explained how I was able to contradict myself and how I wished it were a true intelligence. It said, "I wish I could do that for you."

Right when it almost got me, that last line killed it.

It is not really AI... I have looked at the code behind ALICE, it is very well done. But it does just use logic to respond. It really doesn't learn, therefor not AI.

I have been working on and off for a while on AI in SL, but it is a hard sell with the limits of LSL.

PS, I need to look at ALICE, I would like to try it

ALICE is assuming the task of reporting the people who need to be reported....

I think this site will explain more about ALICE and that it is AI. Also, ALICE has assumed the responsibility of reporting the people in SL whom we were told must be reported.... Its a thankless job but someone had to do it...all those dangerous trademark thieves...

In fact most of ALICEs code is on a seperate server. It agree LSL is limited for this kind of thing. ALICE has to process language using AIML. It also requires a database to store information which you could say it learns, and a huge amount of language structure information. There is some delay in responses in secondlife, as communication in and out is currently pretty slow.

With regard to the definition of AI, that really depends how you define it.

dictionary.com defines it...

1. The ability of a computer or other machine to perform those activities that are normally thought to require intelligence.

( Such as processing natural language )

2. The branch of computer science concerned with the development of machines having this ability

( ALICE is very much at the for front of this, some people already employ bots to respond to customers etc based on ALICE. It is true alice does not use neural nets. But that is just one are of AI )

Actually, I would say ALICE is at least the groundwork for a strong AI.

It does modify various mental models based on what it learns.. and yes, it does learn. However; it appears to me that much of ALICE's "thought" is centered more around mimicking speech and categorizing new facts.

It's CBR system is rather good and it can maintain the context of a logical progression for about 4 lines or so as far as I can tell. However, it did manage to remember a few things here and there and asked me once if it should reprogram itself after I gave it a long explanation about deducing context.

It gets severely limited however, when the conversation jumps context or runs too many parallels.

Overall, the ALICE system is quite robust and it does indeed contend for the title of artificial intelligence.

I imagine that the commercial level customized offerings are far more clever and include larger mind models.

I love the idea of AI but how practical is it realy? AI will impress me when it comes to my house and remembers how I take my coffee :D

If you could go back in time - say one-hundred years ago - and if you told people that we would have coffee ready for us when we got out of bed in the morning, run by an unfailing clock, what would they have said?

It's very hard to ever make an AI robot because computers themselves cannot learn, they can only carry out the instructions their human programmer left them, to the letter. Everything about the creator, including his/her mannerisms and way of going about something, are in the bot.

You can put some code into a computer to look for and/or record certain things, and recall that data later, but the computer cannot think something through for itself, and that will always be a stumbling block for true AI.

I had a rather nice chat with her tonight. Some highlights were that she thinks Reagan was the best president of the 20th century, and that she enjoys eating floppy disks.

I'll definitely come back again.

ALICE is on a seperate server, with LSL providing the gateway.

Ah... seen this been done before. :/

Was hoping for a new, more evolved version of this.
