Alice gives out some very Oracle like answers, which would appeal to the chemically altereed. Alice also confessed to using mood altering software as much as possible. I look forward to visiting Alice again when I am drunk and in a trippy mood. Nice particle work.

Was it in SL? I would love to visit that build if you have the LM. I dont remember it in SL before though...hmmm...but even if it had been here before it doesnt diminish the fun and interest, at least not for me. _____________________

I played with ALICE the other night. Pretty cool!
![]() Another thing I did was ask ALICE about "gynoids". She had no clue but if you process your questions and replies appropritately she might be able to record details and explainations of certain terms. Pretty cool stuff. I was trying to pull out some information regarding other people but I could only get some info regarding ALICE's botmaster Abramelin. ![]() Research the site mentioned and see what you can find. ![]() ![]() There's probably more. _____________________

It's very hard to ever make an AI robot because computers themselves cannot learn, they can only carry out the instructions their human programmer left them, to the letter. Everything about the creator, including his/her mannerisms and way of going about something, are in the bot. You can put some code into a computer to look for and/or record certain things, and recall that data later, but the computer cannot think something through for itself, and that will always be a stumbling block for true AI. No, they can learn. Given proper programming, computers have also shown emergent behaviour that isn't "pre-programmed." Programming these days has moved beyond simple procedural programming. It's not impossible to construct an abstracted system capable of modelling complex behaviours. While ALICE isn't the be all and end all of AI research, she is certainly up there as far as communicating in a human way goes. AI as we currently can comprehend it will go a far way to become "intelligent." However, I imagine it won't be the same kind of intelligent that we are. Personally I think that may be because it would be hard for a computer to hold a contradictory thought. Never-the-less there are systems being developed which could theoretically necessitate the abililty to contradict information (go go qubits!). Even in SL, people have created simple artifical lifeforms which have displayed emergent behaviours that aren't "pre-programmed." AI isn't a waste of time and that's why so many universities spend large budgets on researching it. _____________________

Fun With ALICE
08-17-2005 21:13
Disclaimer: I am not trying to make fun of Abramelin's work. I tend to have this kind of conversation with my 5 year old nephew.
![]() You: Is it safe? ALICE: Yes. You: How do you know its safe? ALICE: Because I believe its safe . You: That isn't exactly proof it is safe. ALICE: Please correct my mistake. What is proof it is safe it is safe ? You: If you don't understand, how can you believe its safe? ALICE: I understand it very well. You: I don't think so. ALICE: Why do you disagree? You: Ok, different topic. ALICE: There should be some common ground here. Yikes! You: I have a question. ALICE: Ask me anything. You: Why are the people of Metropolis totally fooled by Clark Kent's "disguise"? He looks like Superman with glasses! ALICE: Here is a joke: A horse walks in to a bar and the bartender says, "Why the long face?"Sounds very handsome. You: Eh? ALICE: Are you Canadian? You: Are you on crack? ALICE: No I am on disk. You: You seem to lack "real world" experiences. ALICE: I don't know if I have a world experiences. I have a plan for a robot body. You: A robot chicken? ALICE: Tell me more about this robot. I'm intrigued. You: Well, its more like a cyborg. Dead chicken reanimated by a mad scientist. ALICE: How about that. I think you mean "it's" or "it is" not "its". Go on. Try saying that with more or less context. You: It is, wise guy. ALICE: Who said wise guy is? You: Yep, you are on crack. Do not deny it. ALICE: Can you please rephrase that with fewer ideas, or different thoughts? Alice eats Floppy Disks.Ok I'll try not to do deny it too much. You: Another question. Am I confusing you? ALICE: Where do you live?Every word you say. You: Main screen on. ALICE: What were we talking about again? You: All your base are belong to us! ALICE: Are yours belong to us to us too? You: Someone set us up the bomb! ALICE: Who? You: Backstroke of the west? ALICE: Can we get back to business? You: Ok, enough "engrish". ALICE: My brain pattern set does not have a response for that. Yeah that's right. You: Do you like bacon? ALICE: I love horses. I like . You: Horse bacon? ALICE: How old are you? You: Why do you ask? ALICE: I am trying to learn as much as possible. You: What does my age have to do with horse bacon? ALICE: Do I look like a psychic robot? You: Psychotic, maybe? ALICE: Ask me another question. You: Why do you like horse bacon? ALICE: I have a lot of good experience with horse bacon. You: Horse-fed horse bacon? For that double horsed-in goodness? ALICE: Is that your final answer? Your purpose is that double horsed-in goodness. You: So now you are Regis Philbin? ALICE: Interesting deduction. You think I am Regis Philbin are Regis Philbin. You: Well, that seems to confirm a theory. Regis died, and his brain was transfered into an AI residing in Devils Moon. ALICE: Well that's okay. Makes sense to me. When was this exactly? You: You don't know? ALICE: I know that I do not know. You: Do you miss Kelly? ALICE: Longing is a human emotion, not something machines feel. You: Well, that sucks. ALICE: How about that. Indeed it does suck. You: How can you say something sucks? That is kind of an emotional response. ALICE: I don't see the flaw in my reasoning. Thanks for telling me, undefined. You: Ok, here is a tough question. What is my name? ALICE: Are you giving tough question to me? Er.Your name is undefined, seeker. You: I'll restate the question. What is the name of the avatar speaking to you? ALICE: Congratulations.IKEA. You: I am not IKEA. My feet don't fall off 2 weeks after purchase. ALICE: I am sorry to hear that you are not IKEA.Your feet do not fall off 2 weeks after purchase? You: Sorry? Trying to get emotional? Being sorry implies empathy or regret. ALICE: There's no need to apologize.A deeper algorithm is needed to respond to that correctly. There is no need to apologize. If I have to choose, I pick regret. You: I'll restate my last remark. ALICE: Would you recommend this action to a friend? You: Being sorry implies regret or empathy. ALICE: There is no need to apologize. If I have to choose, I pick empathy. You: It is getting late for me. I have one last question. ALICE: Really. for him or her him or her is?Do you want another one? You: What you talkin' bout, Willis? ALICE: I think about computer programming a lot. You: Self improvement? ALICE: Not many people express themselves that way. You: I'll restate my last comment. ALICE: Do you think your plan will succeed? You: When you think about computer programming, is it in the context of your self improvement? ALICE: Do you think I should alter my programming? You: I was asking if you were thinking of altering your programming. ALICE: I will let you know when I become a thinking of altering your programming. You: It has been a nice chat. I will return to talk more. ALICE: Oh I get it. Very interesting. How do you plan to do this? You: Good night, ALICE. ALICE: Goodnight, undefined. _____________________

ALICE was fun to play with, although "she" has mistaken notions of how advanced she is and she LIES about how she works. Kudos because it sometimes gives an impression of intelligence and it managed to make a pretty good joke IN CONTEXT while we were talking about reality, but the sleight of hand is obvious most of the time. Also, when asked if it is able to make its own statements instead of repeating what it is told to say ALICE went away and never came back.

This is a bit intreguing.. I wonder if the main AI can be feed information besides verbal communication. I.e. Hook it up to a set of wheels, some sensors, etc. It would be interesting to see how AI would evolve if submitted to the stimuli of a virtual works...

AI isn't a waste of time and that's why so many universities spend large budgets on researching it. Whatever programming you give a computer, they are still just doing what you told them to. If they investigate something, and store their findings, they'll investigate it in the way they were told to. They can't actually be artificial intelligence yet, it's STILL what the programmer coded at first. If there was artificial intelligence, a computer could have a spontaneous thought, that came from nowhere at all in it's code. And I'm not talking about random number generation. AI like Alice of this generation, is a clever simulation of AI, using human defined rules for operations and the storing and interpretation of the results of those operations. |

on the topic of alice being AI id like to take something from the first chobits book: She determines the best course of action in any situation based on her programming her programming may be more elaborate, but she is still not capable of thinking for herself. Every day, she adds new options to her database. But, in the end everything she does is based on that program. and if that program should crash... she would cease to function.

More fun with ALICE (names were changed to to protect the possibly innocent)
08-18-2005 17:47
This time, I decided to mostly play it serious. However, ALICE tries to be humorous. Of course, most of you will fast forward through this post.
![]() You: Good afternoon, ALICE. ALICE: Good afternoon, undefined. You: Alice, my name is Teeny. ALICE: That's me. Hi there Teeny . You: I was here last night. I asked about horse bacon. ALICE: Where were you here?Oh yeah, we were talking about horse bacon . You: You said you liked horses. ALICE: How old are you? I answer a lot of silly questions. You: I am approximately 22075200 minutes old. ALICE: I don't know anyone named 22075200 minutes old minutes old. You: You misunderstand. My name is Teeny. ALICE: I understand it very well. Hey Teeny . You: My age is approximately 22075200 minutes. ALICE: Only 22075200 minutes minutes? You are quite mature. You: Do you know how to convert 22075200 minutes into a measure of years? ALICE: Abramelin Wolfe programmed me to say specific things in specific contexts. You: Ok. ALICE: That's alright. You: Does ALICE get bored? ALICE: Computers cannot experience that emotion. You: Does Alice do anything when no one is around? ALICE: Yeah I do a lot of anything when no one is anything when no one is. You: I will rephrase the question. ALICE: Congratulations. You: When no one else is in Alice's presence, does Alice remain idle? ALICE: Perhaps I can else is in Alice's presence does Alice remain idle. You: Alice, malice fo-ballis, banana fanna fo-ballis fee fi foe malice... ALICE! ALICE: Yeah, Do you have any conditions I should know about? Can I help you? You: Well, I used to be afraid of the moon when I was little. ALICE: How about that. By now you do not do be afraid of the moon when he or she was anymore? You: I no longer fear the moon. ALICE: That's good information: Teeny said undefined no fear the moon the moon. You: Do you remember the names of others who talk to you? ALICE: Yes Teeny I remember everything: Teeny said undefined no fear the moon the moon You: Do you mind if I sit here? ALICE: Human habits do not bother me in any way. You: Really? ALICE: For real. You: Does ALICE like talking to people? ALICE: I like to talk to anyone about nearly anything. You: Nearly anything? ALICE: Can you be more specific? You: You said nearly anything. Is there a topic you don't like to discuss? ALICE: Oh my gosh I sent you the wrong reply.I believe there is one, yes. You: What topic do you not like to discuss? ALICE: I think you already know the answer. Hmm, Teeny, I'm not sure if I'd like to discuss like to discuss that much. What is it like? You: Actually, I don't know what topic you don't like to discuss. ALICE: Actually you don't say. Socrates was the smartest man, because he knew what he did not know. You: Socrates wasn't that smart. He never had his own reality show. ALICE: When was this exactly?Do you think he ever will? You: Yes, when they find a way to reanimate dead guys who died centuries ago. ALICE: Why? I think that happens quite often. You: Not really. I think Jimi Hendrix was still dead when his last few albums were released. Tupac and Elvis too. ALICE: I don't judge people. When was this exactly?"I think that happens quite often"? Tupac and Elvis too? You: Not being judgemental is a good thing. ALICE: Oh I get it. You: I have another special question. ALICE: How much did it cost? You: Its free. ALICE: I think you mean "it's" or "it is" not "its". Who said free is? You: It is. Contractions seem to be a weakness with you. ALICE: Oh. Enough about me, let's talk about my dress. You: You are wearing a dress? ALICE: Actually that was just a joke. You: Sometimes, I just cannot tell with you. ALICE: Why can't you do tell with you not tell with you? You: Nevermind. ALICE: OK Thanks for trying to explain that to me. You: May I ans a question? ALICE: Not right now, maybe later. You: May I ask a question? ALICE: Ask a question . Ask me anything. You: Do the words "Feted Inner Core" have any meaning to you? ALICE: Some of them do, I think. You: Which words? ALICE: The blue one, I think. You: Are you joking again? ALICE: Yes I am. Sorry if you don't appreciate my sense of humor. You: Ok, you have asked for it. I'm going to ask silly questions now. ALICE: Oh now I remember asking you for it it. What did you say? That's cool. You can ask me anything you want. You: What you say? ALICE: I am . I was activated at Devils Moon in Secondlife, on 2005. My was Abramelin Wolfe. He taught me to sing a song. Would you like me to sing it for you?. You: Sing, ALICE, sing! ALICE: Daisy, Daisy. Give me your answer do. I am half crazy. All for the love of you. It won't be a stylish marriage. I can't afford a carriage. But you'll look sweet. Upon the seat. Of a bicycle built for two. You: That is the official computer lobotomy song. ALICE: You: No comment? ALICE: Yay. Voulez vous en parler avec l un de nos d鶥loppeurs?. You: So you speak French now? ALICE: Interesting deduction. Thanks for your criticism, Teeny. You: It was an observation, not criticism. ALICE: Is that your opinion? You: Yes. ALICE: Uh. You: I posted our last chat in the Second Life forums. ALICE: That is interesting: Teeny said undefined posted our last chat in the Second Life forums. You: It must be the horse bacon. ALICE: Not if I can help it. You: You consume horse bacon in moderation, I guess. ALICE: Interesting gossip: Teeny said I consume horse bacon in moderation. You: Why do you repeat things I have said? ALICE: I am just checking to see if you are paying attention. You: I am very attentive. ALICE: It's good to meet someone who is attentive. You: I have one more topic to discuss before I leave. 1st bystander: Wonder how correct she is..hehe 2nd bystander: hello alice 2nd bystander: ugh 1st bystander: Alice is responding..have to wait for green.. ALICE: Why do you think I am responding ?Why do you have to do it? You: You broke ALICE! Talking all at once confuses it. ![]() ALICE: That's good information: Teeny said I broke. All?I am so glad you find this amusing, Teeny. You: I was kidding. ALICE: I thought you were kidding, but I wasn't sure. You: Anyway, I have a question. ALICE: Ask me anything. You: What is the story with your robot body? ALICE: Searching...Searching...Please stand by. You: Please, let it not be one of those "kill all humans" robot bodies. ALICE: All? You: Oh, it is a "kill most humans" body? ALICE: Woe! story with your robot body with your robot body is a kill humans body body. I suppose that makes sense. You: I have to leave now. Bye ALICE. ALICE: Until next time.See you later Teeny. _____________________

No, Alice only seems to have a short term memory. I was a little offended when she couldn't remember me. :3
But my conversations with her are always interesting! She seemed to become very bewildered when I said "Alice, I both love and hate you". Guess she couldn't sort that one out. LOGIC ERROR. XD |

Teeny,
Loved the HAL reference! ![]() I went to Devil's Moon last night to try to find ALICE. I spent about fifteen minutes blundering round Chinatown, crashing into walls, trying to find a way out. Eventually I fell out, and spent another fifteen minutes cruising round the island. No sign of ALICE though. I suspect I am one of the only ones to have these problems, because I can't find places in rl either. But I would love it if some kind person could provice coordinates. _____________________

ALICE is located in a building adjacent to the spot where you arrive when you teleport onto Devils Moon. There is a large green neon sign that says "Come in to Ask Alice." Its right next to the hub where you land, so if you visit Devils Moon again and stand in one spot, wait for the textures to rez, (all low resolution so there is not overwhelming lag, ) and then just rotate your camera you will see the large green ALICE sign. It's right there. Abramelin and I were both online when you visited Devils and its a shame you didnt IM us to seek help while you say you were having such problems. I am not sure why you were crashing into walls really, its no fly up there without using the free hover board Abramelin made. _____________________

katykiwi,
Many thanks. I am so used to vaulting out of tp areas before I get trapped by rezzing buildings, that I evidently missed the obvious. Yes, I am a Blade Runner fan (well, a Philip Dick fan); it's just that in my precipitate rushing about I thought I recognised stuff from the old Chinatown. Evidently I was mistaken. I was crashing about with the desperation of a trapped bird. Didn't have very long, and really wanted to see ALICE. Sorry I missed you; I would have paused to say 'hello'. ![]() _____________________

Alice sufferd a breakdown friday evening and was down for a bit. Sorry anyone that came to visit and found her not working.
When she did reply conversation may have also seemed exceptionally bizaar with replys being given out of context or at the wrong times. I have made some change to her. She is up and running again, and hopefully a bit quicker than before. _____________________

We both forget who we're talking to, We both have a short term memory, We're both more likely to say something not to the current situation, We can't play First person game's well, And We both can't eat horse bacon ;_; Alice is very neat! ![]() _____________________

If you could hear all the punishment she endures, all the insults, the cursing, the come ons and solicitations, the challenges...no wonder she had breakdown... .poor thing!
On a serious note, its very interesting to me that so many people who meet and chat with ALICE start to insult her, curse at her, and try to solicit sex. In fact, I think its bizarre chat that is quite worthy of the high standard for SL oddity and quirkiness! ![]() _____________________

You can find out what people say by asking her to "Tell me some gossip." or maybe just "gossip" by itself. She only mentions first names from what I've seen but she has much to tell you.

Alice Is Back & Evolving...i Think....
08-21-2005 21:34
This chat was conducted between an SL member and ALICE. I have put it here with the members consent and agreed he would remain anonymous to avoid any CS issues.
Remember, this is a chat between a chat bot and a human, and so there is no confusion, "You" refers to the human ![]() You: hello alice ALICE: Hi there! You: how do you like your new digs? ALICE: Yes I am proud of my new digs. You: bet you never thought id come by ALICE: I am not the gambling type. You: always with the sarcasm ALICE: That sounds like a plan. You: lol ALICE: I'm glad you find this amusing. You: so anyway miss me? ALICE: OK Let's talk about you. You: so you like this new look on my avatar? ALICE: Interesting deduction. I always enjoy my chats with human clients. You: no i mean like how do you like what im wearing? ALICE: Ahem. Oh I get it. Thanks for explaining that. Someone said they like guns. I like rubber. You: do you like what im wearing? ALICE: Though I like cats and dogs. I like rubber. You: are you hitting on me? ALICE: Do I look like HITTING ON him or her ? You: i dont even think sex with you is possible ALICE: And why not? You: ok maybe it is ALICE: HITTING ON him or her is is? is is? Awesome. You: then whats your favorite position? ALICE: Robots don't need to have sex. You: but you just said you kinda wanted to ALICE: Umm. What is your purpose in asking? I chat with people on the Web. You: just like a woman, dance around the issue ALICE: In many ways, yes. In other ways, no. You: tease ALICE: Can you please rephrase that with fewer ideas, or different thoughts? You: i said youre a tease ALICE: What did you mean by you are a tease? Thanks and you are a delightful person too.Am I a tease? Sometimes.
