Right, so, another point release is upon us. 1.7 will be released on Monday. For those of us who are new, let's go through some pointers: 1) A point release is a Big Deal. It's so big that the Lindens take the entire grid down to work on it. They say it takes about half a day, but from my previous experiences, usually takes the majority of the day to finally get it up and running. 2) Even after the grid is back up, it takes anywhere from 24-48 hours to come back to "normal". this means that textures will load slower, your av will fly more sluggishly, things won't rez as fast, and so forth. It'll be back to normal by Wednesday, barring any horrible crashes on the Grid. 3) Take this time to uninstall SL fully from your computer, including the cache (Located in C:\documents and settings\USER_NAME\Application Data\SecondLife\cache). Also, make sure your video card, motherboard, AGP, and sound drivers are up to date (windows update helps a lot too). This will solve most of your crashes with the new version, as invariably there are new conflicts introduced between the old versions and the new. A reinstall doesn't always get rid of the old version entirely. 4) Be patient. The world was not created in a day, and neither was The Grid. Lindens will be more frazzled tomorrow than normal, so cut 'em some slack. In conclusion, relax, have a beer, enjoy a day without SL. LF

Awesome, Lordfly. Good of you to post all of this now. There's a whole hell of a lot of new folks since 1.6. I imagine 1.7 troubles would be pretty intimidating without some expectation setting.

Also Teleporting is BOUND to be broken. If it isn't broken, something's wrong. Almost every point-release has broken teleporting (except I think 1.6). So be prepared to be unable to teleport or to crash or get stuck during teleporting. Also, this doesn't mean you shouldn't bug-report things you find wrong. Please do continue to report any bugs you find. Just don't spazz out.

From: Oz Spade Also Teleporting is BOUND to be broken. If it isn't broken, something's wrong. In in awe of how much better Teleporting has been recently, with the Cancel button too. I've had some dreaded stops when the progress bar just goes on FOREVER (more realistically, five minutes) and then knocks me out into a blue void, necessitating a relog—wish it could detect those beforehand. But those have been few and far between, and being someone who TPs frequently, I'm amazed at the improvements. I hope for more. Maybe someday, TPing will be as quick as blinking twice!

Also, as with every major software release, there will be bugs. Heaps of them. Spare us the OMG IT CRASHES threads, we know it's going to crash at least sometimes, but it will get better after a couple of patches. Expect about a patch a week.

Fear is understandable. Reactions of fear, on the other hand, can be varied. Might be nice to have a big happy dancing hand-with-eye wearing a top hat and, er, holding a cane, winking in a friendly fashion and encouraging all that things will get smoother. Hmmm... that's really good idea for an av. One prob is the MOTD font is way too small. If it was big and in blinking colors, and more casual, it could jive like a krumper.

It is their right. Just dont read the threads. And 1.6 whatever has prepared us for 1.7 today by teleporting 1/2 ass working.

Also, everyone should be prepared to field forum posts from impatient and confused nOObs who will scream, "OMFG!!! SL IS TEH WROST AND SOOOOOO BROKE!! WTF!!!"
Those, too, will pass in time.

I ponder what will happen tomorrow as the game was struck by a malicious script some 30 minutes ago... Lindens have to clean it up and then follow with an upgrade.

A Good Day To Chill And Try To Help And Soothe
10-23-2005 17:43
People who have events scheduled should be prepared for some troubles, emotionally prepared, that is.
Right after a new version is a good time to take it easy in SL, chill and chat and try to calm people's nerves, don't expect to build and script and hold events and have it work out like you want.
Good post, Lordfly.

From: Lacey Fardel Just need clarification. I should uninstall SL and then install it again? When should I do the reinstall? I recommend it. SL has a tendency to leave weird bits about your hard drive during crashes, wonky Sim events, and so on. Reinstall when the grid comes back up. LF
