Unfortunly I'm pretty new to the game, and well, everything fun seems to take $L that I don't have. Unfortunly, I don't know scripting/building/avatar skills, and last time I played Tringo, I could never win. *Sighs*

Is there in jobs or something that I might be able to do, or will there be a way for the people who run this to up the weekly amount for us basicers to get a little bit more weekly money. I'm not saying as much as the preieum people, but just like around 100 or something?

Hi Flashfire :) The best place to find people advertising jobs is in the employment forum. The economy isn't quite well developed enough to have a lot of them but there are some out there. The easiest thing to do in the short term before you find your niche is to just buy some L$ on GOM. $4 will get you $1000L. http://www.gamingopenmarket.com

I understand where you're coming from, Flash. You won't find too many around here who agree.

There used to be a lot of ways you could make money. You could host events. You could depend on your stipend.

Now, you either need land (you can make money from Dwell; run a search on the forums on this if you like :) ) or you can sell products/services. You can also refer friends to the game, that makes you money. And if you attend events that pay out, you can try making a small income that way.

Good luck. I do sympathize.

There are also money trees scattered throughout SL. You can do a search on the forums to find the location. There are also places ingame that have a teleporter that will take you to a tree. My place in Wolof has one.

I've been to a few of the money trees, but I'm not entirely sure how they worked, it mention something about fruit, but I've never seen any fruit on the money trees. Someone would have to explain to me how to work one of those.

Hey there,
here are a few ways *I* can help you and other newbies

All these will be in Le Cadre Island, of course hehe

I have a money tree in Le Cadre

Yahtzee - Free to play and if your score is over 275 you get L$50

Free Money ball inside Club Pure Passion that automatically activates when 10 people are within range.

We also hire event hosts.

hmm I know I am missing something, I will get back when I think of it lol...

Oh and Welcome to SL :)

^^ Thanks very much. *Blush* I'll have to look into those. I'm still wondering about the Money Trees though. ^^ Someone will have to meet me at one sometime and show me how they work.

The most important thing, Flashfire, is not to get too pessimistic before you've really tried things out. There's lots to do that is fun that does not cost money, and plenty of things to see and people to meet that won't cost you a dime. In terms of making money in world, its a big jumble of people trying different things... some work, some don't. Important thing is not to give up but keep your chin up.

You might find that you are actually very good at building or creating textures. I can't tell you how many people have told me "I can't draw" but who actually were good artists once I forced a pencil into their hand. :)

Concerning money trees - click on the link in my signature. When you arrive at one look up in the tree for dollar bills, bananas, apples and cherries. Click on any you see. If you don't see any fruit, the tree hasn't been donated to lately. But the dollar bills will sprout every 20 minutes.

Other ideas on making money: attend events - often they give away prizes, watch the Employment forum, spend some time to learn how to build something basic but unique -then rent a spot in a mall to sell it.

Good Luck

Believe me, if I was a bit more computer illterate, I would consider building or anything, but I don't know jack squat. *Sigh* I'm starting to get majorly dissapointed. I hate getting only 50 a week compared to the 500 that premieum members get, especally when I can't do anything.

Edit: *Sigh* Wish everything I wanted to buy online didn't cost a fortune. *Mutters angerly*

Awww hey Flashfire. Welcome to Second Life and sorries to hear about your frustrations. Lemme tell ya tho, some of the masterbuilders and other talented people of our world started with little prior experience before taking things one day at a time. It's somewhat a matter of being relaxed about things and just taking the learning curve as inspiration strikes you, so it'll be more fun to you.

For me, I didn't start building until recently, and even then, I'm just an occasional dabbler but at least I have that option wide open. Don't close any doors but leave lotsa room for future possibilities, 'cuz ya never know! Now, in the rare instance that building never personally appeals to you, there is one big thing you can focus on -- and this one of my prime interests in SL -- CONNECTING WITH OTHER PEOPLE. :D

Hang out in the Welcome Area and in clubs and other gathering locations, strike up conversations with new friends. Who knows, one of your pals might be a budding or established designer, and you could get clothes -- or if you make friends with some of the scripters, maybe they'll let ya beta test their products and you can get stuff that way too. But remember the foremost priority: friends first before #s of L$s and you just may find yourself with mo' money as a side effect. And if you feel frustrated, hey, feel free to take a break from SL!

More free stuff? Check out the great free resources inworld, from the Free Bazaar in Stillman to the GNU Wave one. If you need landmarks or help getting there, just lemme know, send me an IM! You can also check my blog, the URL is WWW.TORLEY.COM -- I highlight kewl freebies from time to time, as well as my adventures in places all over the gridverse and great people too. Speaking of which...

Yeah, SL is about the people! =^_^=

P.S. If you're curious, I am on a Basic account.

When are they going to open up the First Bank of Second Life, so new players can knock the place over for some cash? :D

Yeah, I met a few nice people, but still, there is stuff I'd like to get that clost 800 and above, and yet, I don't have it at all. *Sighs and shakes head* Sad how much this cost when you don't have the money to pay for it.

I really do feel bad for you Flashfire. I can guess what you need that costs over $800 and I can't imagine going through Second Life without the necessary parts. When I was new I went to a zillion events every day and managed to win enough of them to be able to afford the essentials fairly quickly.

If you can't build, script, use Photoshop or are rich enough to buy Lindens with real money I don't know of many ways to make money. I am not trying to discourage you but it is mainly the rich people in second life who will tell you that anyone can learn building etc and make a ton of money. It's all lies.

Not everyone can learn these arcane skills. I gave up trying months ago when I decided to stop beating myself over the head for trying to learn to something that I will NEVER learn to do.

Yeah, its mostly avatars that cost this much. *Shakes head* and I did have a nice job at Club Elite until Pat had to sell it, bleh, and now I'm back to where I started and all. *Shakes head* Ugh, there was an avatar I was looking at, a non-morphic Dragon that cost 3000 lindens, bleh, just don't ever see that happening, and the Luskwood ones are 900, and a majority of others are 800, ugh.

Well, I can understand how you feel, but if you really want something you need to go out and get it.

From: Thomas Alva Edison
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Note: Edison had no hearing in his left ear and limited hearing on his right. Despite this, he is responsible for some of the most staggering advances in sound transmission and storage. Never let limitations become excuses.

I started in SL with no goals and no real business interest. Occasionally I spent four bucks every few weeks to buy a neat toy, but mostly I just ambled about building things and meeting people. Truly, there are very few things that you *need* in order to have fun here.

I taught myself a lot of skills and eventually was able to make a great business here with a really fun product. I paid other skilled individuals to help me in the development of this product; they filled in my skill and knowledge gaps. The result really pleased me.

Basically, if you want or need cash, get up and get it. Four bucks isn't much to spend -- just hold back on your lunch for a day. L$1000 isn't too hard to make. Just teach yourself a few basic skills and start helping people out.

SL is wildly cheap compared to other services. Just don't let yourself be conned into a mental haze of consumerism. There's a whole lot more to this place than that. But if you need cash, you're the only one who can provide it with any reliability.

If you really, really want something but can't afford it, learn to make it yourself or swallow the big bill pill. Many an impressive business has been created on such.

This is excuse-talk. One of my favorite designers taught herself GIMP, painfully, over her first month here. Her clothes could easily go toe-to-toe against the more established designers even then. She had to *work*, but she got results.

Now, I'm not the sort of person who can script and I don't see myself ever learning. But, as in reality, there are as many opportunities to make money as there are potential customers and unique ideas. You don't need to be good at everything. Just good at something and willing to put some effort into it.

edit: Oh, and one more thing. I'm not wealthy at all in my first life or second. I'm a broke business student in RL and was quite broke in SL, too. From a business perspective, there's no easier place to start a business than SL. No inventory to manage, initial investment is incredibly minimal and the opportunities for market research before and after you enter the market are phenomenal.

I'm honestly getting sick of people telling me to make it. I have no techicial skills, and I tried making the simplest thing on that Gimp, a shirt, and I couldn't, so if I can't do that, theres no way in hell I'm going to be able to make something as complicated as an avatar.

No, I suppose there's no way at all.

Welp. Good luck, then.

Look, fella, you asked for ways to make money and ways were presented to you. You didn't want to work at it. You're in some sort of nasty mood because nothing in the world is free. Don't be upset if people arch their eyebrows in response.
