Well I don't really know, since my inventory never loads completely (but yay we have 200K players!), but I'd say under 5000.

I try to keep mine down to12k; right now it's pushing 14. Most of it is freebies and textures!

Noone should ever yell at anyone about having bloated inventories. But nobody should bother feeling sorry for hoardish people when half of their overbloated stash vanishes overnight either. Linden Lab are foolish enough to not impose a capacity; but they're not foolish enough to guarantee that they can keep track of unlimited numbers of items.

I'm around 13,000 items currently and the bulk of it is clothing textures, boxes, promo shots etc. as well as build copies, snaps of events/parties/odd only in SL moments. Oh and prolly more notecards than I need but havent' taken the time in a loooong while to cull.
As our inventory tools have improved I've been able to remove un neeeded dupe items, things named Object and such, that's gotten me down from the 15,000 - 17,000 count and improved my load times considerably.
Some day I'll get the notecards in hand and then I suspect I'll lose another thousand or so.
