I had wondered what was going on w/ the new products forum. I totally support allowing others' to comment on products. Creators old and new alike appreciate an 'atta boy' after all their hard work, I know I sure did the one time I posted my new stuff.

I support this as well and all the other suggestions before this thread to have a reply no bump feature. What I don't support is the idiots that are making a bad situation worse in the New Products forum and you know who you are.

Signed this day 6 December 2005, Desmond Shang.

I want to restore my tradition of giving away one free house in forums when I announce a new one.

The idiots making a bad situation in the Classifieds aren't much of a problem, as they will stop doing it, probably sooner rather than later.

The reason I am not putting "signed" to this is because of what Torley said. If it DOES mean that LL could no longer expect support from the forum owners, then it probably isn't worth it.

If it means that a botch-up somewhere means a wipe of the entire forums, then it certainly isn't worth it.

If I knew that these things would be almost impossible to ever happen, then I would sign this.

If that could happen, though, I would ask for a new forum or something, while keeping the classifieds as they are.

Either that, or go back to the bumping business.

What Coco said is something I believe should be read over more carefully and actively addressed. :) Just as we wouldn't reasonably expect feature implementations in Second Life without some further understanding of how it all works, this is similar. It's been established the SL Forums run on vBulletin—it says so at the bottom of each page!

Out of curiosity, I followed this more. Did searches. And I found other vBulletin users who wanted to sort by Thread Creation Date but did NOT because it was an unsupported feature. Some went ahead and took that risk. I'll quote myself from another thread:

From: Torley Torgeson
Connexions from the vBulletins forums... plugging them into here... knowledge is power! Looks like from other things I've gleaned that it's been a requested supported feature for awhile now. There's a strangely soothing comfort in knowing we aren't alone in the universe.

Requesting a mod that allows users to reply, but does not bump the thread

Thread Display by Date Not Last Post?

Wanting a feature is certainly a start, but knowing more background, researching clues, is all important to understanding why we were in this situation today.

It's great to see the enthusiasm, I'm all for that! However, I suggest that in addition to stamping and signing for this, that more research be done and understanding be gained to set ourselves up for future initiatives.

Cani, you said this:

From: Canimal Zephyr
PS- I asked a linden, & yes, you CAN make a forum sorted by date. & If you can't it would be nice if someone who works for LL bothered mentioning it. . Hopefully at some point we'll get enough attention from Jeska, or Robin, or whoever, & even if they don't bother changing it they could atleast tell us why they think it's such a good idea. Cos so far I don't see any reaction from them to suggest the reason they did it wasn't to save themselfs some work.

Which Linden did you ask? :)

I'll sign...I asked this very question in the hotline forums and got this response from Robin...

From: Robin Linden
Since the classifieds are meant to be a free advertising option, we removed the reply option. This allows the forum posts to act more effectively as ads and also dampens the 'bump' instances.

In my post I asked for sort by date created rather than last post and that is the response I got. I wonder if my post was even read.

anyway, yes, sort by thread creation date instead of last reply, that solves the bumping problem and allows for feedback in the correct spot.

I use it on multiple boards i run. The default standard is there is no Show thread based on creation date in a forum. So whichever linden said there is is true in somesense. On vbulletin's hack site, vbulletin.org, there is a modification for 3.0x line -

"This hack will add a new sortable column to your ForumDisplay, as well as the UserCP for Subscribed Threads, that will show the Date of Creation of each of your threads. In addition, you can also sort by Creation Date via the Display Options of ForumDisplay."

VB Org link

However I dunno how extensive the modifications to this vb is so i couldn't begin to guess how much work it is to add this, however since I believe nothing has been done with the forum listings just account db it should be no big deal.

Signed...not sure if it's technically possible but if so it would be great.

As a new designer who's seeing her ratings being deliberately reduced I would definately prefer to have those not liking my work tell me *why* they don't - what's wrong with it? What makes it so bad? Just having a rating of 'this stinks' doesn't encourage new content from new designers. I have had to struggle with wondering if I'm really that bad! To have a more even representation in the form of comments of why someone did or didn't like it would be so much more helpful and far less discouraging. I kept an eye on my new product today and know that it has received some 1 star=terrible votes even though it does not deserve this in the slightest - not trying to boast - but I can't see how it can be viewed as terrible, maybe not someone's style but that hardly makes it a terrible product!

So from a new designer's point of view - if people can't comment because it's unfair to bump then surely people shouldn't be able to rate either, as this seems to be being misued, again to give unfair advantage.

Just my opinion.

Support just means they'll help out if you have problems however it's been quite sometime since someone needed help on it which is also a good sign. (Most people have moved to 3.5x), but normally hacks if you follow the instructions are very easy to install and normally dont come with problems.

Well, I'll let you guys figure out all that technical stuff.

My question is, can they make it no-bump but yes-reply without putting themselves in peril?

This is a key question which needs to be discussed in detail a LOT more.

For anyone and everyone who wants a SORT BY THREAD CREATION DATE order here, you owe it to yourselves to check all this out.

This shard of the future may very well hinge on what we learn. :)

I have a corresponding blog entry, titled "Classified". :D
