Linux Client a Priority?

Why should LL invest all this money in building a client for an OS with single digit desktop market share? Couldnt't that money and efforts be spent on something that would affect a larger segment of the population. It is bad enough they waste efforts on Apple with it's 2% market share that is sure to decline with their lastest idiotic monopoly moves.

SL could benefit much more from Mac or Linux people than the few percent they share from the market. Linux people are techies, which could help great scripted things happen in SL, well, Mac people are diverse, but there are many graphic artists and also many not-that-computer savvy people who use Macs. They both bring diversity and value in SL, I think.

Most of my friends use Linux at home, and most importantly, I do too. So in my world the majority of the population can't play SL.

It worked in linux with WINE but since 1.6 I can't make it run. So I'm seldom in SL now and dropped all script/build projects I had.

Remember when they said us linux users would have a portby the end of 2003. Oh you don't?
http://lindenlab.com/press_story_6.php
Go ahead and check yourself then. Its going on 3 years now since us linux users were lied to about getting our own port. How many paid for SL because you were lied to. To be honest this is false advertisement. All of those linux users who were lied to should be giving the option to receive a full refund. The product does not work on linux as they said it would. Thats the facts, i'm not trying to add more flame to the fire. I'm just pointing out the bloddy obvious.
To LL
Make the native linux client so that
#1 You cover your arse #2 no one won the lotto with out buying a ticket *aka you can only sell your product to those who can use it* #3 You all ready promised it. #4 Would you rather more lame windows code running through your server, or linux code. *they run the server on linux for a good reason =)

When you design software and you are trying to MAKE A PROFIT ( that is an important part to remember that many people overlook), you go for the wider more profitable audience. How cost effective is it to desgin a client so 50 people can log on SL when you have 15,000 people who are having issues with the current design? The 50 (who may be fabulous techies, or just fabulous people in general) are going to bring SOOOO much to the table their needs are greater than the needs of the masses? It doesn't make good business sense.

It's a priority for me..

I put off joining SL for a year while waiting for linux support. I currently have a trial account and am very impressed with it, but worry about committing to something that would require me to reboot just to log on, or rely on an unsupported third-party apps like Cedega to get it working (and deal with problems every time SL is updated and my solution breaks).

In an enquiry to SL support on June 29th last year, I asked: "Are there any plans to offer a Linux client? I'd have thought that there'd be a decent intersection between the demographics of Linux users and those people who are interested in such an open-ended and scriptable world."

The reply I received was that there were no plans to offer Linux support and that I should check this forum for tips on getting SL to run under WineX/Cedega.

I think that intersection still exists, and with distributions like Ubuntu we're seeing more and more "casual" linux users who may be potential SL customers.

It's disappointing to see that there's still no linux client when SL apparently has a portable codebase - I don't think that arguments about support are valid, as games such as UT provide official linux clients with no support, or minimal "best effort" support.

In the meantime I have older boxes lying around that I could use as linux workstations while switching between that and my main PC to play SL - but it's not a viable long-term solution for me to leave my primary machine running windows for just one application.

A Mac OS X box would be a better solution, but I can't justify that at the moment either.

Well, there's been some progress recently...

(Sorry for the nasty-looking compression.)

There's still a ways to go, so I don't want to promise any sort of time table, but this IS being worked on.

"Well, there's been some progress recently..."

Thanks. Knowing that the Linux Client is really in the works makes me feel a lot better. I can keep working in SL for now and wait a bit, If I'm assured that I will not be locked into Microsofts horrendous vision of the future.

I'm still very new to SL but have had the idea (though i never quite achieved the ability) to create such an interactive 3D world very closely resembling this one. With the onset of a girlfriend my dreams of a job programming in c++ took a back seat. But that dream is not forgotten! Niether are the notes i had made. As a linux only user i'm very pleased to see this client is starting to take shape. I would also like to offer my assistance, where possible, in the developement of it, as well as SL in general.

I would love to hear more about the progress of the Linux client. Please keep us posted!

-SouLShadow

PS: You should check out some of the EFL (Enlightenment Foundation Libraries) (http://www.enlightenment.org). There may be something there to help speed up developement.

You're the man, icculus.

I've used SL under winex in the past, but now it seems SL 1.6.7 won't run even under winex 3.2.2. I did the whole "install-under-4.2-then-run-with.3.2" thing, and it first says it can't find DX9.0b, then it crashes.

Can't wait for the native release.

That's great news, and I'm very pleased to see it's really happening. Is this an under-the-table job, or is there still official support behind the idea of a Linux client?

Good luck, and I hope to enjoy the fruits of your labour soon.

The moment the Linux native client arrives, I will go back to a premium account and and re-purchase land. I haven't been able to use SL in a long time since I no longer use Windows and the latest versions do not work on WineX.

Oh my yes!

I would say those screenshots are well w00t-worthy.

I think I'd put a native Linux client over a functional OS X client in my priority since I have many more machines capable of running Linux well than Macs.

I think most everyone who uses linux would be willing to beta test. I just don't know hwo icculus handels test the various ports. I hope the testing gets done soon so we can have the client for download. But I know that the icculus is very good at porting programs and has a decent list, I was happy to hear that he was working on it. It was a name that I reconised.

Keep up the good work

I would think that it is best if everyone was running there prefered version. And make/request work arounds for there version so we can have them all colected in the first place. But I don't think there will be to much problems with it. I can just hope that we can get more offical word on how things are going. I can understand not giveing a release date, but it would be nice to know how it is going.

I'm a Linux user (and one who is rapidly absorbing the LSL documentation) and I would be ecstatic to see a Linux client. I mean, c'mon... the Metaverse shouldn't be Windows/Mac only.

...and I can at least say that running it under Slackware w/Dropline would be something I could definitely help with on the installation side since I'm one of the Dropline devs.
