It hasn't been in the past. They keep saying they want it, but nothing happens... It's officially lower priority than the WinXP and MacOS clients. I suspect it already exists in LL, and that it runs so smoothly (60FPS at 1600x1200) that they knew if they released it then everyone would complain about the Windows client.

i voted no. it's not a priority for ll. it will be for the user base when the client code is open sourced and we can port our own version of it.

Of course, it SHOULD be a priority, but LL don't think that way. If it's not going to make loads more money, there's no point.

Actually, they are going to make it a priority. I'm just trying to gauge the SL community's interest in having one, at the expense of getting other things done in SL. I for one think there are more important things to get done. Hank, LL already has cross platform code, porting SL to linux should be a fairly easy task, being that it is already availible on more than one architecture. (debugging another matter.) I'd like to see this, if only to end the regime of having to use WineX. -Adam _____________________

lol @ Siobhan.
Most games ive seen are never faster under linux then windows. (im not saying linux is bad, actually its pretty sweet! (prolly because usually its a port of a win game and also possibly driver support)) but they have to take into account what its users runs. most being Win @ mac. So id say its not a priority, however... I think they should support everything if it can be done without slowing down the programmers too much when its done.(updates) |

Of course, your milage may vary by what you have running... but on the same spec PCs, Unreal Tournament for instance (and 2003/2004) are a lot faster under Linux. Just harder to configure properly. _____________________

lol @ Siobhan. Just thought I'd mention... I hope you can run fast. I don't like being laughed at. _____________________

hehe.. I may not run fast, but I have other methods of transportation..
*gets in my autopilot jet* waits to push the button... I dont use linux, I was just refering to benchmarks in sites.. was always a percent or two behind, no biggie. I can see it being possible to be a few percent faster, but thats it. I seen you mention 60fps and for me that seems very high, that being said... My fps is between 1-20, lol.. I guess if your FPS already is 58 then 60 is'nt unrealistic. I would'nt expect more then a 10% improvement though.. "Quake3, Doom3 are also on this list of games that run faster under Linux." yeah, I think it depends how its configured, by how much? just a few percent id bet. *thinks.. should I or should'nt I laugh.. *decides I like my limbs attached ![]() |

Anything primarily openGL based will tend to run faster under Linux. The biggest lag is usually the fact lots of the time, you need to emulate, rather than run natively. Performance boons are usually because of things like better memory management, etc.

i wish they would hurry up with the linux client. The only reason I have XP on this mache is for SL. Give me a linux client and I can drop this poor excuse for a operating system like a bad habit.

Linux would be grand, I have had people actually /refuse/ to join SL because it didn't have a Linux client, I lost 3 referals that way o.o

I'd love to see a Linux client as well. I do run XP currently , but the main reason I don't install Linux to play around with is because I wouldn't be able to get on SL. Winex gave me some problems.

Up until yesterday I would have said the Linux client was a low priority, but the new installer doesn't work properly with WineX.

Up until yesterday I would have said the Linux client was a low priority, but the new installer doesn't work properly with WineX. Actually, this is a fairly long-standing bug. I poked Don Linden yesterday about it, and asked if he could offer a seperate .tgz file for linux users which basically just the collection of files needed for SL in one handy archive. Apparently Transgaming fixed this issue with Cedega, but since SL refuses to run under Cedega, it's a moot point. -Adam _____________________

It'd be nice to be able to just copy the files out of the installer and have it work, but it just doesn't happen that way. :/ Probably some registry crap or something.
I've been quietly complaining about a linux client before, but now because of that silly installer, I must complain audibly! Linux client, damnit! x_x I am NOT going out to buy windows just so I can play Second Life. I can't afford that. :/ .. It's certainly not LL's priority, but it certainly needs to be more prioritized than curving boxes. :/ |

Yes, It is a priority I believe, and should be one.
The Linux crowd is without a "high end" virtual world such as SL. Currently there are only a few open source virtual worlds that are Linux native. And very few, if not none, have a strong community or are as featurefull as Second Life. I appologize for the above words and their market speakish, but its true, being able to run natively on Linux would give SL not only alot more creative members, but also another steph forward in being the leading Virtual World. Just as the Mac versions have and are doing. ![]() _____________________

I personally can't stand windows, and that's why I haven't been playing. I recieved my account as a gift, and hate to see it going to waste.

Yay Linux, yes it is a priority, becuase people do use it. ^.^ You can't base userbase on sales because windows comes with every PC, MacOS X on every Mac, but Linux is a download away. I just hope it works with FreeBSD in Linux compatability mode.

I run SL with winex, but I voted NO to the poll. At first I wanted to vote yes, but then I though about all the poor souls who have to endure Windows to play ;_; I prefer LL to throw candy at the Win client, to put some joy in their hellish, nightmarish, tormenting computer experience... *hugs poor windows users*
