I like period clothing, such as long coats, poet shirts, leather breeches, cloaks and capes, etc.

On the other hand, I like unusual, fetish style clothes with leather straps, vinyl, latex, etc.

Then of course, great formal wear is always a plus.

A tweed jacket with suede elbow patches.

Think rumply English professor. Yummm!

Hey Lillie!

I was going to make exactly that!

My only hesitation is the awful way jackets go up the buttline like they're glued to the body! Yuch. If you have any tips on how to avoid that, let me know! Should it perhaps be a jacket top and skirt bottom?

My other question is, as a capitalist, "is there a market for men's clothes?" I hear people saying, "if you build it, they will come," but are men willing to pay enough? Perhaps others have tried the men's market and found men aren't willing to pay enough? Its just a question -- I'm not saying -- but perhaps the men here are the vocal minority and most men just don't care or aren't willing to pay what it would take to get nice clothes?

I'm certainly willing to take on some requests for people here, and then throw those designs up in my store. The proof would be in the pudding, so to speak.

If anyone is interested, IM me in world.

Thanks!

@Bizarre

I think you hit upon one of the major problems of SL clothes, particularly for men: the mesh. Among the frustrations I have are:

1. There is no mesh that allows a jacket or shirt to just fall straight down. In addition to tightening up at the waist, it also adopts the shape of the chest too faithfully.

2. You can't make a loose-sleeved jacket unless the shirt underneath is loose.

3. Can't make sagging shirts and loose shirts are too billowy.

A lot of fashion for men is loose and they can't be achieved in-world without looking bad.

I'm conceptualizing a proposal for LL to add some meshes and making it such that the changes to the system (server and client) will be minimal.

Mens clothing sucks in sl..
08-16-2006 15:46
I agree, you really have to look and then look again..hair is a joke. The link here to the shirts untucked are way Kewl! Shoes, there's another joke, it's all very limited or looks like the same stuff where ever you go.. biggest selection i find is Gangsta wear.. and not everyone wants to be Gangsta!!!! But at least they have a bigger selection.

Mens clothing... yes there are some of us willing to pay!!
08-16-2006 15:50
I will be the first inline for anything new and different in the mens clothes arena.. getting tired of wearing the two pair of jeans i found and the same couple of shirts... I end up most the time wearing swimming trunks due to the wild colors and patterns you can find, but not much is found in the shirt for something different.

I have found some beautiful suits, but it would be nice if there was a seperate layer for the tie. Or put the dress shirt on the undershirt layer, and put the tie on the shirt layer, and then have the jacket.

Prim shoes are a problem too. there are just not enought of them.

Prim beards.

If you want more than a "Don Johnson" or a little soul patch, you can't change your skin from the default. There are a couple of people working on this, but only one offering doesn't look like an icicle.

Shoes!

But mostly, we'd appreciate more of anything. There are many stores in world with four-plus floors of womens clothing (granted, some of it dreadful), and only a few places like this for men ... usually with the same vendors. :P

I've paid around 500L$ many times for an outfit, getting men to pay an appropriate price shouldn't be too much of an issue. lol

I make an outfit that the tie is a seperate layer, and I plan making a couple more with either a flexi tie, or tie on a seperate layer.

Those are leather slippers. Also the cut and fit tell me "leisure attire" or "pajamas" ... and they look really comfy.

Men's Clothing
08-16-2006 17:51
Has been quite some time since I have made anything in clothing. I should once again give this a go. With all the information being passed out here making things that seem to be wanted might take a bit of work but may just be what we need. I know I have a hard time also finding things I like to ware. I often am always now waring what seems to be the same old thing. I have made some okay mens things but then gave up really trying due to the selling of them. I just mostly ware what I make and just wait. I don't have everything I've made in vendors or online at 2 sites I do use. That may just have to change though here soon. If men really are looking for things to ware and I can help in anyway being a guy too. Then please I say lets have some fun and make some things we all want to have!

For inspiration. Its what I'd wear in RL, if I could afford it :p.

Only a matter of time for all those pics to be copied into SL, hon, now that you've provided the link for the menswear designers.

Hang in there.

As can be seen, guys get nothing as far as clothes. Shoes are a joke. And the few shoes you do find are either ugly or ugly and huge, look like clown shoes without any mods offered to size them right.

You usually find the same clothes in all men shops. I think most shop owners believe all men want and wear are t-shirts. You usually find big selections of these with dumb things written on them.

Men have to shop four and five times and more as much as women and we still have a hard time getting clothes. Also very rarely will you be able to buy two or three nice different items in one shop.

Any shop owner who was to put a large selection of nice men's clothes for sale would make a killing in sl. And I don't mean the same selection in 10 different colors either.

Search for LVS and Ravenlynn Templar -- both she and Jonquille Noir do some very nice stuff for guys -- not leather and straps, or studs and piercings. Normal clothes.

Ok, I know this thread isn't supposed to be for shameless plugs, but I CANNOT let this pass by.

Like many of you, I despise the lack of really exceptional clothing options for men in SL.

Few designers even do men's clothing and even less do it well. I have a few favorites, Vindi, Doc Eldritch, Storma Aramula, occassionally Barnesworth Anubis (nice pointy toed dress shoes), and a few items from FORM.

I'm a clothes horse in RL. I noticed this gaping maw immediately when I began playing SL a few months ago.

It was then that I decided to try to fill this niche a bit. My store just began selling a nice line (if I do say so myself) of men's suits, shirts (complete with prim cuffs and links) and ties worn just as Jake described above. Shirt on undershirt layer, tie on shirt layer, jacket on jacket layer. The idea is that all the components are fully interchangeable.

My partner (she designs furniture) and I haven't done much advertising beyond a places listing and a few classified postings in the forum. I've held off because there isn't much in the store right now, and I'm working to fill it up with many of the items suggested in this thread already in the works. In fact, I'll have some casual stuff out this week.

Stylish, fashionable, well-designed and sophisticated. That's my goal. I don't like to dress lik a professional wrestler, and it's nice to know there are other men in SL who want the same thing.

If any of you are curious, here's the link to the two classified ads in the forums with samples. Have a look for yourselves and be the judge.

Our new flagship store is in Guksu (138, 160, 22) and our satellite location is in Amsterdam (63, 162, 25)??.

So, I'm sorry to hijack this awesome thread with a plug for my store, but I just wanted to jump in and tell you all that help is on the way, and to say thanks to whomever started this thread. Great topic.

I guess I'm of the opinion if I want to play dress up I'll put on a female AV.

I do like nice prim shoes without alot of buckles and stuff.

Decent prim hair would be nice beside the dishevled rag top look that seems to be the rage

I would like to be able to adjust the textures on non-prim clothing the same as on a prim.

For those who are hijacking the thread with ads, please note that we are aware of the clothing ranges being offered.

We're looking for things outside that range.

If you're going to do a shameless plug ... impress us with something we haven't seen. Otherwise it does not contribute to the thread.

Please allow me a slight (but related) hijack in this thread. Here's a parallel question for male avatars seeking good clothing/accessories: Along with your answers about what you'd like to see in SL menswear, please consider posting how much you are willing to pay for these things, per item. What do you consider a fair price for a well-made shirt, jacket, pair of pants or suit, a nicely-formed pair of prim shoes, a stylish prim hairpiece? Your answer may or may not have a direct bearing on whether or not a SL content creator wants to take on the task of developing more interesting and diverse menswear. Thanks. :) (This is a great topic, by the way; all the suggestions are excellent.)

Hey, very sorry to have upset the applecart here. Someone asked specifically for things I was offering in the store. I thought perhaps since they were asking about something, that meant they were unaware something like that was available, and would appreciate knowing about it.

My mistake.

In an effort to get things back on track, here's a few things I'd like to see.

Shoes: Yes others have mentioned them here, but I'd like to put in a plug for something other than sneakers, snakeskin boots, and freakishly large shoes with spikes and chains errupting from the surface.

Pants: Nothing wrong with jeans. I wear plenty of them, but I wish someone would give me a little variety. And no, adding rips and tears to them doesn't count. Some slacks, khakis and cargo pants would be good for a start. Maybe some cords as well.

Sweaters: Someone mentioned plaid and I couldn't agree more. Maybe a nice sleaveless would be good. Give me options here. Plenty of turtlenecks out there already, btw.

Jackets: It's tough to make a good looking jacket, especially with the limitations of the jacket template. Yes, it's true you could put the bottom portion on a skirt, but they never look right. Makes your butt huge unless you modify your shape and save a version with little to no butt, hips, package etc. then change back to your normal shape when you take the jacket off. Even with that adjustment, they still never look exactly right. Regardless of these limitations, let's see something besides leather biker jackets. How about some sport coats, or a nice double-breasted jacket that you can wear with some of those casual pants I mentioned above? And not something I have to buy an entire suit to get either.

In the same vein, a nice overcoat would be good. Nothing wild or goth-looking. Just something stylish and sophisticated.

Oh, and my mistake for leaving out Beryl Greenacre in my earlier post. Very nice stuff as well

Yes!

I second this.

I have one shirt I love, the "Khaki Kramer" from Mischief. Unfortunately, that's the only one like it that I've seen.

Nice looking dress shirts, dressy, but slightly casual and *without* flames, wild patterns, etc. on them, would be nice. I don't want to look flashy, or like I should be riding around in a low rider, or going to a disco.

Personally, I'd like to see some in dark colors particularly. Black, charcol grey, etc.

Personally, I'd be willing to pay quite a bit to get decent mens stuff. I know the sales aren't as high for mens stuff, and it's a different sort of thing, but I'd be willing to pay $100-200 for a *good* shirt, etc.

I'd like to see more peoples' opinion on what Sl lacks in men clothes and what you would really like to see up for sale. Be a specific as possible. Colours, patterens, even a link to some photos would be good.

Think Steve Martin, John Cleese, Don Johnson, Sean Connery, Michael Douglas, Martin Sheen.

Cary Grant!

I think bodies and skins are needed as well as new clothes.
