Bad, the way they are doing it. What's up with a buy-out price of $10,000!?

I'm a bit concerned - I think LL should concentrate on making SL, the platform, better, not competing with residents.

I wonder what the plan is here.

The ad is subtitled "For the person who has everything this Holiday Season!"

What a wonderful gift! A recurring bill of $6000 ($2340+membership fees on 20 premium accounts as presented in the ad) every year I choose to keep my gift. You shouldn't have. Really.

Edited to include: Plus, I forgot about the "you have no rights" TOS the gift recipient will need to agree to if they intend to actually use their little patch of molasses^WParadise

They're probably doing this partly to gauge price elasticity for private island sales. If this auction gets bid up all the way to the Buy Now price of $10,000, you can be damn sure private islands prices through the SL website will be increased substantially in short order.

Hi guys! Please feel free to shoot me a mail at islandauction@lindenlab.com with any questions and concerns. I want to make sure everyone gets all of their questions answered. I'm getting ready to hunker down with a movie and some microwave popcorn, but I'll do my best to respond to all emails in a timely fashion.

Thanks!

Hi Crucial this is a one-time auction, and you are still indeed able to buy islands in the normal way.

Sorry for the confusion!

But you forgot the best part!!!

The happy recipient can't actually log in and use the island for anything.

Priceless. :D

Good, if the process is reigned in.

Bad, as it is now.

It's really that simple.

It appears the bulk of that $10k ($6k) is tied up in 120 hours of mysterious building and development.

120 hours which would be far better spent building a platform which does not so closely resemble a poor excuse for a beta build.

Judging strictly by the "let them eat flippant answers" scale, I'm guessing that Wilder is a Philip alt.

Desperate companies do desperate things.

Actually, it's a "New" linden:

I'm guessing it's a play for publicity. Project Entropia got a lot of PR play over selling one of their islands for mega bucks, I'm sure someone at LL just wants to do the same thing.

I doubt it's an evil plan to jack up the prices of island.

Um, I don't believe PE sold an island for megabucks - I believe a resident of PE auctioned an island, on PE's built in auction system, for megabucks. There is a subtle difference there.

Now let's see if any business girls decide to start auctioning SL islands on E-Bay...

They should white label SL and let us do this.

I think it's an excellent idea, in that it will be a wonderful learning experience for LL. Lets say 5 different real people use the "buy it now" option, and then start to have very serious problems like this or any other big, serious issues... (I was going to link to a bunch of other problems/crashes/downtime threads, but I hope you get the point...)
