Just About the Last Straw.... Inventory Loss

I've read about people losing sections of their inventory. Now it's happened to me. 57 textures used for Phobos Design clothing have disappeared from my inventory. And guess what, they seem to be gone from my file alt too.

Also, the only way I knew they were gone is because the empty subfolders remain. I wonder what else is gone from my inventory.

Not pleased is the understatement of the year.

Yes, I can recreate these files... Ferran and I will be spending the next several hours hunting down originals and reloading them. I guess I will be keeping a master file on my HD from now on, a bit of a pain when you work in a team and there is no easy backup feature.

I have to stop typing now before I say everything I'm thinking. Going to go cool off.

asset server has been really funky last couple of days

I too have noticed that the asset server seems to be suffering a major slowdown, takes it 3 minutes to load my texture folders.... haven't lost any items that I know of yet but then I clean inventory and expunge the trash every day...

I've been pouring through my inventory for the last week, making sure that everything from my store is updated and ready to be reset when I change builds. Much to my surprise, quite a lot of my boxed clothing items seem to be missing. Not in other folders, not in Lost and Found, not in Trash... just gone. It's a good thing I decided to update my inventory before it was time to delete everything on my land, or I'd be out a whole heap of money, and probably logging off for the last time.

If LL ever wants me to consider this anything other than a toy, they're going to have to start backing up their "Come to SL and make $$$ monetizing platform" bullshit statements with some restitution for lost items.

I think I've either lost or deleted several poseball and furniture sets in the past few weeks when I was owning land. BTA, I do need to sit down and clean up my inventory.

This stuff makes me nervous.

I woudln't mind a file export feature for my buildings, lest they get eaten by the Asset Monster.

This doesn't make me nervous. This is obvious that this is going to happen.

What makes me nervous is the lack of backup.

3. Take Responsbilities:
“You just lost six months of work and your customers are out thousands of dollars? Tough shit. But we appreciate you making content for us anyway.”
For a beta product, it’s okay to waive responsibilities in the event of a system failure. It’s beta, it happens. That’s part of the fun. It’s hip to stay in beta and charge people. But it still has to be called a beta. When you hit 1.0 and become a primetime product, make promises to the customer. If your users are creating the content for you, ensure them their content won’t be wiped out by some freak glitch, and that you can recover it. They’ll be less likely to jump ship when an alternative comes around.

Ah, for the moment, that's the killer isn't it?

No alternative.
Come the day though, things are going to have to change. And quickly.
Of course it would be sensible to do something now - and build up good will and confidence. But that means thinking ahead, something that doesn't seem to be on the agenda...

I'm very interested in how this turns out, Surreal.

A similar inventory loss could ruin me.

Please keep us updated.

Well customer service opens at 9am PST tomorrow, so Ferran and I are searching our HDs for the original textures. Unfortunately, the name of the final garment often changes before it goes out. I think we will find about 90% of them.

Textures are not nearly as big a deal, since we can import/export them. I have all of the objects we sell backed up on our file alt, but as demonstrated with the texture loss.. that's not much of a guarantee.

Even more than pissed (and I am very PISSED) I am sad. I don't play SL for money, I play it for all the enjoyment and personal pleasure the contacts and tools give me. But I'm starting to think LL just isn't up to the job. Somewhere out there some smart girls & boys are designing the next SL type environment -- any bets a couple of their designers are in SL learning from LL's mistakes?

Anyway, back to searching and cussing.

I had the same problem awhile back where just about every main folder {textures, objects, and such} were completely gone for two weeks, where they eventually came back. I doubt your items are gone, just taking a vacation.

Gee, my copy claims to be 1.7 :P

I'd thought I'd had this happen before, but this morning was the first time I was sure... because it showed up in my inventory when I opened a new inventory window, but when I clicked on it it turned into a different object. (!)

It's probably not "cost effective" for LL to have a reliable backup system, better asset management or a way to do local backups of inventory.

This shit is exactly the reason I will never invest in SL over an above what I spend to be entertained. In a nanosecond everything someone worked for could be gone with fuck-all that can be done about it.

You must be joking. They just put in place a new ToS that insures they never have to do this. Do you really think that wasn't on purpose?

But, to the point, if you want to avoid inventory loss, do what I do:

Create your own folders and move your stuff into them.

Seriously. I have not lost a SINGLE THING since I started doing this.... and I'm here to tell you, something is seriously wrong with their database that they can't keep their own freaking tables clean and maintain simple integrity.

Honestly, I do more than this -- I just stopped making content all together outside of that which I immediately sell to someone else (Closer Look ads, etc). This way, the originals are on my hard drive and I can maintain them and I don't have to worry about them being eaten by LL's negligence.

Did all of you already do a CLEAR CACHE to no avail?

I've had this prob several times before, and CLEAR CACHE bailed me out. :)

Best of hope.

Unfortunately, that doesn't prevent inventory loss. I'm extremely anal with my inventory. It's sorted and squeaky clean. I empty my trash daily. I file things into my own folders as soon as I take them into inventory. I still lost dozens of objects and clothing items.

Yup, cleared cache.. no joy.

And I'm highly organized too. Everything is in its own folder and subfolder. I have way too much stuff to do it any other way. I back up everything new by dropping it in a dated box and passing the box to my "file" alt too everytime we do a release too.

SUCKS!!!!!!

I'll second that... No idea why it's too hard to fetch the texture name for the download.

But we have ripply water comming!

Remember when you are doing your bulk upload back to SL that it will copy your RL info into the description field still. So you have to retype every file you upload as well. :)

And why we are on the topic, how come you have to type a unique name for every snapshot you take, which only goes into the descriptor, and then have to also "rename" the file by typing the same name a second time? I am sure most people just give up and live witht the huge folder of identical "snapshots."

I do that. I've still lost stuff from those folders.

And I create stuff to use, and then worry about polishing it up and giving it away. THe whole point to SL for me is to do stuff, making stuff is just a way to do stuff.

8 hours later I have located all the missing textures on Ferran's or my hard drive, re-uploaded them, re-named and filled the folders, then ULed the entire mess, one file at a time back to my HD.
