in edit mode, set the "hollow" % to the desired size.
Also select the shape of the hole.
It's all in the edit window. Learn each function and you will answer all your own questions.
If not, go to the "Ivory tower of primitives" and learn.

it tells you to hollow but doesn't teach you how to cut a hole in the center of the shape. if theres a station then please direct me to it

Just change the hollow shape under the hollow % option. I think that's what you mean. Maybe a picture of what you're trying to achieve?

Unfortunately, Stuart, there is no "cut" function in SL. The only way to get a hole in a prim is to use the "hollow" property, as the previous posters have said.

Luckily, you can get a still make a decent window using hollow. Make a large box prim and make it, say, 50% hollow. Then, flatten the box. If you flatten the box along the correct axis, you will have a prim that resembles a wall panel with a window in it. The window shape can be a rectabgle, circle, or triangle. With some creative wall-assembly techniques (utilizing more than one prim), you should be able to place the window anywhere in a wall that you wish.

If you can't figure out this simple thing by yourself, maybe you should waste your time on something else, like fishing or camping chairs.

That is fairly rude. Perhaps if you are not going to be constructive to the OP then maybe you should not waste everyone's time by posting anything. The OP asks a legitimate question as all of us have had and your response is don't bother us?

As for the OP, I think everyone else has responded quite well to your question so I will assume that you will experiment with that and have some fun

It's also been asked and answered at least a half dozen times in this building forum since I've been on SL.

The forum "Search" is your friend. :)

Spoon-fed answer, there are no boolen operations for prims (such as subtract one prim from another to make a hole in Prim A using the shape of Prim B).

Look for the Ivory Tower of Primatives and run through the tutorials.

Whether it's been asked or not is irrelevent; such rude behavior is entirely inappropriate and uncalled for and deserves an apology.

Agreed. Perhaps some people forget what it is like to be new to a forum, but please take note the person who asked the question about cutting prims that was answered so rudely, only joined the forum in July. Perhaps the person is unfamiliar with the search function on forums. Let's knock off the idiotic responses and take the extra 2 seconds to just either respond with an informative answer or not at all. Pretty simple.

How cool! I got flamed!

I have no respect for those who will not go through the process of playing with every tool in the toolbox in order to learn how to use them. Only after doing this do they deserve respect and an answer.

Those who come to the forum and ask questions before putting serious effort in self-learning are leaches sucking on the life blood of others who HAVE put in the effort to learn.

You will not get an apology. And no, I dont care.

Dearly Darling,

As a person who should adopt the entire Live Help staff and some other nice people who have taken the time to help me (and yes, I do go to the Ivory Tower) I say to you: "Shame on you! You are NOT on my Christmas card list!"

Ever Yours,

Then you shall recieve no apology from me as well for stating you are truely an idiot. By your statement, people should not ask questions then, they should just naturally just mess with every little thing in the world in order to figure it out. I would love to know how you got through life. Did your parents not teach you to speak? to walk? to use the bathroom?

I am truly impressed that you have gone through your entire life self taught with no assistance from anyone. That is amazing. You are such a gifted person. The other amazing thing is how you just simply know that the person did not already attempt "the process of playing with every tool in the toolbox"

In light of your expert opinions and views let me return the obvious lack of respect and decency and state that I hope people such as yourself find yourselves in situations that require you to have knowledge of a subject and no one is available to assist you. Unfortunately, there is just far too many nice people out there so that situation probably will never happen to you as someone would step up to assist you, probably without requiring you to even ask.

Well, enough time has been wasted on such a simple person as yourself, so this shall be my last response to you as I am sure I am wasting my time trying to explain any sort of ethical behavior. Have a nice life

If one doesn't care, why bother answering questions here? There are so many other self glorifying and far more entertaining stunts to be pulled elsewhere.

You have obviously forgotten what it was like to be a newbie.

To the OP: please don't take this person as an example of an SL resident. Yes, you may want to use the search feature to see if you can find what you're looking for, but don't be afraid to ask questions. Also, for people like this jerk, the Ignore function is your friend.

Well here I am again as I was bored and figured, you know, maybe I should just take a quick look in the history of the forum here. I find it terribly funny that if you do a history on Pratyeka Muromachi's forum post's it is very interesting how they are anti-helpful to the OP, whereas I see posts asking questions and thanking people for thier help. Amazing, I guess I was wrong. here I thought they were all knowing and self taught, yet here we are looking at a nice history of questions. Oh wait! What's this? Could this be a post just this past July, where our friend, Pratyeka Muromachi, is asking the following:

"rocking boat script
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is there a script out there that would make a non-physical boat gently rock with the waves? All I need is random rocking script, preferably adjustable, up-down and roll (jumping rock and roll? lol...)

I would need full perms on this script.
Thanks in advance."

Seen @ /54/ab/118116/1.html

Amazing how this post resulted in 2 pages of helpful tidbits. But then again, I am sure that they went ahead and searched every bit of info on scripting before posting that question. What was it again that they said about playing with every tool in the toolbox before asking a question? Then I am sure they developed every possible type of script before posing that question. LOL.
Oh wait, another quote within the same post " thank you both for clarifying this for me, I'm not proficient in scripting as you may have guessed."

It's a legitimate question

Some of us have used intense 3D modeling software and I for one when I started didn't know how basic the building tools where here. I too wanted to know this information and also why when linking together prims it did not combine to create one new prim, instead of several prims just linked to together..Would be a wonderful day if that ever happened.

So thank you all for helping this person out... and I believe the "know it all builder" is hanging his head down in shame signing up for an alt avie to ask his next question for the scripting group... If he isn't maybe he should be.

Come on people lighten up.

Indeed. In light of this thread, and in full first-hand knowledge that building in SL is not actually as straightforward as some like to make out, I am working on a "basic building guide" to add to the many other help guides at Stratics.

Well, if anybody is still paying attention to the original intent of this post, I was playing around last night and found out that you can make windows with textures. I happened to have a texture in my inventory that had a wall with a square window in it and sure enough, you can see through it. Also you can make one side of an object colored and one side transparent, so for example I put a dome on top of my house, and the interieor was transparent allowing me to see out but the outside of the dome was colored not allowing others to see in. Experiment, oh and ignore the asshats.
