I was just thinking of builds that I'd love to see inworld and wondered what your list would be?

I would like to see:

Pharos Lighthouse

Angkor Wat

LAX Control Tower (old)

Juro,

I already commissioned Pharos Lighthouse back in December 2004. It was built on Pharos Island in the game in Ross, a sim that had just been born then, by SuLuMor Romulus. It has been in the game for months and hundreds of people have visited it.

I had the idea of putting Pharos Lighthouse in the game last year, when I tried to think of a word for a new mall that would connote "beacon" and started looking at the Internet thesaurus, etc. And after one false start with one architect, who just didn't deliver I found SuLuMor who did a really great job with her own designed textures.

I guess you never visited this property. It's a merchant tower, with floors to rent, and you can also get stores to rent along the waterfront. It looks sort of Greek, with the barren earth and a few eucalyptic trees and an ampitheater where we have events like the town hall.

I asked that it be adapted for Second Life. The first thing you would have to do, I said, was create "fly-in-ability" -- not those tiny, narrow windows designed in the ancient days when I guess they had to think about how to keep weather out without central heating.

So our Pharos has large doorways and landing pads suitable for the avian creatures we are LOL. There are other adaptations mainly to make teleporters work, etc. It has a lighthouse beam at the top -- the view from there is really awesome! Come and see the sunrise there some day!

Next, I commissioned the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, another "wonder of the world". Again, the idea was to have these "Wonders of the World" be reference points for inspiration, but not have some slavish RL copy because you need the adaptation for Second Life. Again, there was the issue of how to land when you fly, and how to have "flyinability" and easy exit.

Pharos Lighthouse is in Ross on Pharos Island, about 200 m from the Ross Telehub, and Hanging Gardens of Babylon is in the adjacent sim of Refugio on the mountain there. Without a really tall mountain (like you get in the older sims), well, it is adapted. But I am still very pleased how it turns out, and a lot of people have enjoyed hanging out there and shopping. There's a new club as well.

Next on my list for my company Seven Wonders is the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. That looks like an easy one -- but again, the windows are so tiny. For now, I had to scrap this idea just because I couldn't find a reliable architect to follow through on it. But I haven't given up this dream, or the dream to do some of the other "wonders" that would require hiring a sculptor, I guess.

Juro, it sort of pains me that you never bothered to notice things like this wonderful tower created by SuLuMor, even when it was posted, but that's because like a lot of people, you just prefer to spout off against me in the forums and don't bother to see what I accomplish in the game -- with of course the enormous help of a talented and dedicated architect like SuLuMor who was able to take my sketchy idea and bring it to life.

P.S. There's a neighbour on the sim with a bunch of alts who's been bitching against me in the forums in a variety of threads with his different alts, one of which lambasts me for having "big white floating signs". Guilty as charged! I tend to have to try to rent out my architectural wonders to cover my tier, rather than to just perch them on my free 4096s LOL. So yeah, it gets a little colourful and cluttery around my mall but we have a lot of fun and people like to come there.

Very cool. I didn't realize the tower was based off of the Phobos Lighthouse. I will definately go check it out along with the Hanging Gardens.

I've long thought it would be cool do do the 7 Wonders builds, but I lack the prims and time - so I'm glad someone else picked up 2 of them! :)

I don't want to turn this into a flame fest, but my not noticing your recreation of the Phobos Lighthouse has nothing to do with you and I sparring on the forums. I do not know all of your accomplishments inworld - that I guess you could say I'm 'guilty' of. It's not a matter of 'bothering' to see what you've done, its strictly a factor of limited inworld time.

Pharos, not Phobos -- Pharos is something the ancients created, Phobos is something I think Hank Ramos created but closed LOL.

Well, the point isn't to have a flame fest, the point is to make a sharp remark about people who dump on me all the time but don't even spend five minutes to visit me.

For example Eggy Lippman visited me at this mall, but I doubt he even noticed it as a replica of one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

In fact, I'm not alone among educated people who can't exactly rattle off every single Wonder of the World -- many people can manage like 5 and it's one or two they get stumped on.

You don't really need that many prims.

That is not the LAX control tower but a restaurant.

Talk about a slip, huh? ;) You are correct, sorry about that.

Granted, I haven't spent much time with you in-world, but we've had a couple of good chats via IM. I respect what you're trying to do - but as for the sharp comments on the forums, you know my view on that.

Ha! Ha! Have you *seen* my builds?? ;)

I'm sure you could do it with little prims, but I like my prims - with some good textures, the look is very convincing. Personally, I'm not willing to sacrifice the look to save a few prims.

Soooooo... Prokofy, what builds would *you* like to see?

Gah. Two mistakes in one post!

Pituca is right. I found some more info from the LAX site:

"Built in 1961 as a symbol of futuristic transportation at LAX, the Theme Building sits in the heart of the airport passenger terminals. Its four parabolic arches rise 135 feet above the ground over a central core that contains a cantilever restaurant and observation deck, both with panoramic views of the airport and surrounding communities."

Well, if we call it the Liberty City control tower then we're safe.

There's a website here that shows the Taj Mahal in great detail. That could be a lovely build.

Having lived within striking distance of the House on the Rock for most of my life, I urge the community to not reproduce the indescribable horror of that abomination. Architecturally, the exterior is very interesting. However, the shear mass of the crap/kitsch contained within threatens to tear a hole in the space-time continuum.

Edit: Let me clarify. The building itself is breathtaking. The architect managed to produce something which bridges the fluid grandeur of the natural world and the brutal geometry of the artifical. The infinity room (http://www.atpm.com/7.10/house-on-the-rock/images/infinity.jpg) is particularly amazing. However, the collections inside detract from the architectural merit of the house.

I am sorta scared to open my mouth, these might exist and I might get flamed for suggesting the idea

I was thinking about the arch in St. Louis, the statue of liberty naturaly. humm

London Bridge
Golden Gate Bridge
My house in detail- no special house or anything but would be fun to have a 3D version :P
Mt. Rushmore (hehe I swear I dont have an ego problem, but my face better be there!)

I would say the sphynx, and pyramids- but I have made those and seen others around
there are many being left out because I already know of thier existance. Perhaps we should start a sister thread about great buildings that already exist and where you could find them! This will prevent further hijacking from angry builders/owners who aren't getting the notice there build deserves.

For the record he is right. The "stuff" they have inside is like the Mad Hatter mated with a pack rat. Just "stuff" everywhere and not even valuable "stuff", just "stuff" that brings back memories for people, specially the older ones.

Also the self playing musical instruments all over the place that he seems to have a fetish for or the fact that they are severly off-tune.

Anyone that read "American Gods"....yes it is worse then the book describes in it's oddness.

PS replace "stuff" with yuor favorite colorful wording. *can't use them at work*

A couple of ideas
05-12-2005 19:25
Obviously, I'm a greenhorn, but I wonder if these may exist in SL...

Is there is a Bates Motel in SL?

How about the hotel and boat house in Key largo?

I have seen a large gorilla, but what about the big walled-in compound as seen in the original King Kong?

Has anyone built Nemo's sub from the sixties version of 20,000 leagues under the sea?

Graceland? The little house on the prarie?

Hmmm, I wonder how prims it would require to do Superman's crystal caverns?

I'm warming up now -- no shame --- recalling the bumper stickers that said "See Rock City". I'll bet this would bring to mind different images depending on age and regional background.

Okay, sitting back down... sorry :o

I was thinking about the arch in St. Louis,

Sinclair Valen built the arch back in 2003 for the Americana Project in the Blue sim. Unfortunatly Americana folded in October 2003. We held Americana Redux over the 4th of July weekend last year in Lime and Plum.

Look for it this year in June and July when we will have Americana Redux 2005 and all those builds will be brought to life again including Sinclairs arch.

Watch the Forums for more updates.

There's a poor man's arch in Grignano that I made... looks kinda neat, it towers over all of my bits of land. :)

As for what I'd like to see in SL... arcologies or other similar mega-structures.

A proper one would probably take 4 sims, building at the corners.

What would I like to see? I have a punk-like spirit which is desperate to make realistic housing as a comment on everyone having a mansion.

If I ever get/win a private island I promise to model a council estate of some sort ;)

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Some sort of Trantorian structure rising from the sea.

In another direction, I'd like to see someone do some genuine urban wastelands.

Tried the Sphynx... * sigh*
05-13-2005 08:11
I did try to build the Sphynx, but alas my building skills could not do it nearly the justice it deserved. After begging several times ..... Cutter finally agreed and we took it down, much to my delight. To me it was so bad I could hardly stand looking at it tho a valiant effort . rofl...... We were using it as a house.....
