i have some art i would like to sell, i have set the permissions as: modify: no copy: yes resell/give away: no
I'm assuming (as im new) that this means someone can drop however many copies they like but cannot change the item or resell it.
is that correct?

From: someone The permissions track four primary categories for each object - owner, group, everyone else, and next owner. Each category has its own set of permissions. I'm doing some building, and I just noticed that the "Group" field on the "General" tab of the object editor hold the name of whatever group tag I happened to be wearing when I created the object. I don't think that's what I want. But I can't figure out if it matters or not. The above text, quoted from the first post in this thread, says that each category has its own permissions. All I see in the "General" tab is one set of controls f or "next owner can" and so on. What rights do the people in the group marked for the "Group:" field of the "General" tab have over the objects I have created? How do I know if they're different than my own rights, or the rights of the creator of the object?

Right of First Sale ===================
The right of first sale applies when an item is transferred without next owner copy. Since you are allowed to specify no derivative works by specifying next owner cannot modify, this right is interpreted as next owner can always transfer that single instance of the item to anyone else. Hmmm, there's a slight problem here. I want to sell items which are updatable but I don't want people to make derivative works from them. Specifically I don't want someone adding their own (possibly malicious) scripts and selling them on. In order to update an item either manually or by script, you need to have modify permisson on that item, so I am forced to set the item modify. I don't want it copiable (I sell a copiable version for those that want it at a higher price). Therefore I have no choice but to set it mod/no copy/trans. The upshot of this is that anyone with a mind to can buy the object, insert a malicious script into it and sell it on. Of course, the object still has my name as creator so guess who is likely to get the blame? Especially if the malicious script deletes itself after performing its task. The sad thing is that in protecting the right of the consumer, LL are making it impossible for me to both protect my work and give the consumer the best product available. Ever sadder, it would be so simple to get around without affecting consumers rights. If the 'mod' permission is meant for specifying 'No derivative works' then make it so we can use scripts to update an item without mod permission. The mechanism is already there whereby a PIN number has to be negotiated so you can't just spam no mod objects with scripts, so why do you require mod permission to use it ? Max Duesenburg

First Quarter: 2007 (whatever release we are on)
1: in what order do you set permissions? ie: the 'in world/editing' permissions list is different than the 'in inventory/properties' permissions list. which overrides the other?
2: what parts/contents of an object affect the permissions of the entire object? textures; scripts, sounds, poses/animations, etc.
ie: i was making a couch and put in a non-mod pose in the pose ball. after taking the couch into my inventory to save for later... i could no longer edit my own couch! the whole thing was set to no-mod.
note: placing a no-transfer item in an object that is 'no copy/no mod/yes transfer' seems to make the supposedly-impossible 'no nothin' permissions object.
3: when i make a box, i set a price on it, and tell it to 'sell contents.' when the box is in inventory and i check permissions... 'sell contents' does not exist. in this case, do i want to check 'original' or 'copy'? (or should i just NEVER touch in-inventory properties? they seem to be designed to create havok.)
4: do objects and item types have default permissions, and could we get a list of those? last night i tried giving away some scripts i packaged up, but they were set to no copy (and they were self-deleting scripts!).
5: what does the 'anyone can copy' checkbox do to permissions?
sorry to clutter up your thread here, but i believe these details can be important. thank you.

Perhaps someone could explain what do use in this real life (SL?) senario, because I am finding these permissions more than complicated!
I am building furniture to sell. I want people to be able to buy it, but I don't want them to be able to edit/modify it. Also, if they buy 1 chair I want them to only get one chair, not be able to copy it half a dozen times. If they want 6 chairs they need to buy 6. I am happy if they want to re-sell it at a later date, but then they will no longer own it, I don't want them to be able to sell multiple copies.
So what would the permissions for this senario be?
NO: next owner modify NO: next owner copy YES: next owner transfer
Is that it? Does that meet all my requirements? Thanks!

I am not sure if I am glitching or if this is intended:
I set an object I created (with or without scripts I created) to no mod, no copy and automatically it makes itself transferrable with no way to change it, only when I allow it to be copy can I uncheck the Resell/Give Away option. Seems to be an either or scenario.
Is this intended? Was something changed? I have objects made by other people that are completely locked in all regards. Additionally, my objects contain nothing I did not make myself when this occurs so I am not sure what I am doing wrong, there are some objects (although very rarely) that I would like to completely lock down when I give it to someone, but so far I have not managed to be able to make this happen. Any suggestions?

This thread is out of date and misleading. I think it's a valuable resource and as such should be deleted and replaced and restickied with a correct permissions run down. Pretty please

Who can help? Usually this is caused by a temporary problem in SL. Try again later; I bet the problem will go away. It's usually caused when either of the following are true: a) your client can no longer communicate with the server -- eventually your minimap will turn pink. Re-logging fixes this. b) there are problems with the "asset servers" -- the distributed databases that hold all the info about avs, objects, and inventories. Time usually fixes this.

I need help please
08-28-2007 18:35
I would like to sell items I made but need to know how to make them no copy and no transfer. I have seen items, many items that have no permissions at all but every time I uncheck copy to make it no copy, it automatically checks, then ghosts transfer.
Can anyone tell me how to make my items no copy AND no transfer together please?

How do I include a readable non-editable notecard?
09-04-2007 20:21
I am selling an object with a notecard that has certain information on it. The object is no copy/no modify, but if I forbid modify on the notecard, I am afraid that it will become unreadable. Is this the case? If so, how do I make sure that if the object is given or resold, the notecard will still have the same contents?

Could you clarify the issue with permissions based on texture UUID? If I have a texture UUID, do permissions apply at all when using llSetTexture() to apply it to an object?

Updates on Perms?
10-22-2007 17:14
* You want to sell someone a single motorcycle that they can change the shape and color, but cannot examine or modify the script:
bike - YES: next owner modify NO: next owner copy YES: next owner transfer
scripts - NO: next owner modify NO: next owner copy YES: next owner transfer --- This no longer seems to be the case, when the next person buys it the perms seem to be copied from the contents... It becomes No copy, no modify, transfer ok. Is this correct?

Help with permissions for a group.
11-24-2007 04:43
I am working with a guitar maker.
The goal is to create a guitar dispenser on our group land that will dispense a playable guitar to any members of the group, but no one else. And the dispensed guitars should be "no copy - no mod - no trans.
Is this possible?
Or, is it possible for the guitar maker to sell me a single guitar with permissions "Copy Ok - No Modify - No Trans" that I can rezz on the land, and have only members of my group be able to play it?
I had an ATV maker sell me a group model ATV. I can rezz as many as I like on our group owned land and only group members are able to ride it. I'm hoping to have these guitars be the same, but with the play function, rather than the ride function.

ok now this one is a tricky question...
11-25-2007 00:25
Me and a buddy built a Pool & Hottub.. Actually he built the Pool structure & textures, and I built and scripted the Water, Tub Controls & FX.. the Water and Pool cant be linked b/c: - the water is phantom and the pool is not. - the water was made by me and the structure made by him the Water and Tub Controls cant be linked b/c: - for some reason it kills the scripts for the Water So my parts consist of (made by me): Water (phantom) -- Main Water Prim ---- Scripts ---- Sounds ---- Rezz-able objects (phantom) -- Child Prims ---- Scripts Controls & FX -- Buttons ---- Scripts -- Jets ---- Scripts And my buddys parts are: Pool --Seats ----Scripts So how should we set the Perms on all the parts? Scripts included.. also if anyone any suguestions as to the best way we can sell his Pool & my Water and Tub Controls as a complete item and spit profits it would be great

Textures
11-27-2007 16:48
For ages now Professional texturers in Second Life have had Copyright Infringement problems being confused with texture and object permissions..Is there not a way to work on the permissions values to include..or exclude textures on objects somehow?
I admit even myself that at one time I thought that Texture Professionals issue in Second Life concerning texture copyright was with the linden lab object permission system rather than with people stealing textures.
Knowing better now..it really seems as if it would help all concerned..creators and customers alike to implement some type of Texture protection option either in the object permission window and /or in the estate management system.
Disable snapshots in sims where snapshots are a danger..or something?

I just made and uploaded three of my own shirts.
I cannot uncheck the "Next owner can....resell" box, because it is grayed out.
I do not want the next owner to resell or give away. Is this a problem just today? I didn't notice it when I uploaded yesterday.

Check the radio buttons at the top of your "General" editing menu for the object. If you have been editing individual prims or selected textures, so that one of those buttons is checked, the areas at the bottom of that menu -- including the "Next Owner Can ... Resell" box, will be grayed out.

These shirts aren't prims at all - just regular targa files for basic clothing, so the "edit" function just gets you the "Appearance" box, which has no radio buttons to check over.

Oh, I see what you mean.... the boxes in the Inventory Item Properties panel, right? As far as I can see by poking around in my own inventory, those are greyed out when you aren't listed as the owner of the item or if the creator hasn't given you resell rights. Since you are both the creator and owner, the only other possibility I can think of is that you are using a texture that you don't have full c/m/t permissions for. Check that.

Texture Permissions ???
07-08-2008 20:24
I can't seem to get textures to work right unless I sell them with full perms. They may end up unusable, can only be applied by dragging from inventory, etc. I'm selling them "sell contents" from prims with the same permissions. What permissions do I need on them to get them to work properly for the next owner without them being able to edit or sell them? Or is that even possible?
