LOL thanks for not naming me Fran. I hadn't been in sl for a few weeks and when i read the above posts I thought I remembered the dialog message being different than the standard, which it isn't.

Sorry if I helped with the confusion here..

I think I have figured out the source of your confusion. There is a Hug attachment that does say, "X would like to hug you, choose [Yes] to hug." or something similar. But it says it outloud, broadcast. The dialogue itself does not change.

This is interesting, as it is a subtle, psychological thing. People see someone typing and then they see the text come up "/hug name." Their eyes are focused on that area of the screen, and they see the broadcast from the attachment say, "X would like to hug you, choose [Yes] to hug." This causes them to look up to the right and click "Yes" without even reading the dialogue. They associate the broadcast message with the contents of the permissions dialogue.

Very interesting. =)

Aru got it right.

If you check, the hug attachment uses llInstantMessage to notify that "X would like to hug you. Press [Yes] to accept".

At that moment, it sends the llRequestPermission command, which opens the usual "This object would like to Animate your avatar [Yes] [No]".

People just automaticly see the chat first, the dialog second, and assicoate the yes/no with the llInstantMessage that was initialy sent, and accept.

Welcome to the realm of psycology in software design! o.O

Doh!

Very clever. I have to hold my hands up to falling for that as well then!

wow. thats pretty unbeliveable. Im actually the owner of the attachment, dont know why i chose to describe it as the opposite, but i was operating on false information. well.. now that this episode of mass hysteria has come to its irritating finale. thanks all of you for the thoughts. sorry to waste your time :D

I honestly can't see a way to do this. I have one of the "hug attachments" and after reading this thread it doesn't seem possible for the attachment to work the way it does, and yet it works (very well). Perhaps the creator of this would like to shed some light?? (unless you want to keep your secret, hehe).

In the simplest of terms they use two scripts, one for hugger and one for the hugee.
The main script (the hugger) communicates via linked messages with teh hugee script which has teh responsibility of handling the 'other' AV.

Look here for details.

Hmm, in what way did I not get the point? The question was how do they work which I think I answered....

The post was about a hug animator that doesn't display the normal "This object would like to animate your avatar" popup, but a custom one. The poster wanted to know how _that_ was done, not how a general hug works...

hmmm, you are correct, I seem to have replied to a different thread to the one that I thought I was in. I'll blame it on way too many late nights and a bit of Newgyism.
