I know there are some threads already over in resident answers, but I mostly live here in the scripting forum. I have learned so much from all of you, and even though I knew it was coming, I'm having some trouble adjusting to the blog announcement today about the forum's demise.

Please reassure me that when they close this forum down, you will at least give the new place a try. I don't want to lose your expertise, your humor, your sense of community, your willingness to share what you know, your help and advice. Some of you have threatened to leave when this forum is gone. I so hope you don't.

I want to say a bunch of other mushy stuff but I guess that's enough. Just don't go away, okay?

Yeah, I can get all mushy too. This forum and the other Content Creation forums have been an amazing community for me, and I hope I have managed in some small way to help make them and amazing resource for others. I cannot see much to recommend the new system, so I'm probably simply going to disappear as they pull the plug here next week. I hope to see you in world.

Even though I'm a dunce scripter, I've avidly read Scripting Tips and used the Script Library just about every day. I can't relate how much I've learned - starting from less than zero, the helpful scripters in the forum have helped me to learn and grow, until now I'm at least up to dunce level ;-D

I'm extremely grateful to everyone who posted here - both questions and answers.

That's why I posted. I don't like the software either, but it is the people that matter. If everyone disappears, we've lost something very special. It's like being forced to live in a house you don't like. It's really ugly, but it's way better with your friends there.

I'm still hurting from when a Linden staffer deleted the entire Scripting Tips forum. All of Wednesday Grimm's hilarious sarcasm and wit gone.

I don't post much here in the Scripting forum anymore because there are too many people better able to answer questions quickly now.

Ah well, things change.

LL has done a disservice to the very community that helps SL be more than a collection of prim sculptures.

I've posted to this forum maybe three times in my three years in SL, subscribing to the old adage "keep your mouth shut and your ears sharp"

I just wanted to say how much I've appreciated all the amazing scripters here who made learning LSL an enjoyable exercise. Thanks to all the hackers and bashers that really pushed the language to see what it could do. From the hints and tips, to the slap-head-and-groan typos and errors found, and for the constant generosity and wonderful exchanges, I cannot say enough.

Thank you

I feel the same. Some questions have been very creative and opened new perspectives to me.

I don't use to comment on blogs but I did on that one, because they need to realize that shutting down Content Creations forums is shooting at their own feet.

I understand the sentiment, but I really REALLY cannot stand that software. Every time I go there to use it, it finds new and exciting ways to piss me off. So, it's "give it a try" and quit SL altogether, or avoid it and at least stick around in-world.

Seems like a simple decision for me.

I'm listed in the LSL Mentors page on the Wiki, and people are more than welcome to ping me in-world for assistance, or join the Scripters of Second Life or Advanced Scripters of Second Life groups in which I still participate and ask questions.

I'm sure there will be some good people around at the new place who can stomach it better than I can, so you'll still be able to get good help. Void I know will be there; can't get much better help, as far as I am concerned.

absent several improvements to the basic structure I wont be moving over there... there's just no point.

I literally can't do what I do here, over there...

perhaps I'll quit doing it altogether, perhaps I'll find a different venue... depends on how strong the urge is.

I've posted there as to some of the basic functionality missing... you can see it at this link https://blogs.secondlife.com/message/77107#77107

Of all the websites I have visited, of all the forums I am a member, and of all the blogs I have posted on, LL's use of jive isn't the best but it isn't the worst either.

It would be petty of me to think that I am so special as to not "bother" with a new forum software. Nothing ever stays the same!

I'll be around in the new forums. :-)

I too have found this forum to be a great resource with plenty of savvy and wit.

As for myself, I think I will migrate to the SLU forum, as their scripting subforum is quite active, and I see several of the 'names' here over there as well.

I wish you all well,

Regards

I too hope we all can find a new home for Scripting Tips. I have benefited and learned so much about scripting with the help of people here, it has truly been an enjoyable learning experience.

For anyone who doesn't have it, here is the URL to the SLU Scripting Forum.

I don't post much here but I am very grateful to the many scripters for generously sharing their expertise and knowledge to the community at large. You've taught me so much and I sincerely thank you all :)

Wow Void, I read that post, and could not agree more. I think their biggest mistake was to replace forum software with blog software as you pointed out. I can understand LL's need to dump vBulletin because of the issues they pointed out in the blog post about the change, but isn't there newer, more advanced forum software out there that they could use?

Whereas I don't post here much, and very rarely in building tips and texturing tips, the help and assistance I've received has been second to none and I thank every one of you, not least because search works here and I can find a plethora of information from past discussions.

Johan, this version of vBulletin is SIX YEARS old. Yep, that's right. It hasn't received a core update in SIX YEARS.

The current version of vBulletin alone is LIGHT YEARS ahead in terms of security and features as this one, and there is a migration path!

The problems with vBulletin aren't technical in nature, no matter how badly LL wants to spin it. They are POLITICAL.

I'm going to say that I appreciate that you applied that to yourself, but it looks as if you're accusing everyone else here of the exact pettiness you exempted yourself from...

maybe I read that wrong, if so I apologize in advance, but to me it hurts... I do not believe there is a single person posting in this thread that thinks that way, and it trivializes every valid concern and complaint that has been expressed by all the people that come here, whether to get help, receive it, or both. It has the taste of attacking this entire community.

My immediate reaction to that, if I were less self aware, would be to direct every iota of barely contained rage over LL's behavior at you as an convenient target. I am self aware. You have the benefit of doubt from me. I feel any other response would demean not only me, and the spirit of this thread, but the community.

==========

To all those who've given help here, received help here, or even just stopped by to read.... Thank You. I can only hope that you pass the same spirit along, in whatever way you can, wherever you might end up

and yes, for the record, I'll still be finishing up the run... I'm used to being one of the last people out the door... old habit.

Being spooked by what Ann OToole posted about the demise of the XStreet forums, is there a way for us to archive the scripting tips here? Without individually opening and copying every post? I'd be flat-out lost without that archive.

I'm not real hopeful, but maybe some genius out there knows how to run an external script to grab most of the stuff. Or at least a chunk of it.

I spent part of today manually doing cut and paste from threads that I have bookmarked over the past three years. It's slow and tedious work, but I can't think of an easier way to do it right now. Besides, I need some mind-numbing exercise.

If there's a reliable way to grab the archives and store them on a 3rd party server somewhere, that would be great. I do not trust LL to port them over properly to the blogorum, and I am not sanguine about our ability to search them even if they DO move them over. That's beyond my meager skills, however.

It is good to back up important things always. The closing here does not change this. it is always a good thing to do. What Ann said is not true, Xstreet archive is still there.

unfortunately with the brokenness of the search functions here it's very difficult to even find many of the posts to archive them... one hopes that the final exposure to google will make that a realistically possible goal.

Anne may be a conspiracy yonk, and given to melodrama, but her advice in this isn't entirely unsound...

I urge everyone to backup any private messages, or account linked information, as that will very likely be locked out. It also wouldn't hurt to scan your own posts for tidbits of code that you'd hate to forget or lose access to, as they may end up being harder to find later.

I would NOT suggest archiving library scripts, ESPECIALLY not ones with license requirements, although I do have a project underway to get all of those ported to the wiki if we can guarantee licensing compatibility, and they'll be credited in full to their writers under whatever license is MOST restrictively compatible with the ToS regarding forum content.

any of my individual script contributions that don't have a clear attached license statement are hereby donated to the public domain under the Creative Commons CC0 license... do whatever you want with them. the rest should all already be mirrored via my user page on the LSL_Portal.

I suggest these things not only because stupid things like account blanking and corrupted indexes might happen, but also there is noise being generated about privacy of comments that may cause LL to NOT expose the archives to google search, or possibly shutter them altogether for legal concerns... it's only an itch right now, but it's better to be prepared.

besides, it gives me something solid to do while I'm here, because if I don't focus on something else technical, monotonous, and time consuming I'll probably ruin my keyboard with tears

I know. I really do know. I've been through this before somewhere else and it's so hard.

Void, I was secretly hoping you'd know how to get the posts. I had you in mind when I asked, but I suppose it's too much work, or can't be done, or we're all too stunned to deal with it. I'm glad the archive will probably be somewhere though, even if it isn't easily searchable. Maybe eventually it will be.

That's what I had in mind. Like I said, I've been through this before. When a particular forum I was working in heard that all the files would be deleted from the library, a bunch of us banded together and over a period of three days we downloaded every single file, hundreds of megs of stuff -- this was many, many years ago and we could do that because we were all on really fast, smokin' 56K dialup. I consolidated all the material onto a CD and sent it on to a designated librarian. I think there are enough of us to pull this off if we had someone smarter than I am who could figure out how to pull all the posts.
