Hacking the cloud texture?

I was looking through viewerart.ini but there doesn't seem to be any entry for the cloud texture. Does anyone have any idea on how to go about this?
I don't suppose LL was clueful enough to make it an estate setting?
Within a few months I'm going to be part of a team making an educational movie where one of the requirements was specifically stated as changing the cloud texture to something darker and more smokey... :(

The cloud texture used in the SL sky is generated, I think. And no, there's nothing in the Estate menu that allows changing / disabling clouds :(

<shameless plug>BTW did you know I make a machine that can change the weather, make clouds (white to dark), rain, snow, thunder, meteorite falls, etc... ?</shameless plug>

Like these =v ?

Hmm, it ain't pretty, but you could maybe replace the cloud texture with a streaming video (or just a single-frame image put into the media URL of course)... That's about all that comes to mind for me.

There's no key nor texture file for the clouds, as Eggy says, so I can't think of a way to do that :(

Yeah, I thought about particles but if we could use the normal clouds it would be a lot better.
The effect I'm looking for is a panoramic shot of a sim-sized city that is on fire, viewed from above, so we were thinking that if we could hack the clouds to make them look more like smoke, we could just raise the ground to cloud height.
Particles are too limited and too LODed to do what we want... maybe we should instead build a smaller scale model for the wide shots. Feel free to prove me wrong though!
Has ANYONE tried covering a whole sim with particles? oO

Over Xmas, AJUK Baldwin covered the entire sim of Slollywood in falling snow particles.

A smaller scale model is a great idea.

There is no known cloud texture that I am aware of, you should ask for it in SL Answeres ( you never know). As for the sim in particles, that doesnt work too hot from my experience. I would go with a smaller model, plus it would be easier to make changes on the fly to the particles if it was a small model. Good Luck, I'll hunt around a bit more actively to see if there is a cloud texture as well... you never know, maybe someone from Alpha knows! :p

I'm suprised you didn't try this in beta.

Sorry...

The clouds ARE particles.

The clouds are just a big sim-wide particle engine.

You can really tell if you try doing particle effects around 200 meters, turning off clouds in Debug becomes reflex in certain areas where the ground is close to 200. :)

ya, we tried using heavy particles a while back in a combat sim. It sort of worked. The problem is the max particle size is smaller than the cloud particles. But it could work if the clouds aren't an option.

Sadly no, this wasn't in beta with eggy, but speaking of which, I think Eggy already did this in beta, and this is his attempt to kill the joke ;).

Hello,

I noticed this in the Wiki, under the Misc section:
http://secondlife.com/badgeo/wakka.php?wakka=ClientAssetKeys#misc

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for though.

Nah, the alpha sizzle has never worked in any previous versions for me, so i doubt that is the texture key for it. Although it would be nice if LL would include the cloud uuid on the client asset list :)

Are you people ever going to stop harassing me? Is it too much to ask of people that they behave with a certain level of maturity and respect for their peers in these forums?

I'm pretty sure the texture is autogenerated. I wonder if it's cached somewhere other than just video memory though.

Also, mature much, guys?

... the hack is possible though it's not the most eligant, it is simple and won't make the client unstable. More details i shall not give :p

He knows too much, and for that reason, HE MUST BE PUNISHED!

Eggys got the beta thing..

We'll just have to put "Stife'll know" into every, single, thread in the forums..

You can make it so particles are not culled by the LOD monster by making their source prims at least 10m on at least one axis. That way the prims aren't culled, and the particles are also not culled. I did this for the approach lights at Abbotts Aerodrome and they are always visible whenever the runway itself is.

Make your own sky....
01-26-2006 11:00
If the clouds above don't work for you. Why don't you make a plane above your land, and then create your own weather by projecting your cloud textures and movement algorithm to this plane.

Would that work?

Troy
