I appreciate that Daniel just came out and stated his fault in this. It's a respectable action on his part to accept responsibiliy instead of using excuses or not saying anything at all.
Good luck to you Daniel. Hope you aren't getting hate spam over this. _____________________

You know, once I did a rm -rf / and forgot that I had my windows partitions mounted in /mnt... OUCH!
I managed to hit reset fast enough and ended up not losing an awful lot ![]() _____________________

Deleting stuff is human, not having a backup is weak Systems.

I think doing a column update to a fixed value and forgetting the where clause is even worse. :-/ Also, although my attitude in relation to this particular issue doesn't show it, I have to agree with Gaudeon that Daniel has earned no insignificant measure of respect from me for taking responsibility. Whoever made the decision not to back up the forum databases, on the other hand... _____________________

Has it been confirmed there is no backup, or is this speculation?

strangeness: scripting forum won't even load
06-23-2004 11:53
Out of curiosity I tried loading every possible forum (/invalid_link.html N goes from 0 to at lleast 59), and the old scripting forum (N=5) is the only one that won't even load. Invalid numbers give an "invalid forum" page, but the scripting forum aborts the connection immediately.
Daniel, I hope that you can restore the scripting forum. The irony of a restructuring intented to make the forums friendlier leaving the real world, off-topic and rant forums accessible while removing one of the useful ones would be too painful. |

The real irony is in the new scripting forum being entitled "Wisdom of the Script Gurus", when the collective wisdom since the beginning of SL has been wiped clean.

We can reconstruct a lot of the lost knowledge, especially when a lot of it is still fresh in our minds. I'm anxious to rebuild, but there's no sense in starting until we know if the salvage effort has failed. _____________________

Once we are sure that the Scripting Forum is unrecoverable, we should hold an in-game funeral and erect a gravestone and memorial for it. Maybe the scripting Wikki could also host some scripting-focused forums on the same site.

How does a company with the income of Linden Labs NOT have a daily backup.
It should have been recoverd in at most, an hour after being accidentally deleted by an employee who obviously didn't know enough about the forum software to be making the changes he was making. |

Look at it like this: If LL hadn't made the stupid modifications to the forums, this "accident" would have never happened. Daniel, you posting about this to the forums did yield a minute amount of respect from me, however your inability to update the status of this situation promptly has stomped that into oblivion. _____________________

I also dunked him a few times at the dunk-a-linden in Plum yesterday, so you can quit the bitching, the forum has been avenged ;-) Also, the LSL Wiki has a script library section now. _____________________

If you can find a really slow bit of the Internet, you could possibly intercept the packets flying around from earlier page reads.
Or you could put 8 monkeys with typewriters and use the uncertainty principle to put them in multiple universes for a while then choose the universe where they recreated the scripting library by accident. Or put a spaceprobe really far into space, and listen to the radio waves from when people were reading and submitting to the forums before. Or find the backup tape. Hmmm, maybe that one's a bit farfetched ![]() Or immediately shut down the computer and use a file restore utility to read all teh posts directly from the harddrive (oh, I hope thats not why it's taking so long ![]() Azelda |

It might not be as easy to restore one forum as it is the whole BB.
