Mea culpa! I killed the General Scripting forum by mistake. We'll see if we can't resurrect it shortly.

Feel free to send me hate IM in-world...

Heh, good to know that it was only an accident :)

What's the General forum called now? I can't figure it out. (Market-speak has never been my forte)

"New To Second Life" or something like that.

Ditto that.

So much sample code and source code lost. *sob*

Especially recent stuff, since the library has become somewhat underused because of the long posting delays.

I say we tie Daniel up and throw him in the volcano!

I think part of the point of the redesign is that there no longer IS a General forum. There isn't a lot of point to having a catch-all forum, if you think about it.

With the exception of Daniel's screw-up, there really isn't a lot that doesn't make sense if you look at it from a purely "getting things done" perspective.

I might consider some kind of classified ads forum, and DEFINITELY moving the Land for the Landless to a web form somewhere else on the site. It shouldn't be on the forums at all. It's confusing to newbies and infuriating to the regulars as a result.

I dunno, I think there's a good reason that the general forum was the most active. People like to chat, to post about things in SL. It's a social web, and it all just sort of aggregates there.

I think there's a definate need for a general forum. I just think maybe the moderators have to be more aggressive in moving threads into the appropriate forums until people just get the hint. ("Ah, yes, I'm ranting. I should do that in the rant forum";)

Oh, and to continue Tcoz's example:
NaN is a value that a float in SL can take, but there's no way to represent it directly, and casting it to a string will result in a crash. There, it's a script post.

Funny enough, I was just saying there was a need for a rant forum.

edit: Ooops, I forgot to make it a script post. A floating point number in LSL is a 32-bit value, which offers approximately 7 decimal digits of precision.

Now that its been approximately 3 hours since Daniel posted this apology, Im beginning to lean toward the conclusion that the former script forums have been permenantly deleted.

Come on Jarod - you never made a mistake?

And when's the last time at your job someone said something like this to you?

I realize I'm not Jarod, but I'll answer anyway is if it were directed at me:

Never. Our database gets a nightly full backup. Not to mention the fact that it's in a failover cluster, AND is replicated every 3 minutes to a remote site for backup failover.

But then, where I work, the information in our databases is how we make our money. Our customers tend to get rather pissed and close their accounts when we lose or mangle their data (or the data that they rely on, even if it didn't come from them originally.)

And in case anyone's in the mood to bring up the argument: No, the company I work for doesn't have any real competitors in our market, any more than SL does.

LOL! hahahah man thats a hoot.

Theres something about random screwups (especially my own of course) that seriously just make me laugh a lot harder than they could ever make me cry..

I think I'll take Catherine's lead for the next month or so - whenever I accidentally hit delete one time to many and scrap half my build, I'll refer to it as 'pulling a Daniel'

And of course, I'll laugh my fool ass off :)

Chill Daniel, S*it Happens hahaha.

Siggy.

The script library (stagnant though it is) was never gone.

It's the old Scripts and Scripting forum that had the vast majority of the useful information/samples, that got deleted.

Sometimes it takes days to recover from a crash. Especially the first time you do a restore.

Come on Jarod - you never made a mistake? ... And when's the last time at your job someone said something like this to you?

About six months ago, a server died. No one yelled at me, no one called me a "bleeding fuck," but then the server didn't die because of some strange, pointless reconfiguring on my part.

If Daniel had said, "Our server crashed, we're grabbing backup data" or "I was trying to moderate a post and messed up," I wouldn't have yelled. However, saying, "I deleted a years worth of archives, and we may or may not have a back up, because of some silly forum swapping," it gets my dander up.

I don't complain about lag, land, Lindens (the money), or noisy sims. However, when something stupid makes me reevaluate my thinning trust in SL as a development medium, I will curse and swear until your ears bleed.

So what's the status on the old script forum?

Is it coming back, or lost forever? Should we start rebuilding or just wait patiently? There are some threads I would like to see resurected.
