What does a de-ruthing script need to do?

I didn't realize that you could de-ruth by script (and I suspect that you can't, actually). If I'm wrong, I'd love to know the answer too. Technically, of course, we haven't been "ruthed" since they updated the mechanism a few clients back. Ruth has been replaced by the pulsating cloud. When I find myself stuck in cloud mode, I can usually get out by doing a rebake or going into Appearance and out again.

I sort of thought so, but I have seen scripted objects lying around that claim to be deruthing devices, and I did come across the idea that all you needed to do was to send the afflicted avatar up to about 1000m - out of everyone's draw distance range - and bring it back again to force a re-fetch. Would that make any sense?.

There are loads of folk remedies. I heard someone claim the other day that she could uncloud herself by mouseclicking on herself really fast. I think it's like cures for hiccups or the common cold. Most of the methods seem to work because you are keeping yourself occupied while the servers catch up and realize that you are in-world and need to be rezzed. The only one that makes sense to me is going into Appearance, because that does at least make an explicit connection to the asset servers.

That's what the deruth function in Flight Feather does. You can also get the same effect by teleporting a couple of sims away and back again, but with teleporting the way it is these days Flight Feather's deruth is safer.

You're going to make one you sit on, then?

That the plan. Are there any special considerations I'd need to take into account?

(Edit) Whee! I don't know if it does anything for ruth, but it's a fun ride! (Simple things...)

No-rez zones is all I can think of.

The best (and only really reliable) de-ruth (de cloud) I know of, is to switch linden hair layers.

The cloud ruth is triggered by the client seeing the 50% grey "loading" texture UUID, on the linden hair layer. Day Oh actually has a hair with this texture applied to it. (useful if you WANT to become a cloud). The easiest way I know to fix the problem when your friends say "you're a cloud" is to just swap hair layers. As a female av, this is usually pretty easy, since I just have to switch from one "bald" layer to another.

There's no way to script that though.

Of course if your appearance won't load at all, then the system won't allow you to change hairs. I'm not sure that this warppos trick will help in that situation either.

The lack of test subjects is a drawback. This could be useful.

And since you can't do that for someone else, the only way to deruth people around you is to force their avatars to reload. And the only way to do that is to move outside of draw distance and back in again. This is completely reliable, *if* the missing assets are missing because of packet loss and not because the asset server is ass.

Oooooo! I think I'd like to become a cloud at will, that sounds like a fun trick when everyone's comparing silly avs for a laugh. Thanks for that :-)

If you really want to look like a cloud, Viktoria Dovgal posted a lovely script in the Texture Tips forum last winter that does the job. The UUID of the texture may have been updated since her post, but I'm not sure because I can't get in world right now to check. Take a look, anyway ..... /54/53/267677/1.html

Is this a specific UUID that you can post, or just any old 50% grey texture? :)

Here's the relevant info from Viktoria's post, which I referenced earlier....

// The glowy cloud texture is distributed with the viewer as cloud-particle.j2c.

I looked at that post, Rolig, but I couldn't see how applying a user uploaded cloud texture to the Linden hair layer was going to change my avatar into a cloud. :D

And now I've experimented I realise I don't even know how to apply any UUID to Linden hair in the first place. :(

I suspect there are clever tricks required here than I'm going to achieve.

Well, applying the texture to hair is no problem. If I were going to make myself look like a cloud, I would take Viktoria's script, drop it into an avatar-sized invisiprim, remove any prim attachments from my av, and wear the object -- probably attached to my chest instead of attaching it to my head as a hair substitute.

Hmmmmmm... not a bad Halloween costume. :D

And how do you apply a texture UUID to hair?

^^ This. (^_^)

The NCI Deruth rocket basically takes your avatar out of draw distance for a split second once you sit on it then unsits you. (^_^)

It fixes quite a few graphical and avatar asset glitches and is available free and full perms in the NCI freebie wall. (^_^)y

Ask around for Ruth Hair... Quite a few people have it pre-made. IM me if you can't find anyone with a copy. (^_^)y

Hm, well, the hair trick only appears to work from your own perspective. Everyone else see you in-the-flesh, it's only you that can see you as a cloud.

Oh well. :p

That depends on the client. I've triggered it in Kuula and people have noticed right away but many people turn off Ruthclouding in their debug settings. (^_^)y

Yea it seems like it stopped working in the 1.23 viewer :( Maybe you could achieve it again by wearing null key textures. I can't test because there's no way in hell I'd use a 1.23 viewer :P

Umm I'll try to contribute to the OP... OP, if it was avatar A who failed to receive the appearance of avatar B (scenario 1), avatar A can move away from B, putting them outside draw distance, and then move back again, and when avatar B enters avatar A's draw distance again, he or she should receive the appearance of avatar B. On the other hand if avatar A sees itself as a cloud (scenario 2), I'm not sure a script can do anything for it. It seems the situation can often be remedied by the client sending an AgentWearablesRequest, but in the official viewer this is ONLY triggered by the avatar object being created (entering draw distance). So if you could find a way to make your own avatar leave and then re-enter draw distance, the viewer would re-send that request. Note that in scenario 2, avatar B would be unable to do anything about his or her view of avatar A using the technique applied to scenario 1. Good luck!
