Continuing the off-topicness. :-)

*nix: great if you happen to be a programmer, and like compiling everything yourself, otherwise you're basicly screwed.

Depends on which type/distribution of *nix you get -- some of the popular versions of Linux have loads of stuff ready to go, and the programs far easier to find, download, and install than on Windows. For example, I've been running Fedora Core on a VPS for a year or two, and using Ubuntu on my home PC for a while, and I've never had to compile any major applications.

There's been one or two odds and ends that I've had to compile... but that was either stuff that you wouldn't be using in the first place unless you had some good experience already, or just random non-essential programs I wanted to try out... like the alpha release of a game (and I was more interested in the source code anyway!).

me, this is going to be like skipping Millenium and going from Windows 98 to XP.
In terms of the code, more like skipping 2000... but 2000 was definitely a step up from 9x/Me.

And given the feedback that indicates that Windows 7 is just going to be a "plus pack" for Vista the way XP was a "plus pack" for 2000, I would suggest not holding your breath waiting for an improvement over Vista.

My UNIX desktop is great. Nice consistent user interface, and it's got all the cool geek capabilities both from the UNIX side and from the Apple side... Applescript syntax sucks rocks but having universal scripting for applications that doesn't involve digging in to the internals of COM objects is great.

This isn't your father's Macintosh.

Waiting on beta release before worrying about any feedback. From what I have seen they will be stripping out the parts of Windows Vista that have kept corporations from deploying.
Very few companies have gone the Vista route and Microsoft is aware of this. I am definitely anxiously awaiting being able to use SOAP for net queries.

that's not what I've heard... if you did that you'd end up with XP. It's more that they're treating Vista as an accidental beta for Windows 7.

Prediction for the day: Apple had the grace and intelligence to become Unix-based. One day, Windows will do this too.

Then we are definitely reading different MSDN blogs and articles.

That was inthe late '90s or early 2000s, when they bought Softway Systems. Softway Systems made a complete UNIX subsystem for NT based on the Microsoft POSIX subsystem, open source UNIX code, and rather a lot of glue of their own. They have been really reluctant to turn this subsystem into a standard part of Windows, though.

If you have Windows 2000 or XP you can download "Windows Services for UNIX" that contains the Interix subsystem. For some versions of Vista or for Windows Server 2008 you can enable the "Subsystem for UNIX Applications" and get the same result. If you have any version of Vista less than Enterprise or Ultimate, though, you're out of luck.

It's not as good a UNIX as the one Apple's shipping, but it's workable, and provides a more uniform UNIX environment than MKS or Cygwin since it's not built on top of the Win32 subsystem the way they are.

WinSxS is one of the differences between Vista and Windows 7 and it is a huge difference.

don't get me wrong, *nix has all the same types of basic software, although the neophyte isn't going to be able to to find things as easily... I happen to like it, I run my personal server on it, driver support often surpasses anything else. you just can't expect to use the major name software, which is a drawback when most businesses run M$ based apps. help can also be a nightmare, more so the more you dive into it and tweak. but then hopefully by then you can cure most things yourself.

as for win7, I'll believe when I see... removal of those elements that have kept business adoption low is what will sell me... no more idiotic overpolling, no behind your back downgrades, and no more "your mouse cursor has moved, if you meant for this to happen press continue" type messages

Really interesting post, Argent. I knew none of that history. Gives me even more hope that the "one day" will finally come.

I used to believe that article represented reality, too. But all the references to this supposed new clean API and "legacy" box that I've found all go back to that article, and it's been pretty widely criticized as being wishful thinking.

...I truly believe that you haven't really experienced the debilitating terror of windows unless you actually understand the meaning and effects of HRESULT and all the associated Win cpp preprocessor macros.

Straight from the horse's mouth(no pun intended):

"Windows 7’s new approach solves many of the previous API compatibility issues that previous versions struggled with, offering new API frameworks and supporting legacy frameworks through monolithic Libraries. This allows legacy applications to run smoothly, without compromising new performance enhancements for applications created for the Windows 7 platform. Ultimately, users can quickly and seamlessly upgrade without having to worry if their favorite programs will still work. "

EDIT: This is from the latest 12/2/08 release of the Developer Guide

Believe me when I say I am no fan of MS. If it was not for different engineering programs, Autocad for example, I would gladly take Linux instead. But for this same reason Corporate America has already made it plainly clear to MS that there will be no EOL for XP until a viable replacement is pushed out. No handy references but I have seen a few articles with MS acknowledging this problem. I work at a small company with 12 users on computers with various versions of MS Office, Autocad versions from 2002 to 2008, an older version of Peachtree, Fabsuite(Windows Only) etc. We simply can not afford to upgrade all of the software on every computer when we change operating systems. Take and multiply this by several orders of magnitude when you start looking at deployment for large corporations. It is for this reason that most of my friends who also work in networking/IT will also be joining in the Beta testing. It is going to be a very sad day indeed if we are wrong.

That doesn't mean they're running the legacy applications in a "classic" environment.

It sounds like they're finally getting library versioning.

I'm working on a patch to the viewer code right now. Maybe we can persuade the Lindens to either use it or implement their own rather than be shown up by a resident. LOL.

You can't spell "Windows" without "Win" ^_^

Short story: Apple looks cool, Microsoft IS cool.

Lol. Time for me to get pummeled by Apple lovers :D

My (source code) patch is available. It is attached to http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8759 I hope someone ("someone" especially being the LL development team, but third-party viewers might start the ball rolling) can enjoy and make use of it.
