I took these yesterday while playing around with the capture feature of the snapshot dialog. I took a standard photo to disk, but set it to capture depth instead of colors, and came up with these. This is exactly how they were captured, just resized. Pretty cool feature!

Wow, those are really neat. Reminds me of a sort of digital version of an infra-red photo. :D

Might be worth taking 2, one for depth, one for colour and mixing them in photoshop...

The 'capture object outlines' option is also pretty funky, but I haven't saved any of those yet. It gives a wild looking abstract sort of image with everything in shades of blues and greens.

Here's a shot of my ruins that I tried to do that with... examples both ways for comparison. The first pic is the standard snapshot; the second has the depth capture pic layered on top and adjusted to 50% transparency, plus a couple of other tweaks added in GIMP. (Increased contrast, autolevels, added a bit of softglow.) Nice final result, I think. It'll be worth doing some more experimenting with.

That Silhouette mode could come in very handy for creating clipping masks in Photoshop. Would make it easy to cut your Avatar out of the background - plus it just looks cool. :)

You can also use the depth to simulate depth of field..

just tweak the depth mask and use the depth mask as an amount to blur by.

Heh, we think alike. Here's an experimental thing I put together of Nexus Prime. Note there's objects missing, because I had to turn off alpha surfaces since they're not rendered in the z (depth) buffer.

Good stuff.. I was going to post about how to do it, with pictures.
But yours is pretty nice :)

Here is how I've done it so far.. ***(Using Adobe Photoshop CS2!!)***
* Take a snapshot, check "keep open after saving" checked.
save twice, once for color and for depth.

* load into photoshop both pictures and put into 2 layers.(select all, edit-copy, create layer and paste)

* select depth layer and tweak the depth layer so things you want blurred are white and
things you want sharp are black. 3 different ways to do this.
- Close focus = Close sharp(black), things far away blurry(white).
- Focus set to infinity = Far away is sharp(black), close is blurry(white).
- Focus set in-between. This close blurry(white), things medium distance sharp(black) and thing far away blurry(white).

-Close focus = just tweak brightness/contrast of depth mask.
-Focus set to infinity = invert using invert on lens blue
-In between = hard. add/subtract and inverse(someone else can explain, lol)

* Now you need to go to menu Select->Color Range.
- use eye dropper on the white, and adjust fuzziness to how you want blur.
- the blur part should be selected with outline

* switch to the color layer

* Now go to menu Filter->Blur->Lens Blur. Adjust until you like it.
Done!

Heres a sample:
Default Depth : Default Color
Adjusted Depth : Result.

Wow, that's awesome. Anybody know a similar procedure for GIMP?

I can't speak for GIMP, but I wasn't able to find a way in Paint Shop Pro to use the depth mask to actually control the amount of blur; what I ended up having to do was use 3 image layers with different amounts of blur (one with no blur, one with some blur, and one with a lot of blur) and mask them appropriately with modified versions of the depth image.

Photoshop CS2 sounds pretty nice in that respect. I've been throwing around the idea of getting it for a while, but I just haven't been able to bring myself to blow so much money on something that probably has only a handful of features more than what I have now that I'll actually find useful. :o

I actually though thats how you did it, hehe.
I can see where the levels are, but I doubt most people can.
Manual is good enough, only issue is its alot more manual work.
I dono if photoshop CS(1) or less has the lens filter...

Btw, nice HDRI/overbright effect!
helps as much as DOF I think.

Using CrazyMonkey's method, I took a pic of Nakama. Came out pretty good, I think.

I just had to give this a shot.

This is a Single Image Random Dot Stereogram created with Sirds for Mac OS X.

The object was created by Satu Moreau and can be found in-world at Dusun (192, 132).
