Does anyone want a new animation editor?

I'm just wondering if anyone is still looking for an animation editor, for whatever reason (finding Poser too expensive is a fine reason).

The reason I ask is that I happen to have a working prototype of such a program sitting on my computer right now. It needs a bit of work before it'll be much good to anyone but me (for one thing, it runs on Linux, and the port to Windows is unfinished), but I've managed to create several new character poses with it.

It isn't all that fancy: You get a wireframe skeleton on the screen, you spin the controls to rotate each individual joint (forward rotation only, no IK). It loads and saves directly to BVH files. These particular BVH files, however, flawlessly work with SL.

As it stands, it does what I need it to do. Is there enough demand out there for such a program to be worth finishing it up and doing the Windows port? I'll probably do so anyway, but it's a low priority unless people want it.

A mac port is somewhat unlikely. Mostly because I don't have a mac newer than OS 8 to develop on. Donations of Mac Minis are always welcome, however. ;)

It runs in Windows now. I spent the past couple hours redesigning my build system, so now I can generate Linux or Windows executables at the same time, from the same tree.

The editor is still missing a couple things I'd like to see before I release it. Namely support for user-definable cameras and support for load/save dialogs (right now, you have to specify the file to open from the command-line, and 's' saves out numerically sequential files). Once that's done, it should be in good shape for a release.

Solar, this is awesome. I suspect you're going to become a very popular person with the animation crowd once you release this! I know I'll be playing with it. :D Good luck!

I've worked with importing BVH into Maya, but untill SL I never had reason to export is. Does anyone know if there is an exporter to bvh from maya? For obvious reasons I would preffer one that runs on linux, or the source. :)

Thanks

once you get the open and save dialogs done I'd like to get a copy for windows :). I have no problem with poser, but it's clunky.

Count me in. I'd love to see how it works.

As much as I'd love to have poser, and love DAZ to be able to export BVH... It's not happening.

would love to have a decent editor thats not as expensive or hard as poser is sometimes.

Do you currently have an online page so that you can allow others to dl from?

If not, id be willing to donate a page and some bandwith on my site as a dl point.

Yup, and if you GPL it and put it up on SourceForge I bet other would help with development.
