Call for Burning Life '08 Theme Camp Proposals

Hi gang! Here is the first round of opportunities to get a reserved space for Theme Camp building at Burning Life '08! "What's a Theme Camp!?", you may ask. It's a plot of land you can call home at Burning Life. It is where you "camp" and also where you invite other participants to join in some sort of experience, dialog, event or whatever you have dreamed up to amuse them.

This year, we are going to have two types of Theme Camp plots; the first type are 58 reserved plots along the fancy main road (called the Esplanade), and the second type will be the first-come-first-served plots that comprise the rest of the city.

Here's the idea-- to get a guaranteed, reserved plot, come up with a really hilarious or profound camp theme and propose it using this form: http://tinyurl.com/69vnxh . This form will be open for submissions until Sunday, August 31.

We have a small committee of veteran Burners and art types who will pick out the proposals with the most promise of making an indelible impression of mad brilliance on the most people. Or simply those that make us laugh the hardest. For inspiration, you can see what sort of Theme Camps people build at the real life Burning Man Festival! Check their web site here: http://www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/2007/07_camps_a.html

If you do not get one of these Esplanade spots, do not despair. We will shortly begin to release chunks of the city in a first-come-first-served, land rush style (plus some as a lottery), both for theme camp builds and for small art projects. We anticipate several land-rushes, geared toward different time zones. Keep your eyes on the wiki and on the forum for more news... soon....

There is a quick SUCCESS button
08-21-2008 16:28
There is a quick flash of a SUCCESS button in yellow when the submit button is pressed, then it goes back to the form page. Might be a good idea to have it go to a success page so no confusion. Looking forward to BL again this year. DRD

Yeah, the "success!" notice tends to zip by very quickly... but if it has a problem with what you entered, you will get an error.

Tried 4 or 5 times to submit form...
08-22-2008 18:47
Dusty.....

I filled in the information required for theme camp, and tried 4 or 5 times to submit the form found at the tiny URL you posted in the SL forums..... kept coming back a plain white page with only the words "You are not authorised to access this form in Zoho Creator. Go to Home" in the center of the screen....

I was logged onto my ZOHO account, for which I had already submitted my confirmation, but still no passage into the Burning Life submittal process....

Please advise.... Thank you in advance for your help ....

===============================================

OK.... AFTER extensive trials and failures.... I focused on using Internet Explorer instead of my usual Firefox browser..... While using Internet Explorer, I DID SEE the quick flash of the yellow success box.... but it is not visible or does not seem to work with the Firefox browser... Of course all this is assuming that my submission WAS a success... which I think it was, but in reality I don't really know until I actually get a response from the Burning Life team as acknowledgment of my success.

I think I did it

The ZOHO form thing is rubbish. I am not sure if I did it correctly as it told me I did not have permission to view the form after I had submitted it.

Hope it did, as me and my friends really want to do something for this festival.

Do we get a mail confirmation?

Linden Oversight on Land Applications & Lottery.
08-23-2008 14:02
Dusty, there was a lot of drama last year about this event, and I don't want to re-ignite that. However I have to ask a couple of questions about camps and how land is distributed.

Last year some camps were dished out early to friends of the organizers, which annoyed quite a few people (especially when it involved the largest and best positioned camps). Other artists, who actively protested last year about some of the fiasco, now consider themselves to be at a disadvantage in this year's lottery and land application process.

Is there any oversight on your part with regard to how the lottery works, or how the camps are chosen? Will it be Linden reviewed, or are people at the mercy of an organizational team who may have personal animosity towards potential participants?

Who programs a site as IE only anymore? Only windows users have the latest couple versions anyways.

Clowns or Santas
08-24-2008 08:22
The Theme Camp form contains an item labeled Clowns or Santas.... I don't know what this means and have not been able to find an answer anywhere.

Would someone please enlighten me?

Much Thanks,
Ian

Ian, I think this refers to roaming groups that are seen at the Burning Man Festival. I am not sure whether they expect your build to have it's own group or if they just want you to allow groups to stop by and entertain you. That question had me puzzled too... so I just said yes.

Clowns or Santas?

It's a joke question you might find yourself being asked by Greeters as you enter Burning Man.

They question is, basically, with which group are you affiliated?

There is a longstanding silly rivalry at Burning Man between the Santas and the Clowns.

As you may imagine, when Clowns and Santas go on Rampage, (separately!) but then run into one another somewhere on the playa, things can get out of hand.

In the case of Burning Man, if you happen to answer "Santas" when the question was asked by a "Clown" or visa versa, you can expect some extra sillyness before you actually enter the event.

When will we know?
08-24-2008 19:20
Given the problems associated with the ZOHO website and the unknown surety of whether our Theme Camp Applications even really made it through....

When will we know if our submission request for a theme camp area was actually received. I would hate to miss out thinking that my application went through when it really didn't.

So I wait with hardly any fingernails left as I listen for any word that would indicate to me as to whether I did actually succeed in my submittal....

Please advise... thank you in advance!... :D

I don't understand. It's a yes or no response. Is it meaningless?

What is the URL looking for? A group website? A link to builds?

Clowns or Santas

I assumed it was asking if I was a member of either the Clowns or Santas.

BTW Katt or Dusty - you might want to try and assure the people using this that their submissions are getting through if in fact they are. Seems that is an issue for quick a few.

Application Issues
08-25-2008 02:18
Many "You are not authorised to access this form in Zoho Creator. Go to Home" messages later, I still have no idea if my application was accepted. It all started with trying to use the Verification E-Mail. Zoho wouldn't accept my password nor was there an E-Mail ID to use in the "Forgot Password" step. This makes it very hard to participate in the community. I'm on a Macintosh using Safari. Burning Man > Burning Life > Burning Mad?

I've tried to apply for Burning Life, as a volunteer, not for a parcel. After application Zoho wants me to create an account. Doing this I get a:

From: someone
You are not authorised to access this form in Zoho Creator. Go to Home

An hour later, I got a confirmation eMail for my new Zoho account. Pasting this into browser, Zoho wants me to login. Then I get:

From: someone
Server error occurred. Please try after sometime

Well ... I fear Zoho is borked. Could you add me to the group by hand, if the registration failed? I did setup my lsDeejay system on a few parcels together with Taff N during SL5B. The SL5B version of my lsDeejay system is no lag/no gimmicks client server parcel media control, able to control and display music, pictures, animated pictures, web, video and youtube. I dont know how big your current Burning Life staff is yet. But people had been calling for Taff 7*24h before and during SL5B, and I'm sure its better to have more people able to deed (and perhaps also return) objects who know their own scripts to setup a parcel media system.

ciao,Kephra

( shameless plug )
PS: I hope llTextBox works before next SL festival. I could code an online application process running completely within SL, so one does not need to visit buggy Internet Explorer only third party systems.
PPS: You can vote https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8759 if you want to speed up llTextBox development ;)

Do you think maybe its time?
08-25-2008 12:18
Considering that 6 of the 12 Non-Linden posts here are complaints about the function of the form, do you think it might be time to fix it?

Hello all--

Here are the folks whose applications came thru just fine: Gavin, DeadheadDMT, DR Dahlgren, Merry Gyniod, and Uccello Poultry. Kephra and Kara, I don't see apps from you. Try again please. Zoho should work with IE and Firefox-- it does for me. BUT-- MAKE SURE YOU HAVE POPUPS ENABLED in your prefs. That fixes a lot of problems people have.

I normaly block Java Script, Flash, Popups and all that SPAM. Zoho forced me to enable Java Script not only for Zoho itself but for several sites they embed. I also enabled popups this time. There was no popup, but it looks, as if my application worked this time. Well else - I'll send you a notecard with my application data. SL might be much better than Zoho, even if we are in the middle of a rolling restart ;)

Kephra--

I just realized that you made your application to the Volunteer form, not the Theme Camps form-- so I checked that DB and you are in there! It's all good! Sorry for the "features" built into Zoho; it's not a perfect system, but it does make it much quicker for us to get these applications out to all of you. It's all part of life's little adventure. I think.

What is the estimated wait time before we hear back as to whether or not we were able to reserve a site?

Hi Dusty,

I applied for a reserved space for Theme Camp building and volunteer position.

I saw the success zip by .... my name was not mentioned in your list of applications that came thru.

Will you please let me know if my application went thru okay.

Thank you,
